How to Evacuate an Airbus A380

August 16, 2010 at 9:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

We don't need to tell you how important safety is when you're flying onboard the world' largest commercial passenger jet, the Airbus A380 with over 500 others, so when we recently hopped onboard the first flight of Lufthansa's new one, you can bet that we paid attention to the seatback safety card.

So much attention in fact, that we photographed the thing in detail for posterity, but thought it might be excellent to have this information out there for finicky flyers to study up on the superjumbo.

Check out our gallery of the A380's safety procedures here...

Eleven Original Videos from the First Flight of Lufthansa's A380

May 21, 2010 at 5:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

This is it. This is end of the week during which Lufthansa took delivery of their first superjumbo Airbus A380. It was an equally important week for us too, as we were fortunate enough to be on board the maiden flight from Airbus' private airfield at Hamburg-Finkenwerder down to Lufthansa's HQ in the Technik hangar at Frankfurt International.

We sincerely hope that you enjoyed our thorough coverage throughout the week, but we couldn't rest without sharing some of our videos with you, which really helped to capture the day—not to mention the massive size of this airliner. From boarding the plane to playing with the in-flight entertainment, and even rolling into the hangar at Frankfurt amidst partiers, all our videos are here. Check them out...

Inside the Cockpit of the A380 While 35,000 Feet Over Rotterdam

Where: Somewhere above Holland

Even though our trip on the first Lufthansa A380 flight is over, and we're nearing the end of our coverage of the event, we simply had to gush about five minutes of the flight where we joined the pilots in the cockpit.

As the only lucky folks onboard the flight were either top brass at Lufthansa, Rolls-Royce, and Airbus, journalists or invited elite Lufthansa frequent flyers, it was a pretty safe flight for leaving the cockpit door ajar. Which they did...and we sat like ten rows behind it. During the flight, which took us on low-flying passes over factories where parts of the A380 were made, as well as a view scenic detours over airport to show off, a few people managed to climb the few stairs into the A380 cockpit, and you know know we were not about to miss out on that.

Lufthansa's A380 First Class Has the Airplane Toilet of Our Dreams

Where: Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport, Hamburg, Germany

We're literally just coming down from our first Lufthansa A380 flight experience, and even though we were stuck with a middle seat in economy, we did manage to sneak around upstairs in the First and Business class sections.

In this A380 superjumbo plane, there's a plethora of new features that had us saying "WHAAT?! That is awesome!" A few of these include USB ports for charging or playing media from your mobile devices in all classes, touchscreen TVs with three channels of outside live view cameras, and massively upgraded bathrooms.

The latter, the bathrooms, were obviously most crazy-impressive in First Class, whose new design wasn't unveiled at all until yesterday, when we stepped onboard at Hamburg's Finkenwerder airfield, the private tarmac of Airbus. To see exactly what we mean by "crazy-impressive bathrooms," check out a video tour and our photo gallery after the jump!

Fresh from Frankfurt! Go Inside First Class, Business and Economy on Lufthansa's New A380

Heading to the second floor, for First Class and Business

Only a few hours ago, the first superjumbo Airbus A380 belonging to Lufthansa set out on its first flight, from Hamburg-Finkenwerder to Frankfurt International. We were onboard the flight, which should have only taken 40 minutes, but instead took over two hours as the plane made low passes over airports, factories where its parts were made, and even took a turn over Rotterdam for the scenery.

Before today, Lufthansa's new interiors for the A380 were kept tightly under wraps, especially so for First Class, which features an entirely new design for the eight seats, which cost around $10,000 per person for a round-trip from Frankfurt to Tokyo. So what makes them worth a hefty 10K? And how nice are the spiffified Business and Economy classes on the A380?

Behold! The First Pictures of Lufthansa's New Airbus A380

May 19, 2010 at 4:58 AM | by | Comments (4)

It's nearly 6am here at Hamburg Finkenwerder, the private airfield (which is more like a mini-city) of Airbus, and we're writing this in the middle of the press conference to hand over the first A380 to Lufthansa.

In only a couple more hours, after the pomp and circumstance dies down, we'll be boarding the superjumbo for her inaugural flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt. Be sure to stick around and follow along with us, but right now, we can't wait to show you what are the first unofficial photos of the Lufthansa A380, which we shot ourselves only moments ago as the first group of press to arrive on site here at XFW.

Check them out, after the jump!

Follow Along With Us On Lufthansa's First A380 Flight Tomorrow!

A tail stands guard over Lufthansa's headquarters outside of Frankfurt Airport

While you're safely snug in your beds and snoring away tonight, we'll be rising bright and early on Germany time to hop from Frankfurt Airport to Hamburg's Finkenwerder Field, otherwise known as the private airport of Airbus. What're we doing there, you ask? Naturally, we've hoofed it overseas for the First Flight of Lufthansa's new Airbus A380, which goes down tomorrow at 2pm CET (8am EST) when the airline takes delivery of the plane, currently the largest commercial airliner in the world.

If you're awake, the festivities will begin far before then, and thanks to the rumor that Finkenwerder will have WiFi, we'll be tweeting and blogging live from the event. And it doesn't stop there! Although we're one of more than 2,000 guests who get to bask in the A380's presence, we're also totally hopping onboard the plane as part of the 560 on the first flight from XFW to FRA. Know what that means? We'll have exclusive first looks at their ridiculously luxurious new first class cabin, business class and economy...all kept tightly under wraps until tomorrow.

How to follow along, after the jump!
