Celebs Want You To Participate in Voluntourism With Them This Week

October 21, 2009 at 11:18 AM | by cmb | 0 Comments

If you've watched any network TV this week you may have felt the sudden urge to do good. That's because the networks have teamed up with iParticipate—an industry-wide initiative aimed at urging viewers to participate in volunteerism—to include story lines that spotlight community service. That's also why the photo shoot on last week's Ugly Betty had a Nothing But Net theme and why Kenneth the page is going to try to adopt all of the dogs at a local shelter on Thursday's night's episode of 30 Rock. Not only will your favorite shows have a "do good" theme but the commercials will too. Several A-Listers, like Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew Mcconaughey, have taped ads for iParticpate reminding us that by helping others, we help ourselves.

But the Entertainment Industry Foundation, who is spearheading the initiative, isn't just spreading the message through TV, they have also scheduled several star-studded events this week to encourage people to get involved in their community. For instance, today, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba will donate her time along with more than 50 volunteers for a day of service at the Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas beginning at 10:30 AM.

Vegas.com Spoofs SportsCenter To Encourage Tourism

October 9, 2009 at 4:28 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

Most people have at least a passing knowledge of the famous ESPN SportsCenter ads, where sports mascots work as employees in the SportsCenter studio. Vegas.com is trying to build on that familiarity with a new Las Vegas campaign, except they're replacing franchise mascots with casino characters and the SportsCenter studio with... um...the Vegas.com studio? Maybe? The entire campaign could actually stand to be a little bit more punchy. Also a little bit more funny.

The clips are being posted over at Vegas.com/exposed. After the jump we've put one of the commercials, a spot that plays on the Treasure Island pirates. When we originally found this thing on AdFreak they included it with a clip starring Carrot Top. We obviously like you guys too much to expose you to that.

Jaunted's Top Three Tips For A Desert Road Trip To Las Vegas

October 6, 2009 at 10:33 AM | by Jennifer Kester | 1 Comment

To save some bucks and see some great desert scenery, road trip it to Las Vegas from California. It's a great last-minute-getaway option instead of paying pricey plane tickets and bag fees, and another perk is that hotels like the Luxor and the MGM Grand offer free self-parking for guests. We recently made the six-hour trek from San Diego and came out better for it, thanks to some tips.

Las Vegas Doubles Down On Angry Rodent-Based Tourism Campaign

September 17, 2009 at 4:13 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority hasn't had the easiest time in the recession, even accounting for their frustrating ability to hijack international tourism in the name of short-term profits. So the Authority reached out to ad agency R&R Partners for some TV spots, and the agency responded with a strategy built around office drones using a fake holiday to get Mondays off. A fake holiday about rage-filled chinchillas. Chinchilli Day.

The second spot just dropped and has the office worker spinning a Three Musketeers tale of French heroism. It builds on the first spot, where Chinchilli Day had an exactly opposite background and the animals were cast as the villains. Sin City is in the midst of a rebranding campaign highlighting angry rodents, and by all accounts it seems to be working. Terrific.

Check out the following two commercials after the jump.

Please Don't Ever Change, McCarran Airport (When It Comes To Free WiFi)

September 11, 2009 at 5:13 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

We've sung the praises of the free airport WiFi at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas before but now that we're sitting pretty in the airport's B Terminal surfing the incredibly fast network, we realize just how much this service means to us.

We spent the past two nights at Encore Las Vegas where, despite the use of a Verizon Wireless Card, we found our signal extremely slow in the rooms. We were able to find a great place to work in the hotel's Lobby Bar and Cafe but the whole point of working from a hotel during a trip is to be able to hide away in your pajamas while you work.

So today, we're extremely grateful that McCarran has continued to offer free WiFi. This new B terminal also rocks. It's bright, airy, clean and has plenty of Wheel of Fortune slots. There's also a 360 Burritto shop, a Fox Sports Bar and a Starbucks. Kinda makes the inevitable Leaving Las Vegas hangover a little more bearable.

God Bless Vegas, Where Swim-Up Gambling Is A Right

Where: 4455 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89169
July 2, 2009 at 12:37 PM | by egw | 2 Comments

Last one in's a rotten egg! We're finding the best places in the world to stick our toes in this summer (or next winter) for our World's Coolest Pools map. Know of any pools we must check out? Let us know.

Some lucky people will endure long drives this weekend for the privilege of seeing their families and setting off fireworks in their faces, and so we're keeping this week's cool pool in the family as well. Our sister site HotelChatter has been gaga over the continuing renovations to the Hard Rock Las Vegas like, forever and now baby VegasChatter is getting into the act. But don't fix it if it isn't broken! And by "it," we mean the Hard Rock Vegas pool, featuring everything to which a body could possibly want to swim up.

Pick Your Departure Time Carefully When Driving To and From Vegas

July 1, 2009 at 1:25 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Last week we drove out to Las Vegas from Los Angeles and boy, was it a doozy. While we were happy to save on airfare (weekend tickets to Vegas start at around $150 round-trip; gas was about $75), we just happened to choose the worst times to leave Los Angeles on the way out there and to leave Las Vegas coming home.

We left on Thursday at 4:25pm from Santa Monica which is prime traffic time in L.A. but we couldn't skip out of work any earlier. This was also the day that Michael Jackson died and everyone was flooding the Westside to camp out at the UCLA Medical Center. So try to avoid departing on a day that a major pop icon dies in Los Angeles. For instance, when Britney kicks the can in Malibu, put off your trip for another few hours or possibly a day, if her death was "too soon."

The Palazzo Is For Rebounds, Just Ask Audrina

June 9, 2009 at 9:22 AM | by cmb | 0 Comments

Thankfully, Chris Pine took our advice and finally dumped Audrina Patridge. Apparently, the "Star Trek" star’s people felt the same way we did, and convinced him that a guest spot on an MTV reality series would not be the best move for his career:

“Chris Pine was forced to dump Audrina because his camp wants him to take the right strategic steps to become a big movie star. Dating a reality show star would tarnish his image.”

Good News for Geeks: Star Trek, The Experience Will Reopen in May

Where: 3000 Paradise Road [map], Las Vegas, NV, United States, 89109
March 27, 2009 at 8:41 AM | by Omri | 0 Comments

For 10 years the Las Vegas Hilton hosted Star Trek: The Experience, an alternative for tourists inexplicably seeking something beyond Sin City's decadent cocktail of hookers, booze, and gambling.

The exhibition had Star Trek-themed rides, Star Trek-themed shops, and Star Trek-themed characters. The word "immersion" was thrown around with abandon. The world was filled with light and joy.

Then last year the stars flickered out and darkness descended. The Hilton's contract with the owners expired. The exhibition was left without a home. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth heard throughout the Kingdom of Dorkdom Universe of Geekdom.

But now, perk up geeks.
