For Those Who Don't Bose, There's Always the Duty Free Headphones

February 3, 2012 at 2:17 PM | by | Comment (1)

Whatever class you're in, however spiffy you look, airline headphones suck. But if, like us, you're one of those people who class Bose as too expensive/ostentatious, we have a solution for you.

Recently, flying London-Heathrow to Vegas on British Airways, we were handed standard terrible economy headphones. We were trying to lipread Bridesmaids. It was bad. Then, after a couple of drinks and some flicking through the Duty Free catalogue, we saw these: Jivo rosewood noise reducing headphones, for £28. We were tipsy, liked the sound of rosewood, and bought them, still assuming they'd be pretty rubbish, what with them costing a fraction of Bose prices.

Retro Travel: What The Concorde Gave Passengers in 1995

January 17, 2012 at 1:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

Do you remember the glory days of The Bullet aka The Concorde? Neither do we. Well, we did fly it once back in 2000 from EWR-LHR but we have very little memory of the ride. Sigh, it's true. Everything good is wasted on the young.

But thanks to the mentally ill hoarding meticulous salvaging of our high-flying parents, we now can see what the Concorde gave out to its passengers in fall of 1995--Leather diary planners for 1996.

We've put some snapshots of the billfold/diary planner below for those of you who still get nostalgic about flying The Concorde. And while we don't have any use for a calendar from 16 years ago, you betcha we stole that silver Concorde pencil!

Got any of your own Retro Travel pieces to share with us? Please do!

Up Close with Singapore Airlines' New First Class Kiehl's Kit

January 12, 2012 at 10:05 AM | by | Comments (0)

Next week, the massive Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 will finally begin regularly scheduled flights from New York-JFK. It only makes sense, then, to have Singapore upgrade some smaller things to go along with this literally superjumbo change. Namely, they are also introducing a new amenity kit in First Class and the Suites, on SQ flights from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston.

The products—five travel-sized formulas to work against dry airplane skin—are from NYC's Kiehl's Since 1851. And no, this isn't the entire First Class amenity kit; it's just the skin care portion, as there's plenty other goodies on your seat if you're traveling in the fancy classes.

Curious what other brands airlines will have you slather on your face mid-flight? United has Murad, Delta has Korres, LAN goes with Bulgari, British Airways gives D.R. Harris & Co. in First, Cathay has Dermalogica and American has recently switched theirs from Burt's Bees to Dermalogica as well.

Sitting Up Front: The First Class Experience on American Airlines

May 14, 2010 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Depending on the type of plane that you board, you either walk right past them all, or you are forced to turn the other way and never even see them. We're talking about the first class or business class seats. The back of the plane is where why find ourselves nine times out of ten, but we can always dream about the promised land. That's why we wanted to share what we know about flying in the front of the plane, and what it takes to get there. Check out what we found:

· How Much Does It Cost?
If you’re a hotshot and heading to Los Angeles for an important meeting, then you have two different options on American Airlines. They offer both a business class and a first class seat between JFK and LAX. We checked out some fares for the first week in June, and business seats are around $2,600, while first class seats are about $5,300. You’d be leaving on flight 1 and returning on flight 2, which is just a cute little sidenote.

Despite some of our personal experiences with US Airways, the airline does in fact have some quality service options if you’re willing to shell out the additional cash. Heading out from their hub in Philadelphia to London costs around $3,800. If you would rather stick around in the lower 48, then heading from Charlotte to San Francisco costs around $1,600—which isn’t really that bad compared the options on some other airlines; however, this is still US Airways after all.

Sitting Up Front: The First Class Experience on Continental Airlines

Continental Airlines has a lot going on right now, but at the moment, things should remain somewhat stable until they merge their forces with their new pals over at United. If you want to test out the Continental seats one last time before the outside of the plane has a different name on it, now is the time to do so. Head out the first week in June from Newark to Frankfurt and you’re looking at an addition of about $4,800 to the monthly budget. If your passport is expired, the airline would be happy to whisk you from coast to coast as well. A flight from Newark to Seattle up in the front will cost $1,300.

United Airlines has a lot of its flights coming and going from the middle of the country, so we understand the need to escape to the coast; however, doing so in the front of the plane is going set you back a few bucks. During the first week of June a flight from Chicago to San Diego will cost about $1,700 in business class. United does offer a true first class option as well, and this will cost you $18,000 from Chicago to Tokyo. Things seem like a bargain in business class for only $8,000 on the same route to Asia.

A roundtrip on Delta in the front from JFK to LAX will set you back about $2,585 for the first week of June, and if you want to go international a trip from their base in Atlanta to somewhere like London it will cost $7,170. It might be worth sitting in the back so you can go more than once in a lifetime.

Designer Airline Seats: Does Your Butt Even Know the Difference?

Where: Singapore
February 4, 2010 at 11:20 AM | by | Comment (1)

The airline consistently ranked as best in the world for service, is also tops when it comes to fashion and amenities. Of course we're talking about Singapore Airlines, and we just realized that not only do they have sweet ipod hook-ups to the in-flight entertainment, but that all of their amenity kits and the first and business class bedding, pajamas and dishware are all from French luxury fashion house Givenchy.

We've spent years craving the Marc Newson-designed pajamas in Qantas first class, the Shanghai Tang togs on Cathay Pacific and the Anya Hindmarch amenity kits in British Airways first class, but Givenchy is miles above those.
