Better With Two (Or More)

January 15, 2009 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

You don't have to go it alone! Celebrities took their families, old and new, on the road this week. Pop star Taylor Swift arrived back in Los Angeles after her record-breaking turn on "Saturday Night Live"--she's the youngest musical guest ever to appear on the show--with her mom, who celebrated her birthday while they were in New York City. Two days after the Golden Globes, celeb mom Salma Hayek arrived early at LAX to take her daughter Valentina to Paris, where her father lives.

Sure, even with the nanny it can be a lot to handle: Liev Schreiber let the nanny carry son Alexander as he and Naomi Watts struggled with the bags from taking Alex and baby Samuel with them on a trip to LA. And Victoria Beckham, who we saw being a tourist over the weekend, took her three kids to Leonardo Da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport to fly back to Britain.

But the best companion can be someone who's just joining your family: Brody Jenner and girlfriend Jayde Nicole walked arm in arm at LAX, while Fergie and Josh Duhamel were taking off for their honeymoon, reportedly for the Bahamas. Have fun, newlyweds!

Movie Set Travel: Funny Games U.S.

March 14, 2008 at 9:01 AM | by sedona | 0 Comments

This week's pick is more like a vacation we never want to take, but will happily watch on the big screen in horror. Funny Games U.S. is the story of a family that rents a seemingly normal summer cabin and finds themselves the center of attention of two highly intelligent, white-glove serial killers.

Mom is Naomi Watts and the small lake where this was shot is actually Shelter Island, waaaay out in between the North and South Forks of Long Island. It's an ideal spring/summer escape, just be sure to check who your neighbors are first!

Another interesting fact? This is a shot-by-shot remake of the same film, released in Europe just over ten years ago. They even built the set to the exact same proportions as the first version.

Here's some cool (safe!) stuff to check out on the real S.I.:

Where To Stay: The Olde Country Inn Check into this mellow spot, originally built circa 1886, where you can shack up in one of their color-themed country rooms. It's a quick walk to the Heights area and the beach and breakfast's included.

Where To Eat: Planet Bliss Owned and run by Julie & Sebastien Bliss, PB offers American cooking that's a step up and supposedly amazing crab cakes made of entirely claw meat. If you're a breakfast fan, head there for a sun-filled room and butter pecan belgian waffles.

What to Do: SI Kayak ToursThe best way to explore Shelter Island is on the water. Much of the area is a beautiful untouched preserve, protected by the Nature Conservancy. At SI Kayak Tours you can rent a single kayak for $45 for a half day and take your own self-guided tour into serene inlets and coves.
