Can You Survive 8 Hours on a Bus? How About If It's Only $1?
Sitting in one place for 8 hours, traveling from city to citywhen you think of that, you're probably imagining a transcontinental flight, right? Well of course that can also be by train or bus, and increasingly it's the latter as MegaBus continues to go crazy in expanding its route network. The newest city to be tapped by the big blue bus is Omaha, Nebraska, an 8-hour and 40-minute journey from downtown Chicago, where Megabus' US operations regularly tie up rush-hour traffic.
As usual when Megabus announces new routes, they've put a whole slew of seats on sale for $1.00. Right now, that's 1,000 seats, and we double-checked some random August travel dates and the $1 fares are truly plentiful. Enter promo code OMA1K to knock the fares down to FREE. The only catch is that travel needs to happen before September 17, although Megabus' famous seats-for-$1 deal extends across all routes for the first few seats booked on each bus.
What we're trying to say is, that if you have to travel this new route (or any route) later this fall and still want the sweet $1 seat, you've got to get at it early, very early, as pricing goes up as the bus fills and as the departure date nears. Now the difficult decision: are you willing to endure a 9-hour bus trip if it costs less than even a Dunkin Donuts coffee?

$1 Megabus Tickets Claim More of the Country...from Pittsburgh
How are you getting where you're going this Memorial Day weekend? Chances are, a great variety of you will be hitting the road, both by car and bus (and pick-up truck hauling beer to a summer house). For the moment, we'd just like to focus on the bus, as Megabus has spent the early spring expanding their network to offer up more destinations starting from $1.
We love-love opening up the "where we travel" portion of a bus, train or airline company's website to have it explode with new lines. This is what just went down with Megabus; they made Pittsburgh, PA a hub only two weeks ago, and immediately opened up routes to Akron, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Toledo, and Toronto. Yesfrom Pittsburgh. We can't hardly believe it either.
Prior to the hub announcement, Pittsburgh only had some meh routes to Camden, Harrisburg, New York, Philadelphia, State College and Washington D.C.
As usual, all tickets for Megabus begin at $1 (book early to score those seats), and the buses come equipped with free WiFi and power outlets. You'll need all that if you choose a route like Pittsburgh-Toronto, trust us.

We love a good budget bus sale, especially when the starting price is $0.01. Sadly this isn't one of those practically-free blowouts, but Megabus has cut rates on their international routes to Canada and routes in Canada down to $10.
Want to head north when the weather warms up? Here's the deal: Megabus has 10,000 seats for $10 on each of its routes between Toronto and Montreal, and between Toronto and Niagara Falls, Ontario and Buffalo, NY. The dates for the discounted seats are between April 20 and June 23perfect for a little weekend trip to keep things interesting before summer vacation hits.

One of our favorite ways to travel the Northeast of the United States is by budget bus. That may not sound glamorous, but heythere's free wifi, legroom, we get to zone out while watching the scenery, and buses leave from and arrive to city centers. Starting December 15, Megabus will add Washington DC as a hub, with new routes from DC to Boston, Buffalo, Charlotte, Hampton, Va., Harrisburg, Penn, Knoxville, Tenn, Pittsburgh, Raleigh/Durham, N.C., Richmond, Va., and Toronto. Fatal Megabus Crash Teaches Important Lesson: Don't Sit Up Front
Although we've had our own list of the Top 5 Tips for Surviving Budget Bus Travel, we will now have to add "sitting at the front of a double-decker" to it after a fatal crash of a Megabus left four dead on Saturday. The cause? The bus had veered from its normal routes and was driving on roads unfamiliar to the driver when it drove into a railroad trestle bridge near Syracuse, NY, too low for the double-decker to pass underneath.
This Megabus, driving between Philadelphia and Toronto, was carrying only 28 passengers when the terrible accident occurred. It is the only fatal accident in Megabus' history, and the company says the incident is still under investigation.

To Megabus or BoltBus? That is the Question
In a desperate bid to escape the humid, 95+ temperatures of a summer New York City, we spent this last weekend two hours south in Philadelphia, where it's about three degrees cooler. It was a last-minute decision, and after seeing that Amtrak wanted $45+ per person for a one-way, two-hour ride on a non-Acela between the cities, we immediately turned to the budget bus options, because they at least have WiFi.

Megabus Announces Four New Cities and More $1 Tickets
Typically we like to announce new and cool airline routes on Fridays, but the possible United/Continental merger seems to be the biggest news this week, and plus we've got some Bus Travel routes to announce instead!
Get ready to bus it to these newest destinations from budget bus carrier Megabus when they start on Tuesday: Pittsburgh and State College in Pennsylvania from New York and Des Moines and Iowa City in Iowa from Chicago. They've just let the word slip on Twitter, and you know what happens when Megabus rolls up in new cities, right? They love to start the prices at $1!
We just checked up on the routes and indeed they are going for $1, but who knows for how long. This is your Friday evening assignment: make a plan to go somewhere new, and soon. A $1 quick trip from Chicago or New York could be just the weekend you need away from home, even if it is to some less exciting town. At least things will be cheaper there.

Megabus Releases 100,000 Free Tickets For Early 2010 Travel
It's that time of the year againthe time when budget bus company Megabus releases 100,000 free tickets for travel during their slow period after the holidays.
Starting today, book a Megabus ticket on any route for travel between January 6 and March 20, use promo code "GETAWAY," and enjoy a free ticket. The promo is part of an effort with NYC & Company, NYC’s marketing and tourism office, to get more people to the city. Ain't nothing wrong with that!
The deal is subject to availability though, so booking earlier is better. We tested it out by searching one of their longest routes, NYC to Toronto, and indeed it showed that all tickets were free at this time.
If you can handle a long bus ride versus a quickie plane trip, then Megabus will at least try to keep you comfortable and entertained with free WiFi, reclining seats, power outlets, on-board restrooms and the occasional double-decker bus (sitting up front on the top is pretty sweet/dangerous in a snowstorm). Just be sure to read through our list of The Top Five Tips For Surviving Budget Bus Travel first.
