Air Chase! Grand Theft Cessna Ends Safely In Missouri with One Arrest
This is why we don't leave our keys in parked planes: A Cessna stolen from a Canadian flight school last night landed safely on a Missouri back road last night after a six-hour flight over four states. Canadian citizen Adam Leon was arrested on the ground after fleeing the plane on foot.
Leon took off from Ontario's Thunder Bay Airport around 3PM and crossed into Michigan's Upper Peninsula. F-16 fighter jets met him when he crossed into Wisconsin, where his flightpath caused the evacuation of the state capitol building in Madison. Suspected to be low on fuel, the pilot, a flight student who later told state troopers he was hoping to be shot down, was able to land the plane on Missouri Highway FF around 9PM, where he was apprehended after hitching a ride to a convenience store. That's right, Midwesterners are so nice they will give you a ride even after you put the scare into Homeland Security.

Here's what the Department of Homeland Security has been up to in the last week before Barack Obama is sworn in:
It's Just A Drill To prepare for the administrative turnover commonly known as the Inauguration, outgoing DHS officials from the Bush White House and their Obama-administration replacements ran through a homeland security scenario testing response to an IED placed in the transportation system. Despite Rahm Emanuel's assurances, we'd like to think that it was like a game of Capture the Flag in which departing staff played the terrorists trying to outwit law enforcement.

Four Must-Implement Ideas for Janet Napolitano
News agencies with way more reporters in Washington, DC than we have are reporting that Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano could soon be named Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security by President-elect Barack Obama. Though he's undoubtedly not involved in the decision making process, fellow Arizonan John McCain has already voiced his support for the pick.
While the transition team still hasn't said publicly that Napolitano will be picked--and she'll need Senate confirmation before serving--we've got a few suggestions for whoever takes over DHS and by extension, its sub-agency the Transportation Security Administration.
