7.0 Earthquake Strikes Haiti, Photos Beginning To Trickle In

January 12, 2010 at 7:07 PM | by | Comments (0)

Update 9:10am, January 13: We have added a gallery of TwitPics of the devastation after the jump, including shots of the remains of the Presidential Palace.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Haiti's capital city of Port-au-Prince today. Details are just beginning to emerge but there is no doubt this is a catastrophic event. There are reports that a hospital has collapsed and the damage is just now beginning to be assessed. The quake could be felt as far away as Cuba and is said to have lasted for over a minute.

Many news outlets are reporting that a tsunami warning has been issued, however the Tsunami Warning Center page appears to show that a Caribbean sea watch was actually recently cancelled. There is no indication that a tsunami has been generated and data suggests there is no threat of one, according to the USGS.

UFO Travel: Nice Try, Haiti

Where: Haiti
August 27, 2007 at 10:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Yes, it's been outed as a genuine fake, but we've got to give credit for this reasonably good hoodwink. Plus, as alien fakes go, it's a lot more pleasant to look at than that alien autopsy that Fox was showing off a few years back. Ick.

Back on August 6th, a video of flying saucers was uploaded to YouTube, allegedly shot on location in Punta Cana. This was followed on August 9th by another video of alien craft gliding over another tropical beachfront, this time listed as Haiti. A heated debate over the authenticity of these videos ensued, garnering the Haiti video more than 3 million views.

As an army of skeptics descended, small doubts swelled due to little matters such as the same palm trees showing up in two clips shot hundreds of miles apart and the background's similarity to that of an advertisement for a popular CGI software.

Were this something more clever and coordinated than a homebrewed hoax, it could be the start of one hell of a viral ad campaign for getting paranormal buffs to tour Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Think about it: just south of the Bermuda Triangle, the island of Hispaniola is hurting for some love from the little green men (and little green tourist bucks). Plus, how hard is it for anywhere in the Caribbean to get good press during hurricane season?

Paris Confused Over Her Namesake

September 28, 2006 at 8:12 AM | by | Comments (0)

Paris Hilton's back--to reassert her idiocy as a world traveler.  Popsugar reports the Ms. Hilton signed up to shill for a line of new "eco-friendly" bags. For every bag purchased, the company plants a tree in a needy area.

The company turned to Paris, in hopes she would accompany them on a trip to Port-Au-Prince to plant 40,000 trees next month. Apparently, when Paris was told about the trip, "she had no idea where Haiti was." Well, of course, there are poor people there (gasp!). When told the country is primarily French speakers, Paris replied with, "I wouldn't mind spending a few days there and a weekend in Paris."

No word on whether our favorite clueless heiress is still hawking for the line or not.
