Our Three Favorite Big Island Snorkeling Spots

November 14, 2008 at 4:18 PM | 0 Comments

This week, Kyle Brown updated us on the budget-friendly scene in the islands. Catch up with his adventures in our Hawaii on the Cheap guide.

We quickly got hooked on snorkeling on Oahu, and soon it was the only thing on our minds when we were searching for a place to spend our time. Thankfully, the Big Island didn't disappoint. The snorkeling spots here were just as great as those on Oahu, if not even more impressive. Here's a look at three of our top picks:

The Big Island's Best Hikes For Lazy People

November 14, 2008 at 12:00 PM | 0 Comments

Hikes are pretty much free, so we did a bunch. However, we didn't want to spend too much of our, uh, time budget, so we chose some that were pretty short and sweet. Our primary mission was to see one cool thing and then get back to exploring elsewhere. Here are a few of our favorites:

Seeking Forgiveness At The Pu'uhonua

November 13, 2008 at 5:00 PM | 0 Comments

Long ago in Hawaii, the kapu system of laws was pretty strict when it came to what was and wasn't allowed, and many things were punishable by death. Guilty parties were wise to try their best to make it to a Pu'uhonua, a place of refuge, to avoid nasty consequences while paying their debt to the community.

One such place is the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, located south of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island's western coast. Here the National Park Service has preserved the area, offering a chance to see a massive ancient wall that separated the royal grounds from the areas open to commoners and many ki'i, or wooden icons, that would hold the bones of the ancient chiefs to provide spiritual strength to the area.

Our Three Favorite Beaches On The Big Island

November 13, 2008 at 10:15 AM | 0 Comments

We've already let you know where we found the best beach action on Oahu, but the Big Island also has some great strands. Don’t tell Oahu, but overall we liked the beaches on the Big Island better. Here are three of our favorites:

Exploring The Big Island's North Kohala Coast

November 12, 2008 at 5:00 PM | 1 Comment

With our adventures on Oahu coming to an end, we set our sights on Hawaii’s Big Island. By the time we got there, we were a little tired of swimming and snorkeling--poor us!--so we went on a little road trip up to the North Kohala area of the Big Island in search of Hawi.

Our Three Favorite Beaches On Oahu

November 12, 2008 at 10:10 AM | 4 Comments

Although we grew quite fond of snorkeling during our time in Hawaii, we realize that it's not for everyone. In fact, there were times when we just wanted to swim around without trying to identify a new species of reef fish. While Waikiki Beach is certainly awesome, we decided to take a look around Oahu for some new favorites. Here’s what we found:

Mystery Meat Meets Sushi: Spam Musubi

November 11, 2008 at 5:02 PM | 0 Comments

You don’t have to look far in Hawaii to find some Spam to sample--and that's great when you need some cheap eats. The meat of champions even makes an appearance at McDonald's, where you can enjoy it with your eggs. The local ABC Stores and 7-11s also have their share of Spam samples, including the local specialty: The Spam Musubi.

The Three Best Places To Snorkel On Oahu

November 11, 2008 at 12:15 PM | 1 Comment

Kyle Brown just got back from a budget-minded trip to the islands and is sharing his discoveries all this week...

With the vacation budget in mind, we rented snorkel equipment for the week before heading out. It turned out to be a good decision, as it made it easy to stop the rental car and be in the water within minutes. Best of all, we didn’t catch any diseases (yet) from using someone else's snorkel!

Cruising Oahu's Windward Side

November 10, 2008 at 4:45 PM | 0 Comments

On our second day on Oahu, we decided to venture beyond easy hikes and waterfalls. We started circumnavigating the island beginning with the eastern, windward coast. We attacked our target on the Pali Highway via state road 72; however, taking the H-3 is also a great trip to the east coast, as the elevated highway leads you straight through a lush valley.

A Short And Sweet Hike At Manoa Falls

November 10, 2008 at 11:45 AM | 0 Comments

The upside to the global financial crisis is that forgetting your money woes in Hawaii has become incredibly cheap. Kyle Brown just got back from a budget-minded trip to the islands...

On Oahu, a short drive from Waikiki Beach will transport you to what often seems like a different world. With the famous Diamond Head crater closed for some fixing up during our visit, we were forced elsewhere to satisfy our hiking needs. We were looking for something short and sweet--with a good payoff at the end.

The trailhead to Manoa Falls is just 15 minutes from Honolulu, and it fit the bill perfectly. During our visit, there were plenty of spots to park, although we did have to surrender five bucks to someone manning the lot.
