What's in Your Carry-on, Julia Buckley?

December 20, 2011 at 6:13 PM | by | Comments (0)

Travel voyeurs, every last one of us! It's time for a new series wherein you show off what you're working with. That is, what necessities make it into your carry-on bag. Want to be featured? It's crazy simple. Shoot us an email with a nice big photo of your bag contents and a little bit about why they have pride of place in your carry-on. And of course include your Twitter handle if you so desire.

Next up in the series after peeking into the bags of illustrious travelers, we've got yet another: Julia Buckley, Deputy Editor of the new UK version of crazy-popular luxury hotel flash sale site Jetsetter.

First things first. I’m unlike most pro travelers because I travel heavy (hair straighteners! Asthma inhalers! Maxidress in case of impromptu black tie event!) so I virtually always check a bag, if not two. I realize this is anathema to most of the other people who’ve contributed their own bag contents this series, but if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have things like lamps from Mormon thrift stores, Vegas slot machine signs, lifesize cut-outs of Barack Obama and 1950s milk bottles in my living room.

Anyways, that means my carry-on is more or less limited to the things I need for the flight, plus thievable equipment. I’m swapping Christmas in London for Vegas and New Mexico in three days time, and this is what I’ll be taking:

Jetsetter.com Wants to Sleep With You, But In a Big Fancy House This Time

September 12, 2011 at 1:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

Pardon us for uttering two very dirty words: vacation rentals. Ew, right? Renting someone else's house is like, for old people and big families and stuff, not for cool people. Or so that's what we thought up until this week, because lovely little Jetsetter.com has gone and launched Jetsetter Homes, with villas and condos and beach bungalows (oh my!) to add to the variety of hotels regular Jetsetter already offers.

Yes, they'll be on limited sale. Yes, you can score a first booking credit of $500 if you book for at least five nights before the end of October. It's standard Jetsetter stuff, just taken to another level.

It maybe seems like there's nothing Jetsetter can't do, what with their grabbing the first discounted rooms at the Armani Hotel Dubai, offering the occasional private jet deal and even planning your trip for you if you're into that sort of thing. They still haven't quite gotten their grip around First Class seats on regular airlines, but that's something we're willing to wait for.

JetSetter's Luxury Travel Sample Sales Partner Up with Jetblue

May 13, 2010 at 12:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

Have you joined JetSetter yet? We've been pretty addicted to the private luxury travel sample sale site ever since it launched last September, and although there are not many imitators, JetSetter is the only one beginning airline partnerships. We thought this could happen.

Thankfully, JetSetter is looking to bring in reasonably priced airfare to get you to their discounted five-star resort destinations, and the first airline to hit with them is good ol' Jetblue.

Discover where they're discounting, after the jump!

Gilt Groupe's Travel Sample Sales Focus on NYC with Launch of 'Gilt City'

April 28, 2010 at 12:05 PM | by | Comment (1)

Chain up your credit cards, because Gilt Groupe—the members-only luxury sample sale site that offers deals on everything from Alexander McQueen dresses to vacations in the Maldives—is getting bigger. Please welcome Gilt City into the fold, their Groupon-like site for purchasing dining deals and experiences for a fraction of their price. Currently it's only focused on New York City, but as more people find out about it and sell out deals like this week's dinner for two at Rouge Tomate, we expect the cities will expand.

We've talked about Gilt and their travel sample sale site Jetsetter.com a fair bit here at Jaunted, and there's a good reason: they've created a whole new way to browse and shop for deals. It's a completely curated system that doesn't inundate you with too much choice and too little information. Several sales per week whip buyers into a frenzy and similarly educate about the hotels or designer fashion labels. We like it.

And now that Jetsetter has a direct competitor in the newly-launched Vacationist.com, Gilt is upping the ante with Gilt City.

Will We See First Class Airfare On Sale At Jetsetter.com In The Future?

December 2, 2009 at 9:29 AM | by | Comments (0)

Have you come around to travel sample sales yet? If you've checked out the newish site Jetsetter.com, or even better yet, scored a luxury hotel stay from it, then you're in danger of becoming addicted to the newest way to purchase travel online.

Since they launched in Beta at the end of September, we've kept a daily eye to their members-only (join here) "sample sales" of five-star hotel rooms and suites from around the world, not to mention the occasional cruise. For us, the turning point—which makes us think them a burgeoning success story like their parent site, Gilt.com—is when they featured rooms at Paris' storied Hôtel de Crillon for hundreds off the rack rate.

So last night, at their official launch party in the penthouse of New York City's Hotel on Rivington, we set out to see just how well they are doing, and what juicy plans they're forming for the future...

'Jetsetter' Launches, Introduces Travel World To Trip Sample Sales

September 30, 2009 at 5:57 PM | by | Comment (1)

We warned you they were coming: vacation sample sales from the luxury discount shopping site Gilt.com. The site launched today, along with their new iPhone app, and they're beginning their life pretty strong, offering "discounted" rates on hotel rooms and cruises from top names like Seabourn Yachts and Peninsula Hotels.

So are you getting a deal? First, the "sample sales" are tremendously limited in time, so you better know that when you're headed to New York in order to book a deal at The Standard New York, prices starting at $225. Now we've definitely stayed there for less, so you have to understand that these sale prices are off the rack rate, which is pretty easy to get around in the first place if you search all the usual travel booking sites.

Even "private" islands get the Jetsetter treatment, after the jump.

Are Vacation Sample Sales In Our Future? Gilt.com Hints At New Site

July 24, 2009 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (4)

Update 08/11: Racked.com reports that the new site is called "Jetsetter" and is accepting pre-launch sign-ups here.

Could we be on the verge of purchasing travel in an entirely new way? If the founders of the uber-successful upscale sample sale website Gilt Groupe have anything to say about it, choosing and purchasing your vacation will become an adrenaline-fueled, timed transaction that mimics the way their fashion site works now.

We just happened to be at last night's Racked.com panel discussion on the future of retail, where Alexandra Wilkis Wilson of Gilt divulged their plans to move beyond selling discounted designer clothing overstock and into the world of selling hotel rooms, vacation home rentals, and trip packages. They will be luxe, of course, and "ski chalets" were especially named.
