Adorable Albino Penguin Alert.

January 12, 2012 at 12:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

Consider this your necessary daily dose of adorableness.

Voyagers with Lindblad Expeditions, onboard the ship National Geographic Explorer, were just chilling on Aitcho Island in Antarctica when they spotted a rare white penguin a few days ago. The cutie pie is a Leucistic chinstrap penguin (okay, so he's not totally albino), as the video explains, and he's just going about his penguin-y business.

Now is the middle of the prime summer season in Antarctica, when the cruise ships and expedition tours make landfall on the southernmost continent. Hopefully we can expect more sightings of similarly cute wild fauna before the season ends in a couple months.

A National Geographic Photographer Enters the World of Fashion Ads

March 18, 2010 at 5:20 PM | by | Comment (1)

What would happen if you took a celebrated National Geographic photographer and asked him to do the glossy ads and commercial for a French luxury fashion house? The answer, which you'll know if you've gone shopping for any very expensive leather bags lately, is a stunning gallery of ads that belong in an art gallery.

Hermes, famous for producing the highest quality goods for travel (if you're okay with dropping four figures or more on them), signed on Eric Valli, a NatGeo name who really fell in love with travel back when he traversed Afghanistan on horseback at age 18. Aside from the Fall/Winter magazine ads like the one above, he's now developed their short commercial for the new fragrance Voyage d'Hermès, a $90 perfume that evokes the romance of nomadic travel with a horse and a dove.

The Adventure Comes to an End as National Geographic Folds Outdoorsy Spinoff

December 5, 2009 at 3:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

National Geographic Adventure magazine has published its last issue, bowing to competitive pressures that have shuttered dozens of magazines in 2009. According to news reports, they tried to sell the title, but wouldn't part with the National Geographic part of the name, and nobody wanted to buy a magazine simply called Adventure.

The Galapagos Continue To Be National Geographic's Favorite Travel Prize

June 8, 2009 at 1:02 PM | by | Comments (0)

It seems that the people at National Geographic just love giving away Galapagos Island trips. Yep, the Galapagos are turning into a not-very-original (but still pretty damn good) prize from them these days, and this time all they want out of you is a scenic picture.

The Energizer Ultimate Photo Contest wants you to send in your absolute best photo which fits into one of six categories: Wildlife, Nature, People, Travel, Weather or Inspiration. The big prize is the Galapagos trip, plus your photo being published in National Geographic, but we can't ignore the ton of other finalist prizes, including framed prints, scanners, books, and long-life batteries.

If you haven't already taken the photo of your lifetime you'd better get out there, because entries close on June 30. In July, photo judge Jim Richardson will pick two finalists for each category, and come mid-July we'll all be able to vote for the one we like best. And then like all good contest winners, the best photographer will have to traipse off to the Galapagos Islands. Let the best budding photographer win.

What Is a Trip With Alex Trebek To the Galapagos Islands?

March 25, 2009 at 2:39 PM | by | Comments (2)

Answer: What you could win starting March 30th.

Did you know that the long-running American game show, Jeopardy!, is turning 25 this year? Amazing. Which means we've been honing our Jepoardy! quiz skills since we were five.

To celebrate this birthday, the show is putting together a rather cool contest offering 25 viewers a weeklong trip with dreamy host Alex Trebek to the Galápagos Islands.

In the first-ever travel expedition with Alex Trebek, sweepstakes winners and their guests will travel aboard the National Geographic Endeavour for a 10 day/9 night voyage, touring one of the most scientifically important and biologically interesting areas on Earth.

To enter the sweepstakes, viewers should watch Jeopardy! weekdays from March 30th to May 1st and then visit www.jeopardy.com to submit the correct Final Jeopardy! category from that day’s episode. 25 chances to win in 25 days!

The trip is actually a partnership with partnership with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. For more info and to enter, visit Jeopardy's website. One person who will probably not be entering this contest? Sean Connery.

Students Learn in the Real Wide World

April 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM | by | Comment (1)

How come high school kids have all the fun--and why didn't this stuff exist back when we were still in school? We're talking about National Geographic's Student Expeditions, which send American teenagers from the ninth to twelfth grades out into the wild for three weeks at a time.

Of course, the hope is that they'll learn something, but it sounds more like a wild vacation to us.

Student expeditions head all over the place--the Galapagos Islands, China, Mali or our personal favorite, Iceland. And although the kids have to turn in a few assignments at the end and do 10 to 20 hours of community service along the way, we're still jealous as hell. Sure beats math tests and history quizzes back in the classroom.
