Airline Report: Comparing Continental to Superman

October 9, 2006 at 11:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

"Best U.S. airline:" is it not an oxymoron? Many of us would rather take a toothpick to the eye than submit to a coach long-haul on a "legacy" carrier (though we sometimes have to do that, anyway). The Los Angeles Times doesn't think so; this weekend they sang the praises of Continental in an article that proposed it could be "the airline of the future."

If Continental is making money catering to the business traveler, good for them. For us? Not so much. In fact, almost nothing about this article makes us want to fly with them much at all. Take this gem: "We're very much an airline that's geared toward the business traveler," says a marketing exec, but, his cohort adds "we're happy to take leisure customers along with us." Suddenly we feel like a kid sibling "happily" taken on our big brother's camping trip with his buds--you know, the 'rents forced him to.

Fact is, though, Continental kinda does fly everywhere, with a bunch of non-stops to destinations previously linked to the U.S. only by a day of connection hell. We find their transcons and flights to the U.K. somewhat tolerable, and perhaps we could make due with longer ones if you want to hook us up with an Ambien supplier. Still, this seems like a pretty good time to beg JetBlue for a far-off international route or two.

Daily Traveler Bows Out

April 17, 2006 at 4:28 PM | by | Comment (1)

Too bad, but it looks like LA Times blog The Daily Traveler will be shuffling off this mortal coil after but a brief six months of existence. It was a enjoyable site, finding good industry stories and presenting them in a not-too-geeky way (shh! We know what we are), but according to them, the numbers of the site were not enough to stay open.

The blog may soldier on, unaffiliated with the L.A. Times, but much remains unclear. Connecting Flights and Enplaned both flamed out pretty fast, too, so you never know with those darn travel blogs. We think their mistake was not enough stories about Natalie Portman and South Park, but that's just us.
