Wrong-Way-Round (And Free) Art In London

November 11, 2008 at 9:30 AM | 0 Comments

An art gallery as famous as the Tate couldn’t hang a painting the wrong way, could they? Maybe yes, if the painting is abstract enough. There’s some loud muttering going down in London right now because some think Mark Rothko’s “Black on Maroon” series should have the stripes running horizontally.

The big Rothko exhibition at the Tate Modern will let you see Rothko’s abstract paintings--with Black on Maroon hanging vertically--until February next year, but nobody there will agree to even check the back of the paintings for the artist signature, which should give a clearer indication of which way is up.

So now that we can’t trust the Tate for good art, we might stick to bits of street art we can pick up for free: Adam Neate could get £43,000 ($67,000) a piece for his now-famous art, but on Friday he’s leaving 1,000 paintings all over London for anyone to claim as their own. And if you hang it the wrong way on your wall, at least you’ll be in good company.

Affordable Art Travel: Rothko Show Cheaper than London Auction Houses

If bidding on movie posters and overpriced contemporary art isn't your thing, London can still entice the trendy glasses crowd. The Tate Modern will host Rothko beginning September 26.

The first major show of his work in more than 20 years, it'll focus more on the artist's later work. His series of paintings for the Seagram Building in New York--a commission Rothko never finished--will be reunited for the first time.

Smart museum goers will book their £12.50 ($22) tickets online to avoid the sort of insane queues that Londoners love. The show continues through February 1, 2009.
