On and Off The Waterfront With Budd Schulberg

August 11, 2009 at 3:49 PM | by | Comments (0)

Budd Schulberg, a screenwriter and novelist who died last week at age 95, will see his work far outlive him. The Academy Award winner for the screenplay "On the Waterfront" captured the pains and pulses of ambition whether his characters were on the docks of the Atlantic or overlooking the Pacific from a beach house.

Schulberg grew up in Hollywood where his dad eventually helped run Paramount Studios in the silent era, but he's best known for showing the hardscrabble union world on the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey, based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles in the New York Sun. Schulberg met with dockworkers in shady bars and sat in on deliberations at the Waterfront Commission's courtrooms to write the screenplay, which won him an Oscar; the film also picked up Best Director, Best Actor (for Marlon Brando) and Best Picture in 1955.

Most Missed in Hoboken

November 7, 2006 at 2:47 PM | by | Comments (0)

In continuing our weekly look at the Missed Connections listings on Craigslist, we decided to check out North Jersey's subregion of New York City, otherwise known as Hoboken, where all the commuters live and suffer from (or proudly display, it depends) the dreaded Bridge and Tunnel label.

Here's where people like to meet:

PATH Station
Obviously, since this is preferred transportation for commuters from Hoboken into Manhattan. Sample missed connection:

You used my back as a support post as we travelled aboard the packed PATH train to NJ from the west village.

NYSC (New York Sports Club)
We found a listing for three types of "seeking"---m4m, w4m, m4w but if you are a girl who likes girls, this may not be the place in Hoboken to get lucky. Sample missed connection:

You were the scruffy hot guy w/ the pierced nipple and cool tats. Think you were checking me out as you stepped out of the shower but could have been imagining it

Supermarkets
Ok, so there were only two of them on the page but for you to be attracted to someone inside the Shop-Rite or the Pathmark (no relation to PATH station), it must be love. Sample missed connection:

You were buying the Malomars, told me you were starting the Atkins diet, drove away too fast in your truck

Or maybe it was just a Jersey girl with a sweet tooth on the lam.
