One Coachella Down and One To Go

April 16, 2012 at 9:04 AM | by | Comments (0)

Coachella is dead! Long live Coachella!

As the first year that the desert music festival is doubled to cover to weekends, 2012 seems to be thinning the buzz. THANK GOD. Hey, we love Coachella and everything, but now that festival-goers can chose from weekends, all the social media madness from Indio, California is now spread out. Alas, there were a few things that went down these last three days to put Coachella into the national conscious (and get people psyched for 2013--jeez).

To start, H&M staged a "Kiss for a Cause" tent, which served three purposes: one, for every tweet or instagram you did using their hashtag, H&M would donate $1 to AIDS research; two, H&M used some of the photobooth puckers on their own streams, making a few good-looking folks mini-famous for the day; and three, everybody got to see what everybody else was wearing in the hot weather (answer: fringed leather vests & faux-navajo prints).

The Countdown to Coachella Starts with a Cool Time Lapse

March 13, 2012 at 9:14 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's March 13 and, therefore, officially one month out from the start of the Coachella music festival in Indio, outside of Palm Springs, California.

At this point, if you haven't booked airfare/hotel/rideshare/campsite/etc, it's not going to be easy or cheap to figure out your weekend...or weekends. You see, this will be the first year that Coachella splits into two consecutive weekends, offering the same experience at both but allowing for double the attendance in total.

While regular festival passes are long SOLD OUT, it does look as though there's one work-around to score tickets to the first weekend of fun. Buy the Lake Eldorado camping package, and it comes with General Admission to Coachella. But then ya gotta camp, and the only option left is a 4-person tent (and 4 festival passes) for $2,975.

Get the Blues at the Mississippi Delta's Robert Johnson Festival

Where: County Road 518 [map], Greenwood, MS, United States, 38930-7324
October 5, 2011 at 2:48 PM | by | Comments (0)

You, Robert Johnson’s ghost, and some live blues artists. Just what the doctor ordered.

Last time we were down in the Mississippi Delta we were getting stuck in on local radio, but now here’s a reason to go back down there (and it’s not even related to The Help).

This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of father of the blues Robert Johnson; and to mark it, next weekend, the people of Greenwood are throwing a blues festival. Not only that, but it’s a festival right in the cottonfields next to where Johnson is purportedly buried.

The King of the Delta Blues 100th Anniversary Remembrance Festival takes place October 15-16 on Money Road, outside Greenwood and by the premises of the fabulous WABG radio station. The lineup includes Rory Block, Dr Feelgood Potts, Maria Muldaur and Bobby Rush, and there will be tributes to blues artists who died this year, like Honey Boy Edwards, Pinetop Perkins and Mississippi Slim.

Get Cooking with Peppy Jamie Oliver at London's Big Feastival

June 16, 2011 at 10:42 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Big Chill, Lovebox, Bestival, Field Day: there's no shortage of festivals in the U.K. this summer, most of which are music-centric and attract hordes of dirty campers eager to slosh around in their Wellies à la Kate Moss. Creeping up in number and quality are food festivals, whose focus is on celebrating the best of regional cuisine and proving that there's much more to British cooking than the country's middling reputation suggests.

Go to Lollapalooza for the Music, Stay for the Food (Like Lobster Corn Dogs)

June 14, 2011 at 12:36 PM | by | Comments (0)

While Lollapalooza has become a destination for music fans—who this year will trek out to Chicago this August 5 to 7 to see Eminem, Coldplay, Muse and the Foo Fighters for the 20th annual festival—it's also become an unlikely attraction for foodies.

Dubbed Chow Town, the food-fest-within-the-music-fest is returning for a second helping. Once again, MasterChef's Graham Elliot will curate the food offerings for Lolla and will bring more than 30 vendors to the three-day concert.

Coachella Will Split in 2012 for Two Consecutive Weekend Festivals

June 2, 2011 at 2:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

We're of two minds about Coachella, which is terribly convenient since there will be two Coachella festivals in 2012. Great—we can spend the first one enjoying the music and the scene, and follow it by spending the second one hating on it and making snide remarks about the Urban Outfitters-wearing masses passed out next to half-spun Dreamcatchers. Two Coachella fests means more options for festivalgoers, with more money for musicians and the event's company, but will it be a good idea in practice?

Coachella has come to be known as the Woodstock of the Apple generation, even though more and more corporations have carved out a little piece for themselves in recent years (example: H&M has a huge tent with entire collection previews). A single festival means one focus, one big blowout, one long weekend of overpriced hotel rooms or house rental and hopefully only one vacation day requested off at work to attend.
