Can't Afford a Birkin Bag? See One Being Made at Least, During Hermès' Festival

February 16, 2011 at 11:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

Thanks to that classic episode of Sex in the City, many people know about the highly coveted and high-priced Hermès Birkin bag. But even before the days of Sarah Jessica Parker and gang flitzing about the city, the fashion set already knew that Hermès was the way to go for luxury accessories;it's one of the very, very few fashion houses still producing items the way they've always been, in the factories and by the hands of the craftsmen who've always done it. The Hermès way of crafting each item is now, however, hitting the road in an exhibition called "The Festival of Crafts."

No need to fly to Paris to see this either, as the Festival opens in Seattle on February 23, lasting for only a week before continuing on to Chicago from March 11 to March 16 and Washington D.C. from March 25 to March 30.

If you book this on your own, expect to shell out just over $700 for the one-way flight, but thankfully there are other ways to enjoy it for free...

A National Geographic Photographer Enters the World of Fashion Ads

March 18, 2010 at 5:20 PM | by | Comment (1)

What would happen if you took a celebrated National Geographic photographer and asked him to do the glossy ads and commercial for a French luxury fashion house? The answer, which you'll know if you've gone shopping for any very expensive leather bags lately, is a stunning gallery of ads that belong in an art gallery.

Hermes, famous for producing the highest quality goods for travel (if you're okay with dropping four figures or more on them), signed on Eric Valli, a NatGeo name who really fell in love with travel back when he traversed Afghanistan on horseback at age 18. Aside from the Fall/Winter magazine ads like the one above, he's now developed their short commercial for the new fragrance Voyage d'Hermès, a $90 perfume that evokes the romance of nomadic travel with a horse and a dove.
