Instagram Photos Show How Karl Lagerfeld's Entourage (and Cat) Travel on Private Jets

May 6, 2013 at 6:22 PM | by | Comments (0)

In today's awesome-stuff-found-on-the-internet, we have behind-the-scenes Instagrams of fashion designer/luminary/man-about-the-world Karl Lagerfeld. Don't sigh just yet, for these aren't your run of the mill backstage shots; they're candids of Karl's travels by private jet, as photographed by Sebastien Jondeau.

Today they've flown from Prague to Singapore. That's no small puddle jump, and so their flight prep and onboard meal (sashimi!) come under Instagram focus.

Jondeau, a bodyguard of sorts, acts as Karl's shadow as he travels around the world taking care of business. In his spare time—taking clues from his other Instagram photos—Sebastian enjoys dirt biking, cycling, skiing, and meeting cats.

North Korea Shuts Down 3G Internet Access for Tourists, but the Instagrams Remain

March 27, 2013 at 11:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

After little less than a month of 3G internet access for foreigners visiting North Korea, Wired UK reports that the signal has been shut down as the hermit kingdom once again retreats into its usual campaign of warmongering.

Still, for that brief period, a few journalists were able to post tweets and Instagrams live from within the borders and, ever so briefly, skyrocket international cultural interest in a country that's usually only making headlines for their politics. Perhaps the 3G access was cut because of this, these images of a "softer side" of North Korea that's contrary to the propaganda officially proliferated by Pyongyang? We can only wonder as, of course, the last thing we can expect is clarification of any actions taken by North Korea.

If you missed the stream of social media during the brief 3G period, it thankfully all lives on in the internet. Here's where to find it:

17 Travel Cats Sitting in Suitcases

March 11, 2013 at 10:42 AM | by | Comments (0)

Photo

As regular readers of Jaunted know, every Wednesday we take some time out to feature a Travel Cat, defined as a cat (usually a stray) who has found for himself somewhere awesome to live in this world. Maybe that's in Istanbul's Hagia Sophia or on St. Maarten's Maho Beach, these kitties sure have the life.

Submissions for Travel Cat come to us via Twitter, email and--most importantly--Instagram, where we started the #TravelCat hashtag. Through this hashtag, Instagrammers share photos of cats they've spotted around the world, but there's also a lot right inside their own homes, apparently trying to go on vacation as well. We've gathered up all of these "armchair Travel Cats" in Buzzfeed-y style and, without further ado, here they are:

Where: Kenya
February 11, 2013 at 12:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

Three quick questions for you: are you on Instagram? Do you like drinking tea? How about an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Kenya?

Lipton—yes, the iced tea company—is looking for one outstanding Instagrammer to head over to Africa to visit the Lipton Rainforest Alliance certified tea estates in person. Yes, kinda like how Olive Garden has a real cooking school in Italy and how Sutter Home wine is a real Napa vineyard, Lipton's teas are truly made from leaves ethically harvested in Kenya and they're pretty proud of the fact.

You have until March 2 to submit to this "Liptagram Challenge," and there will be weekly prizes for photos, but it's that Grand Prize of the Kenya trip you should set your eyes on—how often does a Kenya trip come up as a prize!?

It's the video for the song "Paradise" by Wild Nothing and directed by Matt Amato. The YouTube description is simple: "A story of plane travel and waterfalls starring Michelle Williams," but we can't help to try and figure out the airports and airline traveled by Ms. Williams.

What the Museums Authority wants to see from you is not a watercolor, however, but one great Instagram.

Two Airports Make the Top Ten Most Instagrammed Spots in the World

December 28, 2012 at 2:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

Earlier this year, photo-sharing app Instagram revealed their very first photo, taken by founder Kevin Systrom while he was traveling in Mexico.

Well, travel takes the top spot yet again as Instagram listed their most Instagrammed locations for the entire year. Posted on their blog, the list shocks by putting an airport, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International, at number 1, and Times Square at a lowly number 4. There are actually two airports that make the cut, for Los Angeles International ranked sixth, higher even than the Eiffel Tower.

Check out the full top then on the Instagram blog.

Inside Virgin Atlantic's Totally Redesigned Upper Class Clubhouse at Newark Airport

Where: Newark-Liberty International [map], Newark, NJ, United States
December 7, 2012 at 12:37 PM | by | Comments (0)

"Oh man, ugh whatever." - the typical feeling upon discovering your flight is departing from Newark-Liberty International Airport

It's true. Newark isn't exactly the most convenient airport, nor will it be winning any airport beauty pageants, but airlines have ways of turning your frown upside-down real quick. A grand example is the newly revamped, just-debuted-this-week Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Clubhouse.

At 5,000 square feet, it's half the size of their also recently reopened JFK Clubhouse, but that's partly due to the fact this one doesn't have the Cowshed Spa. Going for a downtown feel (JFK's aims for uptown style), it instead focuses around the architectural central bar (most popular cocktail? Mojito!) and chill-out lounge nooks (see the "Passion Pit" in our gallery below).

Instagram Your Way to Having a Photo on Display at Virgin Atlantic's Newest Clubhouse

November 13, 2012 at 4:44 PM | by | Comments (0)

Have you ever been inside a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse? They're awesome, right? Totally. And don't the passengers know it. In fact, snapping photos inside the chic Clubhouses and uploading them to Instagram is such a common occurrence that Virgin Atlantic has decided to embrace it with an Instagram contest all their own.

Next month Virgin will unveil a renovated Clubhouse at Newark-Liberty International. It'll have the usual design flair (with a downtown theme), a dining area, a sleek bar and plenty of chill-out space. OH—and an Instagram art gallery, which is where your images come into play.

Upload photos to Instagram or Twitter showing you in a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, any of the Clubhouses. Do so before November 28, include the hashtag "#howiclubhouse," and they'll be considered for a feature in the Newark gallery.

Too Cool: Check Out Our Instagram Profile

November 6, 2012 at 6:16 PM | by | Comments (0)

Instagram. Let's talk about it (again). Yes, we're still in love with it and yes, we're still in love with all of you who share your travel photos and allow us to see and comment on them, sharing tips and #travelcats.

This week, Instagram has made all the sharing easier than ever with the release of a "profile page" for each user. Don't freak out if yours isn't live yet—everyone will get one eventually. Ours is up and running, and we'd like you to check it out, even if you're not an Instagram user. Why? Because, for the first time, non-users of Instagram can easily scroll through images on non-private accounts.

As always, all of our Instagram shots are from our very own travels, from our smartphones, usually on-the-spot as we move about the world. For example, while making it back to the US after Hurricane Sandy, we shared with you this beast we met at JFK and the Zeppelin Hangar which you'll soon see more of in an upcoming story. So really, the images can also be spoilers. Shhh.

Free Airport WiFi Goes Down Under Thanks to Qantas

Where: Australia
November 2, 2012 at 12:18 PM | by | Comments (0)

Qantas is rolling out a new technology initiative for all of its passengers. It's like music to our ears and comes in the form of free WiFi. This may not sound like news as we have told you before that the airline has been trialing in-flight WiFi, but this time the web-surfing can be done on the ground.

The Red Roo is outfitting its major airports with complimentary wifi for passengers just passing through the terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. The general airport access is in addition to the lightning fast wireless internet that frequent flyers love in each of its lounges.
