Is Virgin America Secretly Psyching Up to Launch Hawaii Flights?
Okay, who wants to go to Hawaii? Really, the better question would be who doesn't to go to Hawaii? Even though it seems all the state can do is cry about how they need more tourists, airlines have been upping their island game all season. Heck, Hawaiian Airlines is gearing up to begin NYC-Honolulu direct service next month, while that Mokulele thing is doing some other island-hoppy stuff and now we may be able to throw Virgin America an "aloha."
The SFO-based low-cost airline is flying their birds back and forth between San Francisco and Hawaii already...but not with paying passengers. Instead, the FAA is onboard as, according to the NYCAviation discussion board, the airline's Airbus A320s undergo ETOPS trials.

How to Get Hawaii Tickets on Mokulele Airlines for a Crazy $39
It wasn’t too long ago that we heard about the revamped and relaunched Mokulele Airlines, and it looks like the airline is doing its best to stay in the news. Obviously locals and tourists heading between the different islands of Hawaii can quickly rack up some decent frequent flyer miles—despite the short distances—so the airline has decided to launch its very own loyalty program. However, their new program is focused a little bit more on discounts rather than points.
The airline is introducing flexible fares for senior citizens, and the rates start as low as just $38.80 each way. Grandmas and grandpas do need to be residents of the Aloha State, and the discount fares must be booked within 30 minutes of departure at the airport. We never would have guessed that using the airport check-in counter as a ticket counter would be an option again, but that’s exactly what the WikiWings program is all about.

Cheese, Beer, Spam and Grits Festivals Will Fill Your April Full of Indigestion
It’s officially spring, and April has been doing its thing for a few days now. That means the seasonal festivals have started to move outdoors and the warmer weather guarantees a good time no matter where you decide to spend the weekend. Of course overindulgence on one particular food is always a great way to pass the time, so here’s a few picks of where to taste and treat this month:
World Grits Festival - St. George, South Carolina
We’re just a week or so away from the World Grits Festival in St. George, South Carolina, so if you’re looking for a little slice of the South now’s the time to make your plans. They’ve been throwing this party for the last 27 years, so at this point we’re thinking that they really know what they’re doing. All kinds of arts and crafts will be on display, there’s a chance to grind your own grits, plenty of live music, and of course a grits eating contest. Things run between April 13 and April 15—check the full schedule here—and admission is totally free. Just be sure to schedule your time accordingly, as we wouldn’t want you to miss the chance to see attendees rolling around in a pool full of grits—yes, that’s a real thing.
Dairy State Cheese and Beer Festival – Kenosha, Wisconsin
Nothing is as delicious as some beer and some cheese, and thankfully there’s one festival in Wisconsin getting ready to celebrate both. The Dairy State Cheese and Beer Festival is getting ready to go on Saturday, April 21 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Tickets will set you back around $40 per person, but that will get you access to plenty of samples from the state’s best cheese producers and brewers. Local breweries will be on hand to show off their latest sudsy creations including Big Bay Brewing Company and their Long Weekend IPA. All the overindulgence goes down at the The Brat Shop, so we’re even thinking they’ll be an opportunity to partake in a sausage or too as well.

Mokulele Airlines Spreads a Little Aloha with a Fresh Website and $60 Fares
It’s been a crazy few years for Mokulele Airlines after heading out on their own for a bit, then switching back and forth between several different ownership groups. Well now that Transpac Aviation has paid some decent cash for Mokulele Airlines to get them from Mesa Airlines, the funky-named airline is ready to celebrate their new ownership with a little bit of a rebranding.
For the most part Mokulele Airlines does their thing in and around the islands of Hawaii, as they provide interisland transportation to tourists and locals who feel like flying instead of swimming between them. They certainly have fewer airplanes than the competition over at Hawaiian Airlines, and Mokulele does their thing thanks to their fleet of Cessna 208B Grand Caravan single-engine turboprops. Although we’re thinking that they’ll lease something a little bit nicer if they ever get those international flights off the ground.

And the First Airline to Earn Verified Carbon Credits Is...
Hawaiian Airlines hasn’t yet started flying with eco-friendly green gas; however, they are doing their part to give back a little bit to the earth. They’re pretty proud of their progress towards minimizing environmental impact, and now they’re boasting about being the first airline to earn verified carbon credits for their green initiatives and practices.
Over the last six years Hawaiian Airlines has reduced their carbon dioxide emissions by around 22,000 metric tons—give or take a ton—and they’re doing it all thanks to their fancy car airplane washing technology. It’s way more than a bucket of suds and a hose—and certainly nothing like this—as Hawaiian Airlines claims their engine washing process is the equivalent of taking 700 cars off the road each and every year.
The Pratt and Whitney’s EcoPower engine washing system saves plenty of water and lots of fuel and that’s a good thing, but we're a little bummed that the system is a little too strong to clean our car.
It’s not like you really need any more reasons why fly with Hawaiian Airlines, especially since you’re going to at least have a layover in paradise. Nonetheless it’s always nice to see an airline being sincere about efforts to do a little good for the earth while still doing business.

Pan Am's TV Season May Be Over, But Retro Travel Lives On at the Pacific Aviation Museum
The first season of ABC’s retro travel drama Pan Am is long over (as of a few days ago), but you might just be able to get your Pan Am fix out in Hawaii. Take a break from all the swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing and schedule a little time to visit the Pacific Aviation Museum on the island of Oahu. Located within Pearl Harbor on Ford Island, the museum has everything and anything when it comes to historic military and civilian air travel as it applies to the region.
It’s probably worth a visit any day of the week, but what we’re most interested in is the new Pan Am exhibit called “Come Fly With Me.” The exhibit has been up and running since late last year, and the opening coincides with the 75th anniversary of Pan Am’s first flights to and from the islands. There’s plenty of memorabilia on hand—remember, look but don’t touch—from both the airline’s propeller days and the jet age. Museum officials are hoping that the exhibit will continue to evolve as more and more donations are acquired, and the museum is able to gobble up additional Pan Am goodies.

Take a 'Journey 2' Hawaii's Kualoa Ranch
This weekend the family friendly 3D sequel to the 2008 hit Journey to the Center of the Earth heads into theaters. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island centers around Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson), who receives a message from his long-lost grandfather Alexander Anderson (Michael Caine) from a fabled Mysterious Island. Sean decides to find the island but has to take along his stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), their pilot Gabato (Luis Guzmán), and his strong-willed daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) on this journey of a lifetime.
The movie's plot might not sound too original, but its locations make up for it. Journey 2 was filmed in Oahu, Hawaii, around the Waimea Valley and Kualoa Ranch.

Get Lei'd: Hawaiian Airlines is Hiring Flight Attendants
It might not be quite as luxurious or exciting as it is on television, but if you’ve always thought of being a flight attendant then now’s the time to do so. Hawaiian Airlines—the unofficial airline of paradise—is now looking for flight attendants to help them expand across the islands and the world.
There's already plans for a New York City-to-Honolulu flight, and who knows where else they might be headed to in the future. In total there are around 175 new flight attendant positions available, but you better get that resume ready as the deadline is February 14.

More Hawaiian Planes to Maui and What This Means for Island Hopping
There’s more flights and airplanes arriving and departing from Kahului Airport in Maui, and that’s good news for those Hawaii vacationers—and locals—looking to island hop. Hawaiian Airlines has seen quite the boost in the number of travelers between the different islands, so they’re boosting up their efforts in Maui and starting a new hub.
Unfortunately this new hub status at OGG doesn’t mean nonstop flights to and from New York City anytime soon, but it should make it a little bit easier to see different slices of paradises with a quick interisland flight. The Valley Isle will be getting like 25 additional flights to neighboring airports over the next few week, and a third of the new options will be nonstop flights from Maui to both Kauai and the Big Island. That means it’s less likely that you’ll have to connect back over in Honolulu on Oahu; you can just head from Maui to your next destination in 30 minutes-ish or less.

Hawaii Now One Major Step Closer to Becoming Gay Wedding Hot Spot of 2012
Happy New Year! Also, happy year that more same-sex couples will achieve equal (or at least equal-er) rights. Just yesterday, January 1, two more US states switched to legally recognizing and performing civil unions. These are Delaware and Hawaii. For the moment, let's focus on the latter.
Hawaii is the only US state west of the Mississippi River to allow same-sex civil unions. None have gone so far as marriage (the California Prop 8 debacle came closest) and what this means for gay couples is that their unionnot just the honeymooncan also happen in the Aloha State.
According to The Baltimore Sun/KTLA, the turning of the calendar immediately coincided with the law going in effect:

Chicago's Other, Other Airport is About to Get Busy
It’s not even Friday, and we’re already excited about some new routes. Mokulele Airlines usually does their thing flying back and forth between different Hawaiian Islands, but if all goes well they’ll soon be flying all the way to the greater Chicagoland—and beyond.
Right now the plan kind of hinges on a decision from Uncle Sam and his buddies at the FAA, but the plan would have Mokulele Airlines arrive at Chicago-Rockford International Airport (not O'Hare and not Midway) as early as March. The flights would be operated as a charter through the airlines’ Mokulele Tours group, as some chilly citizens would be whisked all the way to Honolulu through nonstop flights.

'From JFK, on the Beach the Same Day': Hawaiian Airlines to Fly Direct from NYC to Hawaii
212 and 808. Respectively, they are the area codes for dialing New York City and Hawaii. Today, however, they are also the prices for a one-way economy or first class seat on Hawaiian Airlines' just announced direct flights from New York-JFK to Honolulu starting in June 2012.
That's right. $212. To Hawaii. Non-Stop. With complimentary in-flight meals, pillows and blankets. That's all great and good, but the problem is these sale fares are going fast. Already we're seeing them raise to the $300s as planes fill forbelieve it or notautumn 2012. It just goes to show how needed this route is, since United née Continental is the only other airline making the 10-hour, 5,000-mile trek (and they dumped their free in-flight meal and other niceties almost one year ago).
The details: flights will be on an Airbus A330-200, with 18 first class seats and 276 economy (32" seat pitch in econ). Book 'em, Danno.
For a better perspective on how the new Hawaiian flights will go down, we met with the airline's CEO Mark Dunkerley this morning, mere hours after even airline crew found out they'd soon be flying to NYC.
