Austin City Limits Brings Jaunted Into Contact With Andy Roddick
Enjoying a little Texas time, Andy Roddick and girlfriend Brooklyn Decker make their way through the crowd during John Legend’s performance at the Austin City Limits music festival this last weekend, along with ourselves. Let’s hope that when they passed by us, that were moseying up to the front row and not just elbowing their way around.
During the festival, Austin was apparently crawling with such celebs, including Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan (before she jetted to Paris for her debut as a designer for the Ungaro fashion house) and Matthew McConaughey, who usually always attends. It’s no surprise with a phenomenal festival lineup including Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, The Toadies, Citizen Cope, Dave Matthews and Ghostland Observatory, that we would bump into at least one bold-faced name.

Start The VW Camper Van And Get Going To Phish-Fest
Phish has been rocking out all summer long after announcing that they were back from retirement. Now they are looking to celebrate the season with Phish Festival 8, another installment of their sporadic get-togethers. The band, along with those who follow them around, are headed out to Indio, California from October 30 to November 1.
Think of this year’s festival as a sort of musical way to celebrate Halloween. The band is planning to cover a classic album in its entirety, but so far, their choice of album remains a secret. We’ll trust that they’ll pick something that their fans will enjoy—sorry Annie Lennox, this probably isn’t your year to be honored. Besides the cover concert, they will also be featuring an all-acoustic set on Sunday at noon. This concert brunch will also feature coffee and donuts for those with the munchies.

Austin Boasts Another Big Festival Besides SXSW: Austin City Limits
In case you missed the memo, somehow the summer season is officially over. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t continue to listen to live music well into the fall. Austin City Limits Music Festival is just around the corner, and it’s time to make plans to take in this year’s events in person from Zilker Park. This year you can even bring in your little rock stars; children 10 and under get in free with their mom or dad, and they’ll love the special programs at Austin Kiddie Limits—cute.
Things run from October 2 through 4, and there’s plenty of bands to keep your interest. The big ones this year are Kings of Leon, Dave Matthews Band, and Pearl Jam. If these acts are a little too mainstream, don’t worry, as there are plenty of up and coming stars that plan to hit the stage each day. At this time, the votes are still being tallied for The Sound And The Journey contest, where a lucky band will get to take the stage to wow fans, and hopefully, record producers.

Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay...In Portland, Oregon
A scene from last year's MFNW
As a destination, Portland is best known for being calm, idyllic, and very, very, very green. Though it's not a swarming metropole, it has, for years, also enjoyed a reputation for being a major culture hub in the Northwest.
What the city lacks in grit and grime it makes up for with a music scene to rival that of Seattle and San Francisco. Just ask the likes of The Dandy Warhols, The Decemberists, and The Shins, all of whom have ties to Portland. In other words, it's a lot more rock 'n' roll than the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden lets on.

SF's Outside Lands Festival Proves The '90s Are Alive And Well

Travel we know, but time travel? The lineup of this weekend's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival looks like it could have been lifted from the grunge rock and jam band days of yesteryear. If you're nostalgic for the early '90s, buffalo plaid prints and all, then the festival is your musical dream come true—and you don't even have to rev up your DeLorean.
From August 28-30, Outside Lands returns to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park for the second year running, following 2008's Radiohead-headlined extravaganza. This year is ruled by some of Generation X's sonic heroes—namely Pearl Jam (Friday) and Dave Matthews Band (Saturday)—but there are also plenty of other of-the-moment artists on the bill that we're excited about: The National, TV on the Radio, The Duke Spirit, and Jack White's newest super-band, The Dead Weather.

Bebop Over To Chicago's Jazz Fest on September 4

People grudgingly celebrate the end of summer when Labor Day comes around, but the Windy City says goodbye to the season with its annual Chicago Jazz Fest. The free 30-year-old fest, the city's longest-running lakefront music festival, swings into Grant Park Sept. 4 to 6, setting up three stages where you can see Chicago and international jazz players jam on their axes. And for the first time this year, one performance stage will be dedicated to the up-and-coming generations of jazz-heads in high school and college.
The three-day event has a considerable line-up of musicians. Among the headliners is bandleader Muhal Richard Abrams, who will lead a trio Sept. 4 at the Petrillo Music Shell and the Arthur Hoyle Orchestra on Sept. 6. Abrams, a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, was commissioned to create a composition for the fest.
His work, titled "Spiralview," will be dedicated to hometown boy President Barack Obama and feature three soloist sections. The first section showcases George Lewis playing trombone, the next section pairs Ari Brown on sax and Harrison Bankhead on bass in a duet, and the last has Roscoe Mitchell on the saxophone.

The Top Three Reasons To Visit Iceland This Fall
The little country with the big tourism marketing imagination has given us tips on getting a date with an Icelander and ugly sweaters, but now Iceland is even coming up with some seriously good reasons for us to visit in the next couple of months. Aside from the bank failure, of course.
· Reykjavik International Film Festival
It runs from September 17 to 27 this year, it's full of excellent films and even the chance to catch the glow of the Northern Lights.

Summer in Frisco: Our Top Event Picks For August in SF

Last week we brought you a short list of creative ways to explore the Bay Area, and today, we continue our exploration of San Francisco and offer a couple surrounding travel options.
As San Francisco's famed Indian Summer approaches, temperatures are on the rise, making the coming months an optimal time for visiting. Remember, these suggestions are merely a jumping (or jaunting) off point, so feel free to chime in with your favorite Bay Area sights, sounds, and the like.
· The Outside Lands Music Festival
With a lineup of popular artists including Pearl Jam, T.V. on the Radio and M.I.A., Outside Lands returns to Golden Gate Park from August 28-30, and, again, is expected to draw thousands of avid concertgoers to dance, drink (responsibly), and be merry outdoors. We're happy to see shuttle options on the festival's website, including a three-day pass for those attending shows over the entire weekend. As attendees last year, let's just say the taxi/public transportation scene wasn't pretty post-show. If you can swing the extra cost, VIP access is always the way to go, and will entitle you to Polo Club access (think shade and massage service), exclusive viewing areas, a VIP food selection, and much more.

Get In On Canada's Blockbuster Summer Music Festivals

Virgin Mobile's V-Fest, their second annual Canadian summer concert series, has already gotten its fair share of excitement this season. After passing through Montreal and Nova Scotia, the festival touched down in BC a few weeks ago for a weekend of music, celebrations, and insanely massive thunderstorms. The first night actually had to be called off early to ensure that nobody died, although concert organizers rescheduled The Roots for another time.
But it's the next two shows, first in Alberta and then in Ontario, that are getting all the attention.
Alberta's concert happens this weekend when, on Saturday, Pearl Jam headlines, marking their first appearance in concert this season. Sunday night's headliner is Billy Talent and in between there will be festival "experiences" like Thai massages, burlesque pole-dancing lessons, and an autograph tent.

Celebrate Woodstock's 40th Anniversary with Coast-to-Coast Events

Today, festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo are the pinnacle of live music experiences. Concertgoers happily sweat it out for the chance to see their favorite acts take the stage, their greatest worry finding mobile reception in a field jam-packed with iPhones and Blackberries. Forty years ago at a certain seminal festival, the mood was different: It was the Summer of Love, and instead of The Killers and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the audience had Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and an incomparable bohemian spirit.
We're of course talking about the original Woodstock, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Those "3 Days of Peace & Music" should never be forgotten, and there are plenty of commemorative events taking place to recapture the mood from the Summer of '69. Break out your headbands, angel sleeve dresses and caftans and pay homage to the event that came to define a generation.

All Points West Returns with Rock-Heavy Lineup, Chance to Volunteer for Free Tickets

One of the highlights of the summer music season, the All Points West Music & Arts Festival, will return to Liberty State Park in Jersey City (just across the river from Manhattan) on July 31, August 1 and August 2.
Following last year’s very successful Radiohead-led inaugural event, this year’s festival features Coldplay, MGMT, Vampire Weekend and Tool. Sadly, opening night headliners the Beastie Boys just pulled out of the show after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland.
As is the trend with these events, tickets for the three-day fest are a hefty $219, or $89 a day. APW does have a recession-era deal for you however, and it’s actually not a bad deal if you don’t mind hauling around some trash bags. Volunteer to work 15 hours over the course of the festival, and they’ll hook you up with a free three-day pass. If you think about the $219 cost of the ticket, that’s like getting paid $14.60 an hour, except you get paid in free music—a pretty good rate these days!
