The Hamptons See Star Power Even In The Low Season

November 19, 2009 at 2:04 PM | by cmb | 0 Comments

The Hamptons have always been a hot spot for celeb activity, but this week it's the North Fork region of Long Island that has the big names. Yesterday, Tom Cruise was spotted jogging on Route 25 through Orient and East Marion with his bodyguard, who rode along side him on a bicycle. Tom seemed to be enjoying his run and waved to fans as they drove by. He was probably happy to have a few days off.

Tom's been busy working on the movie Knight and Day with Cameron Diaz in Boston. The production was scheduled to move to Salzburg, Austria today but Austrian filmmakers protested a tax incentive offered to Cruise and company by Salzburg authorities. In response to the backlash, the shoot has been cut down to just 7 days rather than the three weeks they had originally scheduled. Tom and Cameron will also be shooting in Spain and Hawaii over the next few week.

So, what would bring Tom Cruise to eastern Long Island in the middle of November? Most likely, his third anniversary with wife Katie Holmes. Mrs. Cruise is currently filming The Romantics in Southold, NY with co-stars Adam Brody, Elijah Wood, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel and Malin Akerman. The cast seems to be making themselves at home while filming in Long Island. Adam Brody and Katie Holmes have been frequenting the Starbucks in Greenport while Elijah Wood was recently seen at Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck.

Tom and Katie, left Tokyo behind, as well as Katie's hair-extensions. Whitney Port left The City and returned to The Hills. Newlyweds Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen went on a "Meet the Family" trip to Brazil while Kanye West left Fashion Week in Paris. Lastly, Taylor Swift made the long journey home from Oz. For some celebs, there's no place like home we guess.

Last Chance For Several Mainstage Hits This Month

January 7, 2009 at 1:00 PM | by egw | 1 Comment

It's closin' time! New York visitors hoping to catch up on some recent Broadway hits better hurry up in this record month of shuttering shows.

Already in January, top earners like "Hairspray" and "Spamalot" and seasonal hits like "Slava's Snowshow" and "White Christmas" have closed their doors. This week, the much-TONY'd "Gypsy" and the Katie Holmes vehicle "All My Sons" joins them; next week, it's time for Best New Musical winner "Spring Awakening." Judging by last week's grosses, Best Play winner "August: Osage County," Daniel Radcliffe nudie pick "Equus" and Piven's folly "Speed-the-Plow" will be next.

On the bright side, now that you know these are not long for this world, you can stop by the new TKTS booth--now accepting credit cards for the insolvent!--in Times Square for some last-minute sales. Given flexibility, theater crazies might indeed find it to be the most wonderful time of the year after all.

Star Power Boosts 2 Shows

Where: New York, NY
December 10, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

Katie Holmes carries daughter Suri Cruise out of their New York apartment en route to work on her Broadway show, "All My Sons." (Katie's, not Suri's.)

Theatre snobs who had doubts about Holmes' chops when she signed on to the Arthur Miller adaptation must have been disappointment when the producers announced Monday they had recouped their initial investment in the show. A hit! A palpable hit! That puts "All My Sons," financially speaking, ahead of other celeb vehicles like "Speed-the-Plow" (Jeremy Piven, Elisabeth Moss from "Mad Men") or "Equus" (Daniel Radcliffe) and blockbusters like "Young Frankenstein," which recently posted its closing notice. Not to mention shows whose planned Broadway debuts were canceled due to the recession like "Godspell" and "Brigadoon."

The other show that just announced it made bank, "The Seagull," also had star power on its side -- although the tabloid-scarce Kristin Scott Thomas and Peter Sarsgaard. Like "All My Sons," its limited run ends in January, which means Broadway may be asking for a bailout from its New York audience members when the year of the "naycation" takes hold. Our advice: Cast Nick Spangler, "Amazing Race" co-winner and current Off-Broadway actor, in your show. Can't lose.

Britney's Working Holiday

December 1, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

For Britney Spears, this weekend brought all work and no play. While her documentary "For The Record" was showing in the US, Spears performed on Britain's popular TV show "X Factor" (creators of Leona Lewis) and at the Bambi Awards where she was given the Best International Pop Star award.

So what were our other favorite stars up to this weekend? The Cruises and Beckhams took New York together even though Katie Holmes had to work all weekend--er, perform in "All My Sons." Miley Cyrus hit the Big Apple as well, although we hope she's not moving here! Divorced stars Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon broke bread together with their kids for the holiday, while Alex Rodriguez left his kids in New York while he took in a Madonna concert in Miami. Demi, Ashton and Bruce also celebrated together, and we know they're all friends, but that's kind of creepy.

Will Smith took his crew to Hawaii and Michael Phelps took his new girlfriend, a waitress in Vegas, home to Maryland to meet Mom. And Eva Longoria set tongues wagging when she attended a wedding by herself. Have we all had enough vacation yet?

Fall Culture Travel: On Broadway, Unhappy Families Are All Alike

September 18, 2008 at 1:05 PM | by egw | 0 Comments

The Arthur Miller revival "All My Sons" begins previews on Broadway today, starring John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest as patriarch and matriarch of a clan wrecked by the aftermath of World War II.

Patrick Wilson ("Little Children" and Friday's "Lakeview Terrace") is their son, a vet in love with his MIA brother's girlfriend, played by that one TV actress who was on the WB in the '90s... what's her name? Surely it will come to us...

You can also put the "fun" back into "dysfunction" on Broadway this fall with Chekhov's "The Seagull," in which a famous actress (Kristin Scott Thomas) neglects her son in favor of her new lover (Peter Sarsgaard) and brand-new blockbuster musical "A Tale Of Two Cities," in which the French Revolution threatens to tear a young couple apart. If Mum and Dad can't handle it, take 'em to "Shrek"--as far as we know, he's an orphan.

Holiday Travel: TomKat Fritter Away Their Fourth

July 7, 2008 at 1:30 PM | by egw | 1 Comment

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and baby Suri went for a stroll on Independence Day in Telluride, Colorado. Cruise has owned a home in the ski town for years, sharing the local mountain air with Oprah and Oliver Stone.

Other stars used their holiday weekend to visit summer homes, plan sexy getaways or just get out of the house for a bit.

Broadway Travel: Katie Does Arthur Next Spring

May 14, 2008 at 9:00 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

It was threatened, and now it will probably come to pass: Katie Holmes is in talks to appear in Arthur Miller's play "All My Sons" next year on Broadway, meaning that next year's Tony Awards will all be about The Holmes (and the creepy, scenery-devouring shadow of The Cruise as well).

Holmes is rumored to be playing the role of Ann Deever, the play's beautiful young catalyst and the daughter of a man convicted of shipping defective airplane parts to the troops during World War II. Shouldn't she be easing into this Broadway thing? We hear "Chicago" has openings.

Tom Cruise's Weird Love Affair With Germany

Where: Berlin, Germany
November 30, 2007 at 9:15 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

Tom Cruise almost wasn't allowed to film his latest movie in Germany because of his Scientology ties. A scant four months later, they like him so much they gave him a media award for courage--or, as it's known, a Bambi Award.

Forget Oscar, Tony and Emmy, the Bambis definitely have the coolest statue around. Eva Longoria also got to take one home for the international success of "Desperate Housewives," and Sophia Loren was honored with a lifetime achievement award, but Cruise was the one who, according to Celebitchy, gave an acceptance speech of five minutes-plus on the importance of following your dreams. Uh, can you please take your miniature golden deer and go home? Also, Katie Holmes, please return Rihanna's hair on the way out.

Katie Holmes Survived The New York City Marathon

November 5, 2007 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

Did you spot Katie Holmes among the 38,000 runners at the New York Marathon this weekend? We didn't, but armed with only a flimsy tank top and a look of determination, Mrs. Tom Cruise was able to finish the race in about five and a half hours. Holmes stayed at New York's Carlyle Hotel the night before and went out to the Staten Island start of the race with Tom and baby Suri, who joined fellow spectators along the course.

Like Katie, the two top finishers in the women's field are also moms--Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe and Ethiopia's Gete Wami who ran most of the course together before Radcliffe sprinted ahead in the last mile. Martin Lel of Kenya, who placed first in the 2003 New York City Marathon, won the men's race with an unofficial time of 2:09:05.

TomKat Adjusts To Married Life In Berlin

Where: Berlin, Germany
October 25, 2007 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

The circus has come to town for not-so-newlyweds Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who have been dividing their time between their L.A. home and the Berlin set of Tom's new movie. The show at hand is Robert Redford's film "Lions for Lambs," opening November 9, in which Cruise plays a Republican senator (no, really!) being interrogated by a reporter played by Meryl Streep about an offensive in Afghanistan. (Redford himself co-stars in the film as an inspirational college professor.)

TomKat gamely walked the red carpet and he told reporters how he's looking forward to flying planes and racing cars with pal David Beckham, who recently ended his first season with the L.A. Galaxy.

Hard to believe the couple no one said would make it has already been legally attached for a year. In other news, your grandma wants to know when you're going to move back home and find a nice young man.

Katie Holmes and Posh Will Always Have Paris

Where: Paris, France
January 25, 2007 at 9:05 AM | by sedona | 0 Comments

Hollywood's biggest A-list wives are making the scene this week in Paris. Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham, suddenly BFF, have decided to pop up for all the fashion shows in the City of Lights.

The two touched down on Monday, sans hubbies and kids (obviously not great accessories for the shows...), and have been cavorting around town, including dinner at Le Voltaire, a cozy French bistro on Quai Voltaire, replete with creamy soups and fluffy omelettes.

No official word as to where their slumber party is happening each night, although we suggest the Ritz, where they can snag the two-story Elton John Prestige Suite, all the better for pillow-fighting and prank calls.
