Google Buys East Coast Heat Wave

July 18, 2006 at 11:06 AM | 0 Comments

Yes, it appears Google even owns the current heat wave.

Some enterprising young web two pointers put together WeatherBonk. So now we can see exactly what the difference in temperature between Central Park and the Hamptons is with just a couple of scrolls to the right. Great. This mash up is complete with web cam look ins, though since we don't see any sweat on the web cam photos we can't be sure the shots are really live.

Now if only someone would come up with a Google maps mash up that could fix the air conditioner in our car.

Unthirsty: Your Enabler for Thriftiness

July 12, 2006 at 10:31 AM | 0 Comments

There's nothing more valuable than local knowledge when you're traveling. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to come by; guidebooks can only go so far, and knowing the ins and outs of watering holes in any given city is not always something worthy of brain space.

Luckily, Unthirsty fills the void, mapping out bars and their happy hours city by city across America. Prospective happy hour celebrants can narrow their selections on Unthirsty by happy hours taking place at the time of search, food specials, patios or wifi. Knowing is half the battle, especially when boozing it up is involved. Let the informed drinking commence!

Mash-Ups Categorically Inclined

This map is a mash-up on so many different levels it just fried our brain. Well, maybe that happens more easily on a Friday, but it's beside the point. What's more exciting is why our brains are getting fried: Wikimapia!

Yeah, it's a mash-up of Google Maps and Wikipedia. The wiki part isn't quite there yet; they've got the locations all scouted out, but the info when you click on places is hit or miss. Still, it's a damn cool idea, and once it's gets fully sorted out, it'll be a go-to place for travel info. We'd wager that guidebooks and wikipedia are wrong and equal amount of the time, anyway.

Mapping the World Cup Frenzy

May 4, 2006 at 8:52 AM | 0 Comments

As the countdown to the start of the World Cup on June 9th keeps on ticking, media coverage of the event will only become more frenzied and confusing with every passing moment. Worried that you'll be overwhelmed? Want your news in convenient, Google Map form? Well then, your prayers have been answered. The Michigan Bazaar collects news about the World Cup and arranges it both by country and by host city within Germany.

In other words, where else would you go to find out that  Lufthansa is only pretending to be the official airline of the World Cup (when it's actually Emirates), or even that the team name of Cameroon is the elephants? We're just as surprised as you are, and demand that the Pittsburgh Pirates change their name to the pachyderms immediately.
