Onboard the Singapore Airlines A380: The Grand Tour

January 19, 2012 at 3:38 PM | by | Comments (5)

On Monday, January 16, the massive Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 took off on its inaugural flight for the epic route JFK - FRA - SIN. This is flight number SQ 25, and we'll be sharing tons of details and photos from it for the next several days.

The Jaunted Singapore A380 Series:

1. The Grand Tour
2. The Singapore Girl
3. Eating (and drinking) all the way to Singapore
4. Everything you ever wanted to know about Business Class
5. Design details

We're going to be totally straight with you; jetting off into the sky onboard an Airbus A380 makes our eyes well up a bit. No, it's not quite tears, but it is being overwhelmed by the thoughts surrounding what exactly is happening right then. It's the fact that one can be cozy in an engineering masterpiece, a double-decker airplane, which can lift off from the ground as gracefully as any tiny aircraft and then manage to fly to places it once took weeks of travel to reach by uncomfortable boat.

On this route, the famous SQ 25 running New York-JFK to Frankfurt to Singapore, Singapore Airlines has now traded the 747 for this fresh A380, an upgrade on every level and totally deserved by passengers who spend over 20 hours traveling on it. Just before zipping away on this first run, we quickly snooped around the plane, peeking into all the leather-lined nooks and meticulously clean crannies to discover just why the Singapore A380s have been causing a hubbub since debuting in 2007.

How to Follow Us on Singapore Airlines' First A380 Flight from New York-JFK

January 16, 2012 at 5:59 PM | by | Comments (0)

Our first glimpse of the A380 at JFK, hiding behind the Aer Lingus jet

We type this from the bowels of the Oasis Lounge at New York-JFK Terminal 4, where the WiFi is achingly slow and our fingers jitter from a combo of excitement and the cold air leaking in.

Tonight marks the first scheduled departure of a Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 from JFK, and we'll be onboard...on flight SQ 25 all the way from New York to Frankfurt International, and on to Singapore-Changi International.

Although we'll be flying above your head for the next 22-ish hours, the fun doesn't have to stop. Quite the contrary! Here's how to follow along for all our hot and bothered Singapore A380 excitement:

From Central Park to Jurassic Park: JetBlue Flies from NYC to Liberia, Costa Rica

November 21, 2011 at 10:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

On the ground at LIR. Yep, that's actually the name of the plane.

So you want to go to somewhere warm this winter but you're not sure where? Get out a map right now and put your finger on the city of Liberia, Costa Rica because it just happens to be JetBlue's newest route and also is on special at $119 each way if you book before December 1 and travel before February 16, 2012. Not bad...not bad at all.

To understand why this town near the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is so hot, we tagged along on the inaugural flight last week. As usual, JetBlue likes to make a big deal out of their new routes, and so the whole flight was one big party; passengers heading down for birthdays, bachelorette parties or just for a relaxing weekend were treated to breakfast and cupcakes at the gate at JFK, complimentary Costa Rican Imperial beer onboard, in-flight trivia with entire vacation packages as prizes, and—perhaps the best perk of flying on an inaugural—plenty of space to stretch out.

Live from T5: JetBlue Launches Direct Flights to Liberia, Costa Rica

November 17, 2011 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Good morning from New York's JFK Airport! It's not the prettiest day here—46 degrees and gloomy/rainy as it is—but we'll soon be trading it for sun and 76 degrees down south...way down south. You see, today JetBlue celebrates the inaugural direct flight to their 70th destination: Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Costa Rica, and we're hitching a ride.

Why Liberia, Costa Rica? Why the heck not?! JetBlue already serves the country's capital, San Jose, via direct flights from Orlando, but Liberia is closer to the surfing, tubing, beaches and volcanoes of the Pacific coast. Flying into Liberia instead of San Jose means cutting out a 4-5 hour drive to reach these, not to mention that JetBlue will have the only flights from New York-JFK to here. Oh, and today those flights are on sale for $119 each way.

One more thing: Liberia's Airport is having a celebration of its own with the opening of a brand spanking new terminal.

Inside the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Factory Line

September 29, 2011 at 5:06 PM | by | Comments (0)

It is the domain of the chosen: The Boeing 787 Dreamliner factory floor in Everett, WA. The many, many workers underneath this roof are among the brightest and most dedicated, their desks spotless and the building quiet on a Sunday. As one of the small number of people who are invited to visit all the way down to the factory floor, we were honored to get right up close to tomorrow's crop of Dreamliner, still either being put together from pieces at one end, to being shined up on the other.

So, You Want To Buy A Boeing 787 Dreamliner?

September 28, 2011 at 3:59 PM | by | Comments (0)

So, you wan to buy a Boeing 787 Dreamliner? Our first question is: do you have between $190 million and $220 million dollars? Our second question: do you have somewhere to park it?

If you've answered to both questions above, then it's high time you paid a visit to Boeing's Dreamliner Gallery, a 787 shopping mall of sorts, where airline customers come to pick out all the goodies they want inside—from seats to bun warmers. It's a nice building all its own, and pretty much a playground for anyone who enjoys airplanes.

There's an entire room just for economy, business class and first class seat options, and a wall of TVs for in-flight entertainment choice. Lavatories galore, crew galleys empty of their ovens, and a another wall just for showcasing the variety of ovens and coffee makers that may be installed.

September 27, 2011 at 4:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's been a long and different road for all parties involved in the 787, and it's crazy to step inside and walk the aisles, sit in the seats, poke the seatback TV screens, and think all the sweat that went into this moment.

We won't bother with the colorful adjectives as the photos speak for themselves. And now, the interior of ANA's Boeing 787 Dreamliner:

Our First Photos of ANA's New Boeing 787 Dreamliner

September 26, 2011 at 4:25 PM | by | Comment (1)

Today is First Delivery Day in Everett, WA. It's almost like a mini holiday, considering how many people, how many years, how many innovations make up the history of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Now that the "key" has officially been handed over, with pomp and circumstance, to ANA's President and CEO Shinichiro Ito, it's time to delve into the guts of this fresh bird.

All this week we'll be taking you inside the places Boeing took us inside, even including the 787 factory floor. To begin the series, we can think of nothing more appetite-whetting than drooling over the exterior of ANA's 787, tail number JA802A, parked out back behind the Boeing factory in a line of shiny, freshly finished planes:

Jaunted Reporting Live: How to Follow Our Adventures During the Boeing 787 First Delivery

September 23, 2011 at 6:43 PM | by | Comments (2)

Have you heard enough about Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner? Hopefully not, because the fancy schmancy new airplane hasn't even been delivered to its first airline yet. That is, until this upcoming Monday it hasn't.

That's right—Monday marks the official delivery of the 787 to All Nippon Airways, an international airline based in Japan and an airline champing at the bit with excitement over the occasion. They'll get the keys to the bird, itself sporting some pretty flashy new livery—check out a rendering of that here. Needless to say, this whole event is a huge deal for travel, aviation, business, technology and the good ol' US of A, and we'll be there for it all.

Landing in Seattle bright and early Sunday morning (after some 20-ish hours of flying from Southeast Asia), we'll be sharing our experiences at Boeing facilities, on the tarmac and in the briefing rooms as much as humanly (and technically) possible. Here's how to follow along for all our hot and bothered 787 excitement:

Last Night in Chicago, with a 'Virgin Smackdown' and Richard Branson...

May 26, 2011 at 12:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

While Chicago did what it does best last night (have crazy weather), Virgin America played to their own strengths for the LAX and SFO flight party (catch our liveblog from in the air here). Aside from flying around the country, what else is VX good at? Oh...just throwing parties, having hot flight attendants parade around, and keeping everyone quite well lubricated (with Virgin Wines, no less).

The shindig went down on the roof of the theWit Hotel, where everyone from The Office's Creed Bratton to Entourage's Adrian Grenier to Tim Meadows swilled cocktails like the "Virgin Smackdown" (La Marca Prosecco and a splash of Chambord) and noshed on pizzas with cute names like "Pie in the Sky" (grilled chicken, arugula pesto, prosciutto, fig jam and parmesan).
