PEOPLExpress Still Plans On Flying, Maybe As Soon As This Summer
There hasn’t been a lot of recent news kicking around regarding PEOPLExpress and their plans to finally hit the skies. It sounds like they’re still quite a bit away from flying to here and there, but they’re still hard at work arranging the moo-lah, planes, and people to get things moving.
Down in Newport News, Virginia there’s some cash on the way for the airline as the regional airport committee recently gave the go ahead to get the ball rolling on a $500,000 loan to help bring the new carrier to the area. This would help PEOPLExpress acquire the necessary charter services and five airplanes, and finally get the show on the road.

Lufthansa Does a Little Brand Reshuffling to Prep for a New LCC
The world won’t be complete until each and every major carrier spins off its very own low cost carrier, and honestly that’s fine with us. Sometimes we don’t need handholding through each step of the booking and boarding process, and getting there with a cheapo carrier is something half the fun—kind of. Anyway, it looks like Lufthansa is the latest to focus on the discount model, and they’ve got all kinds of plans ready to go.
We haven’t had a chance to check out the PowerPoint, but it sounds like the mission involves merging their European and domestic options into a new carrier in hopes of shaving costs and improving efficiencies. These flights will be blended into the Germanwings brand as of January 1, as the carrier looks to fend off the competition in the region. Flights doing their thing with the Lufthansa livery out of spots like Frankfurt and Munich will continue to do so, as the plan doesn’t involve mixing things up at these two hubs.

Lion Air Plans Their Own Low-Cost Carrier to Stick It to AirAsia
Lion Air isn’t exactly a pricey carrier if you’re looking to bop around Asia, but it looks like they might just be getting a little bit cheaper. Clearly they’re sensing a little bit of unwelcome competition from other carriers, so they’re doing what everyone else is doing—they’re starting up their very own low cost carrier.
The plan will be to go up against AirAsia in Malaysia, as Lion Air will look to compete for your hard earned money. The new airline will take to the skies around May of next year, and it’ll be known as Malindo Airways. Obviously they’ll start small, but they’re already looking big with hopes of reaching around 100 planes within a decade or so.

More Bad News from PEOPLExpress Points to a 2013 Launch
There are no planes as of yet, but once again PEOPLExpress is already running into a little bit of difficulty. The last we heard from them was bad news based on government issued fines, and this latest update doesn’t sound that great either.
The folks over at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are reporting that the airline is delayed once again. There’s been no contract, agreement, or anything else related to securing some new airplanes—we’re thinking those are, like, step one in building an airline. Also, it sounds like the carrier isn’t exactly flying through the certification process, nor are they completing all the required paperwork in a timely manner.

Collect Them All: Spotting Low-Cost Airline Ads in Italy
As we recently made our way through Italy we couldn’t help but start thinking about planning our next adventure—or even a side trip. Of course we try to enjoy and embrace the moment, but in the back of our minds we’re always kind of thinking about where to head next and how to make it happen. It's an irresistible impulse.
Unfortunately for us this was made even more difficult when hopping on and off public transportation in spots like Venice, Milan, and Rome, as both the boat and train stations were quick to point out cheap flights and appealing destinations.

PEOPLExpress Hits Trouble Before Even Hitting the Skies
They haven’t even starting flying yet, and they’re already in trouble. Unfortunately, that's the case for the new airline with an old name—PEOPLExpress—as Uncle Sam already isn’t too fond of one of their business practices.
The airline has been promoting memberships into what its calling “Club Travelati,” as it hopes to get potential passengers to sign up for their flight and travel discount program. They’ve already taken down all the information from their website, but basically they were selling a service before it was really even available. That didn’t go over too well with the US Department of Transportation, so now the airline-to-be is getting hit with a $10,000 fine.

It's Been Four Years and We Just Can't Forget SkyBus
Like all major historical events, we’ll always remember where we were and what we were doing the day that SkyBus died. We were actually just turning on the Today showstill in bed—to the news that the crazy cheap carrier was boarding up shop and getting out of the airline business. Like so many others, we were left with cancelled reservations (from North Carolina to Southern California), a bummer considering we'd just tested out SkyBus only a few weeks before the bankruptcy.
This month marks the four-year anniversary (April 4, 2008) of the bankruptcy and, unfortunately, that trip now only lives on in our memories. Hey, at least we got to try SkyBus before it went belly up. Rising fuel costs and a cash flow that was more of a trickle made for the downfall of the airline.

Iberia Express Starts Selling Cheap Tickets for a Cheaper Spanish Vacation
It’s time for a new spinoff low cost carrier, as the suits and bean counters over at Iberia thought it was a great idea to start another airline with a brand new name. Iberia Express is scheduled to start selling tickets as soon as March 28—at least per their website—and after that it’ll be all low fares all the time. At least that’s what we’re hoping for!
The plan for Iberia Express is to connect cities in Spain with spots tourists and locals that want to visit. Initial destinations include spots like Madrid along with some of the country’s more famous island destinations—think Ibiza, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Initially the new airline will just be doing its thing with a fleet of four Airbus A320s, so it’ll be quite some time before they’re flying to more cities and destinations. However, it does sound like there are some long term plans for Iberia Express, so hopefully there will be plenty of expansion and growth if everything goes as planned.

Another Day, Another New Airline: Welcome Jetstar Pacific to Vietnam
When it comes to creating and launching low-cost carriers, it seems like existing carriers can’t resist running the numbers and throwing some startup cash behind these new airlines. The latest cheapo carrier seems to be a collaboration between Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar, and Qantas. Their plan is to takeover Vietnam—in a good way—with cheap and affordable flights to here, there, and everywhere.
Jetstar Pacific Airlines is the name of the new startup, and they’re already kind of flying around. The airline can be construed as just a refurbishment and update, since the existing carrier is getting an influx of cash, new opinions, and some new aircraft. The government was paying for part of the airline, but now it sounds like costs are being distributed between the checkbooks of Vietnam Airlines and Australia’s Qantas Group—of which JetStar is a part—with most of the cash coming from Vietnam Airlines.

PEOPLExpress is Back in Business and Calling Virginia Home
Whoa crazy airline news! Remember PEOPLExpress? Well, we don’t either—we’re a little too young—but the airline did the low-fare thing during much of the 1980s before being gobbled up by Continental Airlines. Well, PEOPLExpress is coming back, and they’re looking to start up service to and from Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, VA. Of course we’re reminded of recent airline failures like Skybus or JetAmerica, but nonetheless we are excited to see what they’re all about.
The plan for the new PEOPLExpress is to bring back some of the fun in flying, and they’re promising “unsurpassed customer service” along with “value, integrity, and ingenuity.” They’re already touting no hidden fees or charges, and they’ll even be happy to check your luggage for free. You’ll get a seat assignment prior to boarding, and they’re going to accomplish all of this with one-way fares that could start as low as $69.

Today We Learn Even More About Scoot, Asia's Next Budget Airline
So not too long ago—like yesterday—we were chatting about Singapore Airline’s newest offshoot that will be known as Scoot. Well today we got a little more information about the carrier, thanks to a tip from our buddy Will Horton over at the Wings Down Under blog—thanks again!
As you can see above, a rendering of the new paint job is already kicking around, and we have to say that it’s kind of cute. For a major carrier we’d probably have some reservations, but for a low-cost carrier it looks just right. As far as routes are concerned it sounds like the new airline will be doing its best to help out the big brother over at Singapore Airlines, and it won’t really be competing or going head-to-head on any existing routes.

Making a 'Scoot' to Singapore Will Officially Be an Option in 2012
We knew it was coming, and now it’s here—well, kind of. Singapore Airlines’ newest business venture—its very own low-cost carrier—has been unveiled and it’s going to be known as “Scoot.”
Scoot will be using Boeing 777s to serve the new low-cost routes, and if everything goes as planned it should be up and running by June of 2012. The airline’s base will be in Singapore—obviously—doing its thing to and from the city’s awesome Changi International Airport. The exact routes haven’t been announced just yet, but they’re planning to focus on routes between five and ten hours from the main hub. That means lots of Asia, plenty China, along with some spots in Australia.
