Concert Travel: Chill the Summer Away in Iceland

Where: Iceland
June 9, 2008 at 9:00 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

You might remember that Robbie Williams is particularly unpopular in Iceland, but they certainly love their own pop stars. Sure, they don't have too many, but the eccentricity of singer Björk alone makes up for that.

If you love Icelandic singers too, you might want to check out a big event on June 28, when Björk and Sigur Rós will play a free outdoor concert for anyone who happens to be in Iceland at the time.

Iceland Express will have extra-cheap flights over the week of the concert, so getting there from other parts of Europe will be easy--and relatively cheap, with return tickets from €195 ($300), all in. If nothing else, spending a summer vacation at an Icelandic pop concert is different from what you did last year.

It's Official: Iceland Socks

Where: Iceland
April 16, 2008 at 9:15 AM | by amandak | 1 Comment

We've been in love with the crazy gang at low cost carrier Iceland Express ever since they taught us how to get a date with an Icelander. But with their newest gimmick, we positively want to marry Iceland Express. Because Iceland socks.

No, that's not a typo. Hit the Iceland Socks website (produced by Iceland Express) and you'll be confronted with several pairs of socks to choose from, and the ability to make your own mini-movie set in Iceland, featuring your chosen pair of socks. Just pick a few landscapes, add subtitles and you can send your movie to your friends. Trust us, it'll be hilarious!

We're always impressed with what Iceland Express comes up with to try to lure people to the country. Sock movies... really cool, but we still haven't booked our trip to Iceland.

Iceland Express Hates Robbie Williams

February 28, 2008 at 9:20 AM | by amandak | 1 Comment

Another birthday today, this time for Iceland Express, our favorite Icelandic airline. It's just turned five, and the carrier's got a special offer to entice people to Iceland to celebrate.

If you live in or are traveling through London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Barcelona or Alicante, you can get tickets to Reykjavik for just £53 (around $100). At Iceland Express, you can even book the kind of seat you want--window or aisle, for example--at the same time as you book your ticket.

We've been big fans of this airline ever since the How Do You Like Iceland? blog started giving tips on getting an Icelandic boyfriend. Right now they have a post about being an official Friend of Iceland, an honor so far bestowed upon Harrison Ford, Ryan Philippe and Damon Albarn.

What caught our attention is the fact that Robbie Williams is an Enemy of Iceland, after a scandalous visit when his bodyguards shoved Icelandic journalists and Robbie himself walked out of his own show after twenty minutes because a water bottle had landed on stage. So if you make it to Iceland on the cheap, don't expect to see Robbie there.

Iceland on the Cheap and SkyEurope Celebrates

December 11, 2007 at 9:00 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

If you've been daydreaming about a spontaneous (and cheap) trans-European trip then maybe we'll spark an idea with some of the latest deals from our favorite European low cost carriers. Take Iceland Express, for example. There are a hundred reasons to visit Iceland, half of which you can find out our favorite airline blog, How Do You Like Iceland?, and the 101st reason is they have a Christmas special on London to Iceland flights, starting at £60 ($122). Reason 102: They say New Year's Eve really goes off in Iceland.

For other European destinations, SkyEurope is offering a neat deal right now, to celebrate its best quarter of financial results ever. Book before December 16 (or sooner, as there are a limited number of tickets) and SkyEurope will charge you nothing but the taxes and charges, for travel between January 10 and March 18, 2008. Since the maximum taxes and charges add up to about $70, and some are far less, you could be flying between Western and Central Europe very cheaply indeed.

FlyNordic Flies With No Frills At All

October 5, 2007 at 9:45 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

We all know Scandinavia is an expensive place for a holiday, so it should come as no big surprise to learn that the region's biggest budget airline FlyNordic is also a little on the expensive side. You're not going to get £1 fares on FlyNordic, but you are going to get no-frills service within Sweden and to Denmark, Norway and a few other European destinations at a fairly reasonable price

FlyNordic has a complicated history of ever-shifting Finnish and Norwegian ownership, despite being largely based in Sweden. Now it's a subsidiary of Norwegian Air Shuttle (with Finnair holding 5%), and it targets both leisure travelers and business customers. In fact, businesses can buy a Business Pass good for any member of the company to use for trips within Sweden (20 flights for just $3,000) or to the rest of Scandinavia (20 flights for $3,400). At around $150 a flight, it's no Ryanair, but it does beat a regular carrier hands down.

All FlyNordic is really missing is something catchy to remember it by. After all, Finnair has its panda and Iceland Express has its blog with tips on getting an Icelandic boyfriend, so we hope FlyNordic can come up with something fun soon.

Iceland Express Impresses

September 25, 2007 at 9:30 AM | by amandak | 2 Comments

When we heard this week that little-known European low cost carrier Iceland Express had won an award for the best LCC website, we were instantly intrigued. And while cheap flights in and out of Iceland might not be a top priority on too many traveling agendas, keeping in touch with Iceland Express's website and especially their blog might get you to change your mind.

For a start, the basic Iceland Express website is so clean and refreshing looking that you basically want to book your flight immediately. Move on to the airline's blog and you'll be well and truly hooked. Posts include topics like "How to get a date with an Icelander", info on Icelandic events like the Reykjavík Gay Pride Festival and tips on where to hang out in Iceland, like in a street called Skólavörðustígur.

So far flights operate from Reykjavik to a dozen major destinations like Paris, Berlin and London; we recommend using Iceland Express to get to Skólavörðustígur before the rest of the world finds out how to pronounce it.
