Mad Men-Style 'Draping' is the New Black.

March 29, 2012 at 11:46 AM | by | Comments (0)

Planking. Owling. Tebowing. Draping.

That's right—there's a new viral photo pose making the rounds and it's all because of the hype around the start of the fifth season of AMC's Mad Men. Don't dismiss Draping just yet, however. Unlike with the other poses, where the aim was to make you embarrass yourself for a photo, Draping is all about looking calm and cool, surrounded by whatever environment.

The pose originates with the opening credits of Mad Men, where the silhouette of protagonist Don Draper reclines on a chair, right arm up and extended, cigarette casually perched in hand. It's a simple pose to recreate and one that's perfect for staging a fun travel photo around. We tried it ourselves at NYC's famous graffiti-covered Five Pointz complex in Queens.

Though Draping will likely not even last as long as this season of Mad Men, some fans of the show have gotten creative enough to put together the above video. It's more than a cute attempt at going viral; it's a mini tour around New York City in beautiful spring weather. Enjoy.

'Mad Men' and the Case of Mohawk Airlines

March 27, 2012 at 4:55 PM | by | Comments (2)

Raise your hand if hearing the dah-na dah-na dah-na opening sequence of the AMC series Mad Men makes you feel good. Now that it's finally back for a fifth season, we're reminded of all the lovely retro cultural references that pop up in the show, especially those that relate to travel. Of all the brands who've worked with Sterling Cooper/Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, the most memorable of the travel labels have been Hilton Hotels and Mohawk Airlines.

We won't give away any spoilers for those who haven't yet streamed the Season 5 premiere--don't worry.

All we'll say is that Mohawk returns to the scene, after such a long absence following Sterling Cooper's dropping their account in a bid for the bigger fish—American Airlines. They ended up losing both seasons back, but Mad Men gained the public's curiousity in the real Mohawk Airlines. The official Mad Men website even has a brief article detailing the history of the defunct carrier.

True Blood and Mad Men Party All Over LA Around the Emmys

August 30, 2010 at 11:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

Emmy nominees don't just run into each other at the ceremony; they spend the weekend partying at various events around Los Angeles.

On Friday night, the place to be was the EW Women in Film Pre-Emmy Party held at the Sunset Marquis Hotel.

True Blood's Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, and Joe Manganiello schmoozed with fellow Mad Men nominees Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss, while the cast of Modern Family hung out with Sharon Stone and Glenn Close. It was definitely a who's who of TV stars and a chance to celebrate before the winners were announced.

Mad Men Takes A Sidetrip to Baltimore

July 28, 2009 at 8:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

As anyone who has walked by a New York City bus shelter in the last few days certainly knows, Mad Men returns to AMC for a third season on August 16. But while the omnipresent poster campaign ominously shows Don Draper drowning in his own office, producers have been extremely tightlipped about what’s going down on the show this season.

We did get this one travel-y tidbit from Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik, who tells us that in the season opener, Draper will actually leave New York to spend some time in Baltimore.

Draper jolts down to B-More to visit his clients at the London Fog factory, reportedly spending the night at the Hotel Belvedere—you can check out this historic Beaux Arts building, although it’s been converted to condos—and of course grabbing dinner at the legendary Haussner’s Restaurant—another one that’s sadly, recently gone—although the space is currently for sale. Any fans want to snatch it up and open a Mad Men-themed restaurant? We'd be more than happy to have a highball there.

AMC’s Emmy-winning drama Mad Men is returning for a third season on August 16, after the show’s first two seasons drew lots of acclaim but not nearly as many viewers. But it looks like plenty of viewers have been catching up on the DVDs during the show’s hiatus, because Mad Men is starting to cross that threshold from just another cable show everyone says you should be watching to a genuine cultural zeitgest.

Case-in-point: hip Boston watering hole Noir Bar will be greeting the new season with a Mad Men series premier party.
