Good Fare: Arbua To Ya!
September 27, 2006 at 10:45 AM | 0 Comments

JFK-Aruba, $129 OW on JetBlue
We're posting this fare, even though JetBlue redesigned their web site so that it looks less chic and a bit more Disneyesque. We're willing to overlook that aspect of the experience for now, but the moment those leather seats get mouse ears, it's a deal breaker. Nonetheless, as is generally the rule with JetBlue, new routes equal good deals.
In this case, it's their new route to Arbua, which runs $129 OW before taxes. A few restrictions: Travel must be from mid-October to mid-December, and there are blackout dates around Thanksgiving. Also, you must purchase by October 5th. Otherwise, you're free to support JetBlue's continued colonization of the Caribbean.

We Love You to the Max(Jet)

Good Fare: JFK-London Stansted, $999 RT on Maxjet
We'll admit it, we've been guilty of hating on Maxjet and EOS on more than one occasion, although we take issue with the concept more than anything else. And we're not even getting an attitude about it after a comped trip on the airline, like some. We think that once they work out the kinks and present a real value, they'll succeed.
To that end, Maxjet is offering an impressive sale: $999 RT between JFK and Stansted, including taxes. You get all the privileges of a Maxjet fare; the only restrictions are that you must book by October 1st for travel between November 1st and the end of February. We're big fans of whatever curry British Airways serves in coach on their JFK-London routes, but this represents a real step up to us, for not that much extra cash.

Good Fare: Buenos Aires on the (Even More) Cheap

Good Fare: Miami-Buenos Aires, $656 RT on LAN
Tango and thong bikinis, together at last! LAN Argentina is inaugurating nonstop service between Miami and Buenos Aires, starting at $656 RT (before taxes). The service starts on Ocotber10th, and tickets will be available on the thrice-weekly route with this deal until the end of December. Looks like there are some blackout dates around Christmastime and New Year's, so plan accordingly.
Of course, since the tango is all about passion, you don't want to plan too much. If you want to take a trip to the current ex-pat center of the universe on an excellent international carrier, though, this is a mighty good way to do it. Seriously, has anyone else seen the LAN flight attendant's uniforms? Mee-yow!

Good Fare: London-hong Kong, $300 RT on Oasis Hong Kong
The world of low-cost carriers just got a whole lot bigger. Oasis Hong Kong has announced the launch of their service between London Gatwick and Hong Kong. One-way fares start at $150 between the two cities for economy; business class seats are less than $900 each way.
This is pretty exciting; it could spell the beginning of transatlantic LCCs sometime in the near future, for one thing. For another, it seems like amenities are not bad on Oasis: seats have 32 inches of pitch and come with 14 video channels on a personal TV set. We're not sure if we'd fly for ten hours with Ryanair, but this we could handle.

Good Fare: Unloved, but not Unused

Newark-London Gatwick, $314 RT on Continental
Continental is running a sale for winter flights between Newark and London Gatwick through September 7th. For lack of a better term, we'll call it the unloved overflow airport sale. The dates for which it applies are November 15th to Dec. 14th and January 8th to March 21st. That's enough time that you actually have a good shot a snagging this deal. Of course, once you get there, you're at Gatwick, which doesn't help you as far as connecting goes, and you'll be oh so thirsty... but for $300 dollars round trip with taxes and fees, we're sure that you'll find a way to soldier through it.

Good Fare: Devner-Steamboat Springs, $76 RT on United
United is running a big sale on many of their routes for this weekend only. It's on a lot of them--over 3,000--so there are plenty of options, but we chose this fare because it seems pleasingly simple.
Mostly, who wouldn't want to go to Steamboat Springs, Colorado? It's fun to say, sure; there isn't the same posh association as there in places like Vail or Telluride. More importantly, Steamboat Springs is building a new airport, just for you. Which means you might want to check it out before that opens in December and things get really busy. It's a big ski town, so now's the time to check out the mineral baths and horseback riding. What's not to like?

Good Fare: What Price Freedom?

Good Fare: JFK-Houston, $73 OW on JetBlue
JetBlue may not actually have any genuine Snakes on a Plane sales, but they are running an oil barrel sale (or Blue Barrel Fares, as they call it). The price of their fares between Houston's hobby airport and JFK--the service actually launches next month--are tied to the price of oil. If nothing else, it's certainly a good reason to wish for peace in the Middle East.
It sounds silly, but it's not the first time the price of transportation has been tied to something arbitrary. Isn't there a rule that the price of a subway fare in New York should be the same as a slice of pizza and a soda?

Good Fare: Vegas Sucks You In
August 9, 2006 at 11:25 AM | 0 Comments

Good Fare: Seattle-Las Vegas, $224 RT on Alaska Airlines
Yesterday we linked to a New York Post article detailing the best way to save your cash while in Vegas, plus good strategies for getting there on the cheap. (The better to fritter it away on gambling and strippers while you are there, we suppose). Because Vegas is such a popular destination, it can be hard to catch a break on fares, as they are often wrapped up in hotel packages. A standalone airfare deal, therefore, is rarer than it should be.
That's why it's worth it to snag this $224 RT fare from Seattle on Alaska while it's still out there. Midweek is better, as always, and the fare is part of a larger sale on Travelocity of flights to Vegas from all across the U.S. May the slots and tables be kind to you all.

Good Fare: Romania Mania!

Good Fare: Rome-Bucharest, $35 RT on SkyEurope
As part of their Go East marketing campaign, Central European low-cost carrier SkyEurope will begin flying a route between Bucharest, Romania and Rome's Fiumicino airport at the beginning of next year. To aid in the promotion, the introductory price on the fare is one euro cent, which works out to roughly $35 dollars once you factor in taxes.
Of course we love these super cheap deals, and SkyEurope is one of the best LCC's in Europe. (even if Wizz Air will always have the best name in the region) Plus, we still feel that Bucharest is an emerging hot destination, just as soon as people get bored with Croatia and the Romanians take care of the whole roaming packs of feral dogs thing. SkyEurope will also offer service between Bucharest and Budapest, if you're into that kind of thing.

NYC-Tucson, $129 OW on Jet Blue
It's no secret that we are pretty enamored of JetBlue. It's hard not to be! Leaving from JFK can be a pain, (though LaGuardia is a black hole of delays in the summertime anyway) but they keep adding routes to underserved cities. It sure keeps up placated.
This time, they've announced a cross-country route to Tucson. It may be hard to believe for people on the east coast, but Tucson is hip city in Arizona, of all places. Unlike Scottsdale (or Snottsdale, as it's been called recently) we bet they wouldn't have any problems if a Pink Taco franchise opened there, either.
Fares, at $129 one way, will begin when the service launches on September 28th.

Good Fare: ATL-PSP, $219 RT on American (via Airfare Watchdog)
Palm Springs! Dinah Shore Drive, Bob Hope Way; we dare you not to choose this as one of the hippest, most au courant destinations on the block. OK, so maybe that won't fly. But it's still cheap to get there from Atlanta thanks to American's sale fare of $219 RT with taxes. Only a one-night stay is required, and many dates remain open.
There's a little bit of chic in PSP, if you want to pony up the dollars to stay in Le Parker Meridien Palm Springs; otherwise go ahead and golf to your heart's content. When we say desert, golf is certainly the first thing that comes to mind.

Good Fare: Frontier Does Dallas

Good Fare: Denver-Dalls/Fort Worth, $220 RT on Frontier
Zippy low-cost carrier Frontier is offering some sch-weet fares between Denver and other locations throughout the country, Mexico and Canada. We like Frontier--they're based out of Denver, they have adorable animals painted on the tails of their aircraft, and they even have TV on board, just like JetBlue.
We picked this fare, between Denver and Dallas/Fort Worth, since both are the kind of busy airports that make flying on this kind of airline worthwhile. Sorry, Oklahoma City residents! The fare is part of a larger Frontier sale running through tomorrow for travel from mid-August through the end of October.
