Will The Portable Laptop Desk Raise You Up?

May 4, 2009 at 4:26 PM | by | Comments (0)

We can tell we've spent too many nights bathed in the warm glow of our laptops not when we develop the trademark hominid slump, but when one of our wrists feels like it's being cinched by a bracelet 24/7. (Always the left hand, never the right... why?!) The SkyMall Portable Laptop Desk would solve both of those problems by adjusting our computers at a supposedly kinder angle, but would it mean computing freedom or just the danger of dropping our laptop on our faces?

The desk elevates your computer off your lap or a desk to a precarious angle where you can (theoretically) type without pain and (probably) not burn your legs. Portable DVD players or books would also fit in this stand, which we can only guess works through magic since it requires no assembly and we can see no visible stress.

At $119.95, we're afraid we wouldn't get enough use out of the Portable Laptop Desk to justify its purchase, but we do have a dream of being able to type comfortably from bed. What do you think?

Queenslanders Not Backward in Going Forward With Facebook

December 5, 2008 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

You might not know about the cheesy 1980s marketing pitch for the north-eastern Australia state of Queensland: "Beautiful one day, perfect the next."

While tropical storms and embarrassing politicians might have spoiled this image of perfection, you can't say Queensland's not trying in the tourism game. They've even got an official Facebook page and we actually like it.

It's a lively page with people leaving messages on the "wall" (usually Queenslanders giving a really biased opinion), competitions to enter and useful info on festivals and events taking place around the state. And last time we checked, Queensland was the proud owner of 2,128 fans.

According to this Facebook page, Queensland's current logo is "Where else but Queensland?" A risky marketing strategy because actually, there are plenty of alternative answers to this rhetorical question. We'll be generous enough to leave it unanswered.

Hip Cities Like Sydney Want Friends on MySpace

November 20, 2008 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (3)

Cities have MySpace pages now? Who knew? Turns out that Sydney has got its own MySpace haunt because they want to persuade young Americans to head Down Under to boost the Aussie economy rather than helping out their own. Well, that's just our interpretation.

Now that US citizens aged 18 to 30 can get a working holiday visa for Australia, Sydney reckons it's got the goods to attract people: Surf and sand, plenty of jobs, good nightlife and decent places to study if you're so inclined.

Sydney--at least its MySpace version--doesn't have too many friends yet, and it has even fewer comments on its forum questions. But don't let that be an indication of whether this city is actually friend-worthy. Just because we think Melbourne's better doesn't mean you can't add Sydney as a friend: Melbourne isn't even cool enough to have a MySpace page yet.
