You and All Your Friends Are Apparently Road-Tripping Over Memorial Day

In what has to be one of the weirder press releases we've read in a long time, U-Haul is literally yelling at people regarding "the true meaning of Memorial Day." Quote-unquote: "Memorial Day IS NOT about getting an extra day off from work, having a picnic with family and friends, or taking advantage of all the many sales that will be offered." That ought to do the trick, because if there's anything we know about the Internet it's that capital letters are extra persuasive.
And yet somehow it seems as if holiday travelers haven't gotten the memo. U-Haul's caps aside, more Americans will be vacationing over this year's Memorial Day travel period than ever before. In 2011 the five-day periodThursday through Mondaysaw zero increase over 2010. One year later, with an economy that's kind of sort of improving, road trips are expected to be up to the tune of half a million more travelers.

Are you psyched for Memorial Day yet? It's Monday, May 28, in case you hadn't yet penciled it into your iCal, and with the nice weather the US has had so far, it's going to be a doozy for traveling.
We know Foursquare is already beyond excited. The location-based social networking app is bracing for all the airport, airplane, turnpike, backyard BBQ and lobster shack check-ins that are sure to come from the long holiday weekend, and they've just shared with us the most popular airport (and other travel centers) from past Memorial Days, including the most checked-into city pairs!

OMG. Lobster Roll.
This is a call to action. Get your ass up and out to eat, and order the lobster roll, because it is on the menu and it is gooood. 'Tis the season and all that jazz, but for real: summer is the time of the year when you may get away with all sorts of usually outré things, like drinking Rosé before noon or paying $22 for a buttery roll stuffed with lobster salad.
Yesterday we bit into what will be the first of many lobster rolls of the next few months, and although we weren't anywhere near the Northeast, it was tasty as all get-out. The victim was the $22 "Lobster Roll and Fried Onions" at new Chicago seafood hipsterspot G.T. Fish and Oyster. The excitement the Windy City had for Big Star last summer has shifted, from tacos to oysters (although G.T. placed fish tacos on the menu).

And the Most Popular Memorial Day Spot for Celebs Was...
Memorial Day isn't just the kick off of summer; it's also the official start of the celebrity vacation season, and so far, it looks like it's going to be a busy one. Love birds Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez didn't waste anytime enjoying the long weekend in Maui, where they were spotted sharing some PDA during their Hawaiian vacation on Friday.
Meanwhile, plenty of celebs spent the weekend on European vacations too. Like Mad Man's Christina Hendricks, who showed off her curves near a swimming pool in Lake Como, Italy while Kim Kardashian showed off her new $2 million dollar engagement ring on a yacht in Monaco.

Wish You Were Here: Chicago's Oak Street Beach
Did the sun, temperature and humidity factors all work out to make your Memorial Day weekend ideal for some sunbathing and booty-shaking? It did in Chicago, even though it took until early yesterday. By noon Memorial Day, the lakefront path was packed with people strapped down like donkeys with beach chairs, sand pails and snack sandwichesnot to mention small Weber grills!
Last summer, we named our top 3 Chicago beaches, and although Oak Street Beach couldn't complete with the awesomeness of North Avenue or Ohio Street beaches, it remains the tourist favorite. Oak Street's swathe of sand is right off Michigan Avenue, thereby making it super convenient for anyone staying in a Magnificent Mile-area hotel (of which there are many). Add in the sceneryOak Street sits in the shadow of the John Hancock Center, Water Tower Place, the Park Hyatt, the Palmolive Building and moreand you've got a winning beach combo.

Five World Cities for Wearing White Pants Whenever You Want
Is your name Beyonce or Joe Jonas? Is there a day on your iCal marked "Diddy's White Party?" No? Then you're probably not breaking out the white pants very often during the year. Traditionally, white pants season (and relatedly, Sperry Topsider season) lasts from Memorial Day until the very last gasp of summer on Labor Day. Any other timewearing white is completely at your own risk...unless you take a trip to one of these five cities that wear white year-round:

Memorial Day Already Happened at SFO, with the Arrival of the 'Honor Flight'
Here's to a three-day weekend! We may all enjoy the first taste of summer relaxation with this upcoming Monday off of work, but it's okay to remember why the day has been dedicated a national holiday. Memorial Day isn't just sleeping until noon on a weekday, boozy brunching and maybe driving through the closest cemetery to view all the flags placed on veteran's graves. Memorial Day is about remembrance, and before we start into some Hallmark card-like spiel, we'll leave you with a photo of a touching scene we accidentally walked into while at San Francisco International Airport last week.
After disembarking our flight and heading out beyond security, towards the BART train, we passed by firefighters and policemen hoisting up American flags, and families decked out in red, blue and white awaiting the arrival of a very specific flight. Our first thought? Maybe they were here to welcome home servicemen on active duty. But no...

Fleet Week Comes to NYC This Wednesday: The Top Five Events
We've got two words for you: FLEET WEEK. More than 3,000 Marines, Sailors and Coast Guardsmen are cruising into NYC this week in what's something of an annual celebration of military-themed drink specials and dress whites. Central Park will be at its leafiest, the club districts will be hopping, and cougars will be out searching for young, clean-shaven prey. It's summer in the city at its finest.
It all starts this Wednesday at 8:30am with the Parade of Ships on the Hudson River. Fleet Week is a Wednesday-to-Wednesday deal, so the servicemen have time to go home to their families if they choose, or to party it up in the Big Apple for seven straight days. While they're off the ships, the behemoth vessels open up to public toursfor freefrom 8am to 5pm most days.
If your Memorial Day plans involve hanging out in NYC, we recommend hitting up a few of those tours and these next 5 events, our Top Five official events during Fleet Week:

How To Get Tickets To the Centennial Indy 500 Race
May is a big month for racing of all kinds. The Kentucky Derby is only a few weeks away, and at the end of the month is when a slightly faster race arrives to rev its engines. The Indianapolis 500 is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year—it's crazy to think that race-fast cars have been around that long—so if you’ve ever wanted join the crowds this might be the best year to do so.
There’s a lot of room for a lot of fans, so don’t worry if you haven’t gotten your seat just yet. Some of the fancy seats, vistas, and penthouses are no longer available through the general box office, but that’s fine with us because anyone waiting this long for a spot probably wont' want to spend in the triple digits or more for a seat.
