Why So Glum, Celebrity Chums?
We're in the doldrums of February right now and some days it's hard enough to leave the house, let alone travel somewhere. We know. We're feeling it. But things aren't going to be like this forever!
Look around you. Do you have an adorable dog? Did you just get back from a tropical vacation? Are you chowing down on some fast food or meeting your lover at the airport? Well, you've got that going for you. You could smile even while you know everyone in the world is watching you... but then we'll think you're crazy.

Natalie Goes To Film School
Today, "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," starring Natalie Portman, is filming at the Dalton School in New York City. Dalton, an elite private school, is located a block away from the Guggenheim Museum, no stranger to filming itself. Just this year two big-budget flicks, "The International" and "When in Rome," were shot there.
On January 6, the Gugg will present a 24-hour program on the concept of time, "theanyspacewhatever." The show, the museum says, will:
Concentrate on the concept of time in its myriad philosophical, psychological, biological, sociological, poetic, aesthetic and economic manifestations. Constituting a multi-disciplinary approach to the subject, the program will bring together artists, architects, scientists, philosophers, historians, engineers, filmmakers, musicians and other cultural producers.
Sounds a little too deep for us, so we might just stick with having drinks up the street.

A Mob Scene In Los Angeles
"Watchmen," one of the most anticipated movies of 2009 based on a graphic novel of the same name, is filming at the intersection of Broadway and West 8th Street in Los Angeles today. The scene is elaborate: More than 250 angry extras are going to rush out of a building and into the street before someone will be chased by police dogs and arrested.
Sounds like a lot of drama, especially considering it's all happening just two blocks from Grand Hope Park, known as the most tranquil spot in downtown LA. More than just a park, Grand Hope is also an outdoor art space with a modern clock tower, fountains and even coyote sculptures marking the paths that meander through its 2.5 acres. The park is cherished by locals as an oasis of green grass in an otherwise dismal sea of parking lots.
In NYC, "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," starring Natalie Portman, is filming near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When most people think of The Met, they think of fine art, but when we hear it mentioned, we get into happy hour mood. The Balcony Bar on the museum's second floor serves drinks and appetizers accompanied by live classical music until 8:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. They aren't the cheapest drinks in town, but the view is totally worth it.

Paradise Lost
Helen Mirren is currently filming a new adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" on the big island of Hawaii. For the past week or so they have been shooting at McKenzie State Park, 25 miles southeast of Hilo. The 13-acre park offers picnicking, fishing and beautiful views of the volcanic coastline.
Sounds perfect, right? Not so fast. While the cast and crew were working on Friday, a body with gunshot wounds was found on the shore of the park. The police didn't question anyone involved with the movie since they were working quite far from where the corpse was found, but they do believe the man was shot earlier that day.
Elsewhere, if we've learned anything since our On Location series started, it's that movies and TV shows film around airports way more than we would've imagined. Two weeks ago, Natalie Portman was filming "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits" at JFK; Friday, "Middle Man" starring Luke Wilson was filming near LAX; and today, "Fringe" is filming at LaGuardia. So if you're catching a flight, you may want to be on the look out for any paranormal activity.

Natalie Portman Takes Flight In NYC
Today, we're back to work--and so are our favorite celebrities. In the first installment of our new series, Jaunted On Location, we have two location shoots happening today on opposite coasts.
First, on the left coast, "Monk" is filming outside of Serious, Inc Clothing at 1317 Willow St. It sounds like today's scene may find our favorite OCD detective getting into a bit of trouble: We hear today's shoot involves dry ice, simulated bullet hits and live animals.
In New York, "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits" is filming at JFK. The movie, due out next year, stars Natalie Portman as a young lawyer who struggles to forge a relationship with her five-year-old stepson. LOIP has been filming in and around New York City since late October. Other recent locations have included the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History.

Tourist Behavior Travel: Natalie Portman Goes to the Museum
Once she starred in "Paris Je T'aime"; this week Natalie Portman proves that she does indeed love Paris with a visit to the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais. The "Other Boleyn Girl" star checked out the exhibit "Picasso and the Masters," which pairs works by Pablo Picasso with the classical works that inspired him in the home of the 1900 World's Fair.
This week's New York Times travel section declared that Europe is "more affordable for Americans than it has been for quite a while." Of course, that's relatively affordable, but well-trod tourist sites like the art museums might still be less crowded than they normally are.
Time to get that great digital-camera shot of the Mona Lisa! (Note: Don't.)

Airport Photo Shoot: Natalie Portman's One Bag Alert
Now here's a girl whose packing skills we envy: Natalie Portman has one hand free for her pooch as she slings her checked bag casually over one shoulder. Such grace! Such skill!
We're guessing Portman, who recently broke up with singer boyfriend Devendra Banhart, is headed home to New York City for Rosh Hashanah, which begins Monday at sunset. Hope you've bought your apples and honey!

Celeb-Spotting Up a Grade at This Year's US Open
Is it just us, or has the US Open gotten a hell of a lot trendier in recent years?
In the past, courtside interviews were limited to country club celebs like Regis Philbin and Donald Trump. But this year, the stands have been full every day with A-listers like Natalie Portman, Will Ferrell and Common. Queens has never had it so good.
For further celeb-spotting, the US Open website has a day-by-day gallery of famous faces who have attended matches this year. As for tennis, the tournament wraps up this afternoon, with the Tropical Storm Hannah-delayed men's final between Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Unfashionable Travel: Portman's Man Sports Short Shorts
Natalie Portman and her folksy boyfriend Devendra Banhart went to see the sights in Jaffa, Israel recently, but what's with his ultra-short shorts? They may be cool on the beach or in most American cities, but that is a whole lotta leg for sightseeing abroad.
While Portman sports some demure and clean Bermudas, her sleeve-free arms may also pose a problem if she wants to enter holy buildings, which occasionally ask women to cover up. (In a mosque she would also probably be asked to cover her head out of respect.)
Time to add a pashmina or shawl to our one bag packing list. If Natalie doesn't want to wear it, maybe he could... as a skirt.

Shopping Travel: Stock Up For Your Next Trip Through Time
LA's hottest new location isn't a hot club or a pool shaped like Barack Obama's head. It's the Echo Park Time Travel Mart, whose motto reads, "Wherever You Are, We're Already There."
Natalie Portman, Michael Cera and Catherine Keener have all showed up to pick up some of those necessary commodities like robot milk and barbarian repellent.
The store, which hawks time-traveling supplies, is (shh!) a front for author Dave Eggers' nonprofit writing center 826LA. Eggers' tradition of pairing outlandish stores with his tutoring locations began with 826 Valencia, which because of its zoning had to contain a commercial venture. He's so far opened a pirate supply store, and now has a superhero shop, a space-travel emporium and a monster boutique.

Paris: Natalie Portman's Hotel Adventure

Don't be fooled by that demure look: Natalie Portman has a steamy love scene in her latest project, a short film set in the famous Hotel des Chevaliers in Paris.
The 15-minute short entitled, appropriately, "Hotel Chevalier" co-stars Jason Schwartzman and takes place in one room of the hotel in Paris' bourgeois Marais neighborhood, between the 3rd and 4th arrondisements. The hotel has only 24 rooms, but each is equipped with air conditioning, and an overnight stay includes breakfast in its 17th-century basement.
The film is intended as a prequel to director Wes Anderson's new movie, "The Darjeeling Limited," which will have its American premiere at this weekend's New York Film Festival. ("Darjeeling" stars Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson along with Schwartzman as estranged brothers on a train trip across India to scatter their father's ashes.) Download "Hotel Chevalier" for free on iTunes now--according to our informant, it includes Portman's first nude scene in a movie.
