Finally! JetBlue Releases Its First iPhone App: The Full Review

February 3, 2012 at 11:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

Alright. What's the one thing you've been waiting forever for from JetBlue? Duh, in-flight WiFi...besides that. Yes, a freaking iPhone app!

Well, late last night while thoughts of Terra Blue Chips and direct flights to Santo Domingo danced through your heads, the airline's very first iPhone app quietly snuck out into the iTunes app store. It's free of course, and blue and orange, but is it any good?

To keep our opinions short and sweet, yes—it's sooooo good. Like, spread-the-word good. Even if you've never flown JetBlue and don't have any upcoming flights booked, we'd say get the thing for its well-designed flight search and booking (wanderlust fodder right there) and cute little extras, like the ability to use your iPhone photos to create funky postcards, shared straight from the app.

New Planes and New Seats Making Southwest Feel So Fresh, So Clean for 2012

February 3, 2012 at 10:04 AM | by | Comments (0)

We were just talking about Southwest Airlines and their plans to “evolve” their planes with new seats, and now it looks like the carrier is already prepared to go all-in. Southwest is starting to get those fresh birds, and they’re shifting around the schedule here and there to make room for the increased seats and different configurations.

They’re pretty excited about that this evolve-o-lution, but we kind of wonder how our knees will feel about all these changes.

Scoot Unveils Cabin Crew Uniform, One Step Closer to Flying

Where: Singapore
January 17, 2012 at 9:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

One of the most exciting low-cost carriers to come out of Singapore has taken one step closer to hitting the skies. Last week our friends over at Scoot announced the frocks their cabin crew will be sporting on their inaugural flight. As expected, the companies signature golden yellow is a feature color to make the livery part of the cabin.

Black and yellow color blocking, females get a smart shift dress with a v-neck. Properly fitting and casual is the name of the game for the ladies walking the aisles. The dress is accented with the Scoot logo on the front left side. The ladies will turn heads, à la Pan Am, when walking through the airport for their Sydney launch in June.

What the Heck is Carpatair?

January 9, 2012 at 2:42 PM | by | Comments (0)

We thought we'd heard of most airlines here at Jaunted. Hell, we even thought that between all of us, we'd flown them. Alas we were stumped when we recently checked in at Italy's Bari Airport and came face to face with the check-in desk for Carpatair.

What was this exotic-sounding carrier? The cute woman wheeling her carry on looked retro, while the name gave us flashes of Ali Baba and flying carpets, rolled in with a bit of Carpathian mountains. Could it be Romanian?

2012 is Totally Japan's Year...for Aviation

Where: Japan
January 3, 2012 at 11:26 AM | by | Comments (0)

2011 wasn't a banner year for Japan, not to mention for any industry in the country. We saw the ripple effects of natural disasters throughout the aviation world with the Japanese earthquake and resulting tsunami topping the list. What can be more indicative of Japanese pride, but to quickly rebuild stronger and better? Fortunately for us, airlines are towards the top of the progress.

· Peachy Keen
Last year we talked about the introduction of ANA's budget carrier based out of Osaka, Peach. With only 3 destinations, the airline will draw business passengers, eventually moving into the leisure market. Flights are taking off in March and tickets are already to purchase.

Happy Peach Fares have no baggage allowance or advanced seat selection but are quite affordable at around $175 return to Sapporo. If you need the sweet little perks, cough up about $75 more. Happy Peach Plus fares allow you to pick where you park yourself on the plane and some space in the belly for your luggage. With a bright purple livery and cabin, Peach is on our short list!

The Naughtiest Flight Attendants of 2011 Are...

December 30, 2011 at 9:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2011 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2012, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2011 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Each and every year there are plenty of naughty flight attendants getting into trouble, and it usually involves wearing something a little bit different from the company-issued uniform, or not wearing something at all. This year, Canadian flight attendants stripped for their Turbulence Calendar of 2012—nice, eh—and of course getting frisky in the cockpit is sure to get you on Santa’s naughty list. However, when the final votes were tallied we just had to give out this year’s naughtiest flight attendants award to the high-flying ladies of Ryanair.

Norwegian Air Shuttle Confirms 2013 Will Be Its Year for Cheap 787 Flights

Where: Norway
December 21, 2011 at 8:13 AM | by | Comments (0)

We’re only weeks away from 2012, but we’re already looking forward to some exciting stuff scheduled to land further in the future. The new year definitely has cool plans in store for commercial flights, but 2013 is when Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to link the United States with Scandinavia—on the cheap.

There was some news kicking around about the airline’s plans for low-cost, long-haul routes, and it sounds like things are still moving full speed ahead. Best of all it sounds as though NAS will utilize Boeing 787s on the new routes, so this might be one of the cheapest ways to experience the Dreamliner in all its glory. Even if Norwegian Air Shuttle goes no-frills, some of the 787's standard features should still shine through. Just so you know, right now they’ve got like six of the brand new birds on order.

Vueling Parodies Great Aviation Moments in Movie History

December 16, 2011 at 10:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

We don't talk about the Spanish carrier Vueling, but then sometimes no news is good news. The exception is when an airline pulls a stunt that pokes fun at themselves or the industry, as Vueling has just done with their crew Christmas video.

Watch it above. The idea is that classic aviation scenes from iconic movies are acted out by Vueling staff in parody. A prime example is the scene from Snakes on a Plane, recreated by Vueling with snakes arm sock puppets.

Of course we love stuff stuff that's winky like this, but even more we appreciate that it's not loaded with "Merry Christmas/Tis the Season" stuff. Can you name all the movies they've referenced?

Sir Stelios and 'FastJet' Scheduled to Depart Soon from Africa

December 15, 2011 at 8:32 AM | by | Comments (0)

When we least heard from Sir Stelios there was news about a potential new low-cost carrier that would focus on more long-haul routes. We guess the potential for cheap flights between London and New York is still there, but now it sounds like his low-cost model is shifting to a different continent altogether.

The founder of easyJet is thinking that the next great success in the airline industry will take place in Africa. He’s already working to get funding in place, and there are some deals being done between his group and Rubicon Diversified Investments in hopes of creating a new low-frills, low-cost airline. The placeholder name—FastJet—is now apparently the working name of the new air venture.

Hong Kong Airlines Will Also Birth a Baby Budget Carrier in 2012

December 1, 2011 at 8:40 AM | by | Comments (0)

Asia seems to be the breeding ground for LCCs with announcements about Peach, Scoot, and Jetstar Japan. Last week the chief at Hong Kong Airlines announced that they'd be doing a regional subsidiary as well. Hong Kong Express will be re-branded and operate as a low-cost carrier to compete with the slew of budget airlines popping up all over the region.

The full transition will take place middle of 2012 and flights will serve mainland China, South Korea, Japan and southeast Asia. Airbus A320s will hit the skies, but what the livery will look like (or even the airline's name), we can't yet be sure.

From Iceland Express to Iron Maiden Air? Hey, It Could Happen.

November 23, 2011 at 11:34 AM | by | Comments (3)

It's still one month until Christmas and already we've found a lump of coal in our stocking. Yesterday, the low-cost airline Iceland Express went out of business after its operator, Astraeus, went bankrupt. This sucks! It's bad news no only because it's horrible when a company travelers count on ceases to operate, but also because Iceland Express' cheery orange planes were the only option for affordable one-way flights from New York to Iceland, and even on to Europe.

Going roundtrip on Iceland Express from New York to Reykjavik could go as low as $399, and secretly we've been dreaming of hopping a transatlantic cruise, then returning from London via Iceland Express with a stopover in Iceland. Perhaps it all seemed too perfect, we knew it wouldn't last. The airline even had Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson as a pilot.

EasyJet Will Assign You That Seat, Thank You Very Much

November 21, 2011 at 1:44 PM | by | Comments (0)

On one hand, EasyJet shows all the signs of being an ultra-budget LCC. The airline isn't as obnoxious about their exorbitant fees and/or lack of services as Spirit Airlines or Ryanair, but they did pointedly ring up Prince Harry on a bunch of fees the last time he flew with them. They even charged him extra for checking through his green army bag, which was issued to him while he was serving in Afghanistan, among other places. Thoroughly charming.

On the other hand, the British airline has made a number of moves implying that they want to be something more than a "frugal LCC" also-ran. They've led the way on genuinely innovative features like offering in-flight trip insurance, and they were the first UK commercial airline to coat their planes with nano-paint so they could fly more efficiently.
