Thanks to @jdingell for snapping this photo of a snowy descent at @dulles_airport

A photo posted by British Airways (@british_airways) on

Are you good at Instagram?

Okay, don't answer that. Whether you have 10 followers or 10.2k, British Airways is interested and could potentially take you for a trip to photograph their next advertisement.

The contest is a partnership between British Airways, TimeOut, and The Telegraph to send 10 Instagrammers to 10 of the destinations British Airways serves from London-Gatwick Airport for a 3-day stay (with a per diem for meals!) and a lesson with a professional photographer.

'The Most Beautiful Room in Canada' Lifts Ban on Tourist Snapshots

Where: Ottawa, Canada
January 30, 2015 at 6:14 PM | by | Comments (0)

You've just got to see the Library of Parliament, located within the Parliament buildings in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Ranked as one of the "7 Wonder of Canada," but more famously recognized as the "most beautiful room in Canada," the library is the only remaining piece of the original 1876 Parliament building, surviving the destructive 1916 fire thanks to iron fire doors. Inside are 1 million documents and 11 miles of books and, up until very recently, a "no cameras" zone.

Visitors to the Library fall into one of two groups: members of Parliament and their staff, or members of there public making the official (and free!) Parliament tour. The latter would find themselves disappointed by a major rule: photography was strictly prohibited if the room had anyone in it, either staff or politician. Occasionally a weekend tour would get lucky and find an empty library, but viewing the room with all its lights on, a librarian stationed, and in active use brings out the spirit of the space.

People are Freaking Out Over the Final Departure of Portland's Airport Carpet

January 9, 2015 at 11:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

Fun fact: There are over 26,000 Instagams tagged #PDXcarpet.

Not-so-fun fact: The cult-favorite carpet inspiring such photo documentation is making its final departure this month, as Portland International Airport in Oregon lays down a fresh rug with an updated design.

The APEX blog discovered that the new look, due to be installed mid-January, doesn't stray far from the original scheme of the beloved original design. That original, installed in the 1980s, was an "abstract representation of the airport’s runways and aircraft"; the newer design expands upon this, to evoke “organic and man-made shapes found within the surrounding areas of PDX, including airplane wings, runways, leaves, trails, and waterways.”

So what will happen to the 13 acres of graphic funkiness that is the famous PDX carpet? The NY Times hints that actual squares of the rug will be given away:

Paris Hilton's Instagram Praise of Emirates First Class Worth Millions

December 12, 2014 at 12:09 PM | by | Comment (1)

Taking off on my favorite @Emirates Airlines ✈️Next stop Dubai! ❤️

Una foto publicada por Paris Hilton (@parishilton) el

3.5 million people looked at photos of Emirates First Class this week and it's all thanks to Paris Hilton.

Jetting through Miami, Dubai, India, and Los Angeles to play DJ gigs and make appearances in support of her eponymous fashion and fragrance lines this week, Hilton alleviated her in-flight boredom by planning her next photo op. Five times over the course of these travels she managed to post Instagram photos of herself enjoying the comfort of the premium class, and she's quickly becoming a champion for the airline, whether official or not.

Paris has made a habit of documenting her travels via Instagram, posing in her First Class seats when she flies commercial or opting for a full vogue next to the plane when flying private.

These images are immediately shared with her legion of followers, and average over 40,000 "likes" each. Her followers may not be subscribers of Robb Report, but they are young and impressionable, and images of aspirational travel are both memorable and an easy "like."

Considering a single tweet of hers praising the airline in 2009 (to only ~200,000 followers at the time) was valued at $1.5 million five years ago, we shudder to think of a possible valuation for her recent Instagrams, of which there have been five in one week (one a video tour of the First Class cabin).

Free Stuff Alert! Win Airfare and More with Alaska Airlines' Friday Scavenger Hunt

October 9, 2014 at 8:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

Have plans for tomorrow? If not, try to make your way out to Seattle, as Alaska Airlines is hosting a scavenger hunt in and around the city. We would probably play along just for some airline swag or a t-shirt, but what they’re handing out to the winner is even better. To celebrate their order of a whole bunch of brand new Boeing 737-900ERs they are offering up a chance to drive one—at least in the simulator.

The airline will be revealing clues on both Instagram and Twitter beginning at 6am—local time—this Friday. Your job will be to use the hints to find spots in and around Seattle, and if you’re the first to arrive at each location you might just score some time in the Boeing 737 flight simulator.

These are the Best Travel Hyperlapses...Thus Far

September 16, 2014 at 5:06 PM | by | Comment (1)

As you can probably tell from a quick scroll of your Instagram stream, the world is currently on speed. Time-lapse video with motion stabilization has been adapted for ultimate ease of use thanks to Instagram's new Hyperlapse app, and now viewing some videos should be accompanied by a photosensitive epilepsy warning.

Already the airlines are onboard with the technology; JetBlue was Hyperlapsing for their Instagram account as soon as the day after launch. Of course the Pro-Grammers (Professional + Instagrammers) are on it, and turning their particular aesthetics into sped-up mobile film masterpieces.

Here are a few of our favorites, which demonstrate the different ways Hyperlapse can illustrate a journey:

What's in Barbie's London Fashion Week Carry-On Bag?

September 11, 2014 at 1:55 PM | by | Comments (0)

It wasn't all that long ago we established that the plastic fashion doll Barbie does, in fact, have a passport. This month she's putting it to good use, hopping from Fashion Week to Fashion Week and posting her adventures to a @barbiestyle Instagram account.

In and amongst the faux-streetstyle shots of Barbie and her appearances in front rows, she's organizing her upcoming travel. Next: the start of London Fashion Week, for which she's flying British Airways with a carry-on expertly packed.

Just as any fashion person cannot resist a good what's-in-my-stylish-luggage Instagram snap, Barbie was sure to post her carry-on contents:

Hashtags Everywhere! Denmark's Tourist Sites are Ready for Your Selfie

September 10, 2014 at 11:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

Denmark sees its fair share of tourists throughout the year, and enjoys its position a quick train or plane ride away from other Northern European capitals. Alas, the goal is always to attract more tourists, and now the country’s tourism board has figured a novel way to do so through social media. It’s one part marketing and one part tourism, as they aid in promoting the country while also appealing to those already there.

The campaign involves posting street signs with suggested hashtags at Denmark's "most shareable places."

The TSA Has Your iPhone

August 29, 2014 at 12:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

According to Consumer Reports, 2013 saw some 4.5 million smartphones reported lost or stolen. 2014's numbers are expected to be even higher, especially with the debut of a new iPhone this autumn.

If you've long thought your phone had gone to the great charging cable in the sky, consider that perhaps it's just at the bottom of a pile of crusty lost-and-found electronics at an airport somewhere. The Transportation Safety Administration yesterday posted an Instagram showing a tiny sample of the forgotten gadgets they end up tossing into a box at LAX alone, and it's pretty alarming.

The First Airline to Hyperlapse is...

August 28, 2014 at 3:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Two days is about the correct amount of time before big brands begin experimenting with new social media apps. This has again proved true for Hyperlapse from Instagram, as travel companies race to see how sped-up video can enrich their online presence.

Technically the first airline to dabble in Hyperlapse was Qantas, as they re-grammed a Hyperlapse from one of their travelers, who captured Qantas airplane movements from a lounge at Sydney International Airport before his own flight.

But the first airline to create their own Hyperlapse video using the new app was...
