Holy Smokes, It's The Real "A Christmas Story" House
November 25, 2008 at 11:45 AM | 1 Comment
One of the most beloved (or at least one of the most rerun) Christmas movies of all time is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, and you can be a part of it. “A Christmas Story”, the tale of poor Ralphie, who wants a BB gun for Christmas but can't have it lest he "shoot his eye out," is set in Indiana but was actually filmed in Cleveland. The house in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood that served as the movie’s primary filming location was restored and opened to the public for tours in 2006.
Though the house is open year round, this weekend is the big 25th Anniversary Celebration and Convention. Special events include appearances by actors from the movie, the premieres of two documentaries about the film, rides in the original fire truck used in the movie and the unveiling of newly-acquired costumes for the A Christmas Story House Museum.
The Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is the official hotel for the convention, and several of the weekend’s events, including a meet-and-greet with the actors, will be hosted by the hotel. They will also be providing transportation to the A Christmas Story House for all hotel guests.

Baz Luhrmann's long-awaited mega-epic, Australia, hits screens just before Thanksgiving on Wednesday, so be ready. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman engage in an ongoing saga of adventure, romance and history--and finally have roles they don't have to learn new accents for.
Kidman plays Lady Sarah Ashley, an English aristocrat who inherits a cattle station in Australia only to have it threatened by English cattle barons. With the help of "The Drover," played by Hugh, Lady Ashley has to herd 1,500 head of cattle in order to fulfill a contract with the Australian Army to keep her land. Combine that with stunning landscapes, conflicts, insight into the plight of Aboriginals and the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese and comparisons to Gone With the Wind and The African Queen are already being thrown around.
Although we hear both Kidman and Jackman stand out in this one, we also hear they're upstaged by the amazing landscape of Australia itself. Read on for some inspiring things to check out in The Kimberley, the northwest region of Western Australia...
George Clooney's Mustache

Call your lawyer, John Krasinski! George Clooney sported a shaggy moptop as he played a pickup game in Roswell, New Mexico yesterday.
Clooney followed the production of his new movie "Men Who Stare At Goats" from Mexico to New Mexico, where the desert will double as Iraq. Locals can look forward to Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor coming through town for their roles in the movie, which is about the US Army's attempts to develop psychological warfare techniques.
Clooney directed and co-stared with Krasinski in the period football comedy "Leatherheads." Female fans might disapprove, but don't worry! It's just a wig.

Quantum Of Solace
November 14, 2008 at 8:05 AM | 0 Comments
Our favorite sexy British spy returns to the big screen today, and we can't wait to see him again. "Quantum of Solace" brings back Daniel Craig as 007 and Judi Dench as "M," picking up where "Casino Royale" left off, right after James lost Vesper. Having captured Mr. White, Bond and "M" discover (of course) that the enemy organization they're dealing with is far more dangerous and complex than they'd originally thought.
Evidence links a traitor in MI6 to a mysterious bank account in Haiti where Bond meets the stunning Camille. She has her own agenda but leads him to villain Dominic Greene, a "ruthless businessman" who is about to make a deal to take control of the water supply in Bolivia. All in a day's work for Bond...
This adventure actually takes place all over, from Austria to Italy to Panama, but we invite you to read on for some great things to check out in one of its key filming locations: Chile.

There's a kid in everyone that loves animated movies. Come on, when the tiger starts crying big tiger tears, it's hard to not feel bad for him even if he's just some lines on paper, or in the case of DreamWorks, several thousands of dollars worth of highly engineered lines crafted by a computer. Take your favorite kid to see Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa today.
In this sequel to the popular first film of the same name, all the New York Zoo animals find themselves marooned on the island of Madagascar. The penguins (leave it to the suits!) put together a an old crashed plane that gets the gang there--but also gets them stuck. On Madagascar they encounter their ancestors and species relatives for the first time. Voices include Jada Pinkett Smith, Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen and Chris Rock among others.
As this one wasn't really filmed, well, anywhere, we invite you to read on to check out some cool spots in the real Madagascar...

October 31, 2008 at 8:15 AM | 0 Comments
If trick or treating and sexy French maid outfits aren't your thing, head to the movies for your requisite Halloween frightfest and see "The Haunting of Molly Hartley." Haley Bennett plays Molly Hartley, a 17-year-old girl who's the new kid in school--only she's had to switch schools to get away from her mentally disturbed mother who stabbed her.
Molly tries to recover psychologically, but the nightmares still haunt her. That's when she realizes that they're not completely dreams: There are a whole bunch of people (mom included) who want her killed in order to save her from a preordained life as a servant of the Devil. Yikes.
We hear it's a teen-focused flick, so expect quippy dialogue and the standard high school bullies--and a nice dose of Chace Crawford! This one was shot in LA, instead read on for some travel options perfect for your own haunting...

The High School Musical franchise strikes again today with its third installment: Senior Year. The Wildcats are facing college, and Troy and Gabriella realize they're going to be separated. The next logical step? Stage a cheeseball musical of course! Just exactly how our senior year ended....
Grab the nearest teen you owe a favor to and drop them off at the theater. We're not sure we could stomach all the singing and dancing, but we hear it's quite catchy and lives up to its musical name!
Where is the Wildcats fictional high school? In Salt Lake City, Utah, at East High School and Murray High where much of the film was shot. Read on for some cool things to check out in SLC...

Movie Set Travel: The Secret Life of Bees
October 17, 2008 at 8:40 AM | 0 Comments
Based on the hit novel, "The Secret Life of Bees" comes out on the big screen today. It's a bring-your-mother/sister/best friend kind of movie that tells the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens who escapes her abusive father with her caregiver and best friend. The two are taken in by the fiercely independent Boatwright sisters who teach them about beekeeping, honey and what real families are. We can already feel the tears coming on, so be ready.
Dakota Fanning is the star of the show, but it also features Queen Latifah as August Boatwright and Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Paul Bettany, too. There are tons of poignant moments, but it's not exactly action packed.
Lily and Rosaleen escape to a town in South Carolina, but in actuality the film was shot in North Carolina. Read on for some fun things to check out there this fall...

Australia Movie Screenwriter Inspired by Actual Australia
October 12, 2008 at 2:30 PM | 0 Comments

We're just over a month away from the release of Baz Luhrmann's latest epic film, Australia, which the country is hoping will boost its profile as a travel destination (witness this cool Aussie tourism ad). Based on the trailers, the story looks pretty interesting - Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman portray lovers caught in the turmoil of the 1930's - but the real star of the film is the land itself. In a recent interview with National Geographic Adventure magazine (not online), screenwriter Richard Flanagan talked about his childhood in Tasmania and the northern outback region that inspired him to pen the script.

Movie Set Travel: RocknRolla
October 10, 2008 at 8:30 AM | 0 Comments
Mr. Madonna (that's Guy Ritchie to you) is back on the big screen this week with a London-set flick, RocknRolla. It's his typical cast of quirky characters involved in yet another scheme. This time, a Russian mobster sets up a real estate scam that results in millions of extra pounds, bringing all of the the city's criminals to the surface to snatch their share.
RocknRolla's lacking the star power of Brad Pitt for sure, but Jeremy Piven does make an appearance. We hear it's the pretty much the same as previous Ritchie movies: Fast paced scenes, impossible to understand accents, guns and diamonds.
This one takes place in London, but read on to live out your own "rocknrolla" dreams across the US...

Movie Set Travel: The Express
October 3, 2008 at 8:30 AM | 0 Comments
Fall often means one thing to a major portion of the US population: Football. Cue the opening of the season's newest football-themed film, "The Express." It's time for a hit after some pigskin-related clunkers like Leatherheads and We Are Marshall we say!
The Express is based on the life of college football hero Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. Davis grew up in a rough part of Southern New York state, and he went on to become an unstoppable running back at Syracuse University. He overcomes the odds, forcing his coach (Dennis Quaid) to re-examine the color barrier in the game and becoming an inspiring figure in the country's civil rights movement. We hear it's a playing field tear-jerker.
The film was shot mainly in Syracuse (with a few scenes done in Chicago) so read on for some great things to check out in Orange-town!

Movie Set Travel: Nights in Rodanthe
September 26, 2008 at 8:30 AM | 0 Comments
Snuggle up to the dropping temps with the just opened Nights in Rodanthe. Is Richard Gere aging well? Does Diane Lane look good even with a mousey haircut? Yes and yes. They're back on a more positive note (don't forget Unfaithful) as lovers who find each other in the midst of a terrible storm on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Adrienne Willis (Lane) plays a woman stuck in a bad marriage who has snuck away for a weekend to tend to a friend's inn on the beach (yep, all our friends have them too...) when the first (and only) guest, Paul Flanner (Gere) checks in as a major storm attacks the area. The two turn to each other for, ehem, comfort and of course their lives are changed forever.
This one was actually shot on the stunning beaches of Rodanthe, NC. Read on to create your own swept away weekend there this fall...
