The Countdown to (Free) In-Flight WiFi on JetBlue Starts Now

September 19, 2012 at 2:34 PM | by | ()

Holy smokes it's been far too long since we last had anything to say about JetBlue's efforts to bring precious, precious in-flight WiFi to their fleet. It was April 2011 when the airline boasted that they were pouring $30 million into the project to make their WiFi "the industry's best inflight broadband for commercial aviation," and October 2011 when they launched the satellite.

Then...silence. Until this week.

Don't get too excited; internet isn't onboard yet. Or do get excited, since we finally have a general date for the beginning of service: early 2013. The news comes direct from Robin Hayes, JetBlue's Chief Commercial Officer, who was probably pretty thrilled to let the fact slip at the low-cost carrier conference in London. But wait—that's not even the cool part!

JetBlue's Very Special Wednesday Departure from Kazakhstan

Where: Kazakhstan
October 17, 2011 at 11:24 AM | by | ()

The folks over at the JetBlue Blog already stole our plans for a Borat reference, but the airline does have some exciting stuff departing from Kazakhstan this week. If you remember back a few months, it’s actually all part of JetBlue’s $30 million investment to load some in-flight WiFi onboard their entire fleet.

This week the ViaSat-1 satellite is scheduled for blastoff, and if everything goes as planned it’ll be JetBlue's first step towards getting some of the most advanced onboard connectivity to their planes. If the weather remains as expected, the plan is to launch the ViaSat-1 satellite this Wednesday around 2:45pm—east coast time. All the fun will take place from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan—you know—just in case you're, like, in the neighborhood.

June 28, 2011 at 10:33 AM | by | ()

Three cheers for in-flight entertainment! Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hoo...misses the days of crossword puzzle magazines and listening to your CD player on a flight? Not us! And thankfully, not the airlines either as the majority of US carriers engage in a race to see who can have the biggest seatback TVs or the fastest in-flight WiFi.

Like it or not, what the airlines offer can vary greatly, especially where movies or music is involved. Thus, in the interest of helping you to be the coolest and most informed traveler around, we've laid out exactly what to expect when you sit in your seat. Our annual guide (now in its third year) highlights domestic carriers, plus the bonus of Air Canada because they get around the US enough. Enjoy, travel happily, and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Better Late Than Never, Continental to Get 200 Planes with In-Flight WiFi

March 29, 2011 at 9:04 AM | by | ()

Better late than never, hm? That's what we're saying this week after United/Continental made the announcement that they're going for the whole in-flight WiFi thing. Specifically, United will be expanding their trial program from 14 757s to over 200 of Continental's domestic 737s and 757s, which they plan to have up and ready for your in-flight Facebooking next year.

Now here's the real news: although United's original 14 planes with connectivity used Gogo's in-flight WiFi service (the current industry leader), they've switched allegiance to outfit the upcoming 200+ planes with LiveTV, a subsidiary of JetBlue. It actually makes perfect sense, however, because the 200+ planes already have LiveTV for its in-flight DirectTV. Now that LiveTV also offers satellite in-flight WiFi, Continental is just adding that in.
