There's a Cat in This Cockpit

July 9, 2014 at 8:11 PM | by | Comments (0)

Very important cat news! Venus, the two-tone face cat and social media darling flew to the Big Apple for some TV appearances this week, including a cute cameo on Good Morning America.

Venus, who was adopted off a dairy farm where she was living as a feral stray, turned 5 this year. Her owner uses Venus' exposure on social media to promote the adoption of pets who need good homes. We became aware of her while idly browsing Instagram's #catsofinstagram hashtag one day over a year ago, and have followed this chimera cutie's adventures since.

Venus' travels aren't frequent, but she did post the photo above of her and her owner enjoying a photo op in the cockpit of a Delta plane today.

Travel Contest Alert: Selfies are Good for Something, Like Winning a Trip to Croatia

Where: Croatia
June 18, 2014 at 8:42 AM | by | Comments (0)

Love them or hate them selfies are here to stay, so go ahead and use them to your advantage—like to score a free trip over to Croatia.

The country’s tourism board is taking advantage of our social media narcissism, and they’re rewarding one lucky person with a trip to the country. The rules seem pretty simple; basically you need to take and share a selfie using the hashtags #lovecroatia or #sharecroatia. After that a free trip might just be yours, as they’re giving away round-trip airfare and a 7-night stay along the country’s picturesque coast.

Mark Your iCal for NYC's 'Manhattanhenge' Phenomenon

May 23, 2014 at 4:18 PM | by | Comments (0)

There are two times every year when one can take the the most spectacular photos of the Manhattan skyline, dramatic and backlit. It's called Manhattanhenge, a portmanteau made from the combination of Manhattan + Stonehenge, the latter also a place famous for solstice action. The first of those times occurs next week, over a span of three evenings, May 28-30. Clear out those memory cards and charge up your camera!

During Manhattanhenge, the setting sun perfectly lines up with the grid of the city's east-west streets, creating a canyon of searing lights down every midtown street. Photographers who wish to capture this phenomenon typically stake out the west end of of wide 42nd Street, and even head over the East River to Long Island City to capture the whole of the skyline.

The Instagram Travel Hashtag That's Worrying the Airlines

May 6, 2014 at 11:19 AM | by | Comments (0)

We've waxed enthusiastic about Instagram for what seems like forever, including trends like carpet designs and even celeb travel selfies, but a new trending hashtag (with over 320,000 images!) has us shaking our heads.

This hashtag—#crewlife—documents the more casual aspects of what it's like to be part of an airline's crew. All these flight attendant selfies on social media means cabin crew are snapping while in uniform. On planes. Quite possibly while working.

NASA Wants to Know Where Exactly You Stand on 'Selfie Day'

April 21, 2014 at 7:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

The "Selfie" has been quite the topic of both derision and obsession so far this year, but tomorrow should be the true test of its popularity. April 22 is typically Earth Day, and that it'll be again this year; NASA has their own plans, however, and they need you.

Take a photo of yourself showcasing the nature of wherever you are, and upload it to social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+, Flickr) with the hashtag #GlobalSelfie to join in—you guessed it—Global Selfie Day.

April 17, 2014 at 6:21 PM | by | Comments (0)

Let's be real. Nothing is more embarrassing than a selfie stick, but you can't just travel around with a personal photographer in tow. Or can you?

Flytographer.com finally has a solution for travelers who are struggling for selfies, consistently disappointed with vacation photos, or feel like they're not living in the moment with an eye to a viewfinder. That solution is to book a local vacation photographer who will tag along to craft an informal photo shoot in your destination.

'The Lego Pilot' is the Greatest Thing on Social Media Right Now

April 11, 2014 at 4:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

Lindbergh. Earhart. Yeager.

Let's face it—aviators are the epitome of cool. Heck, even fictitious pilots like Top Gun's Maverick get all the girls, so frankly we're shocked it's taken so long for the internet generation to devise a character as brilliant as The Lego Pilot.

Jetting around the world in his perfectly pressed uniform, The Lego Pilot spends days sharing his "office views" and favorite layover locations with fans on social media. Though his body may be made of plastic building blocks, his personality is very much alive on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. He's essentially a fully conceptualized and storified version of Lufthansa's "Pilot Diary" Instagram series from August 2013, which we heralded as "a revelation for airline social media."

Recent travels have transported The Lego Pilot to London, Hong Kong, Spain's Costa del Sol, Dubai, and Marrakech...and that's only since the beginning of March when the accounts initiated.

We won't spoil all the fun for you (follow him!), but below are a few of our favorite The Lego Pilot moments. Enjoy!

Travel Contest Alert: Be One of the First Inside the Reopened Washington Monument

April 9, 2014 at 1:06 PM | by | Comments (0)

You'd think, with Instagram celebrating its fourth birthday this year, that the limits of intriguing new accounts would be stretched. Alas, we still find new and interesting people to follow, and one such account is @usinterior. It's actually the official account of the US Department of the Interior.

They've been active on the app for nearly two years, but only now are they taking the step to get interactive, announcing a contest to join in their first Insta-Meet for the reopening of the Washington Monument on May 12. You see, the monument closed after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the DC area in 2011. This caused cracks near the top of the monument, closing it indefinitely...or at least until May 12.

The opportunity to be among the first back into the national landmark sounds awesome, but there is a major catch:

Elizabeth Banks and Sofia Vergara Will Not Be Caught Snoozing on a Plane

April 7, 2014 at 11:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

This morning, a cryptic tweet by Elizabeth Banks (Hunger Games, 30 Rock, Modern Family) highlighted what is definitely a #celebtravelproblem:

A few weeks ago, Banks' Modern Family co-star faced a similar situation while napping on set. Sofia Vergara took pains to prevent any sleeping photos of her from leaking, by placing a napkin over her face. The concept only half-worked, as her co-stars turned it into an Instagram opportunity (above) which then ended up as a DailyMail article, but at least her snoozing face literally stayed out of the picture.

Awesome Idea: What If Nike Collaborated with Airlines for a Sneaker Collection?

April 3, 2014 at 11:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

Back in late 2012, we highlighted our favorite Instagram hashtag of-the-moment: #kicksonaplane.

The hashtag was first started by Marcus Troy, an "influencer" and brand strategist who uploaded a photo of his Converse on Air Canada Flight 7505 to Toronto City Airport one year ago. From there, he gave it its own website, but it's the hashtag which continues to organically grow within Instagram. Now it numbers over 3,000 images.

Inspired by the hashtag, London-based art director Marco Lemcke used his talents to answer the question, "What would a collaboration between Nike and some top airlines look like?" Here's a few of the incredible results:

Pure New Zealand Has Entered the World of Pure Instagram

March 21, 2014 at 11:50 AM | by | Comments (0)

We continually said it over and over again, that tourism and travel is constantly killing it on Instagram, and that Australia reigns supreme.

This week we welcome a new addition to the awesome Instagramers with Pure New Zealand, the folks behind promoting the natural beauty of the island nation in the South Pacific. Started only this month, they've been pretty active already with a myriad of photos, ranging from city-scapes to nature shots with a gentle sprinkling of requisite Hobbit snaps.
