Travelers to Japan Will Soon Find Free WiFi at 45,000 Hotspots

Where: Japan
June 10, 2014 at 10:44 AM | by | ()

Finding free Wifi and avoiding high-priced connectivity fees have long been a challenge for travelers to Japan, but a solution is in the works as the Japanese government is currently trialing a program designed to provide foreign visitors with free public Wi-Fi.

The plan is to make it real easy on visitors by issuing them a Wifi card with a user name and password to access the system. When you arrive at the airport, there will be a counter at which you present your passport to get a wifi card. This counter has yet to become permanent in many airports, so be sure to ask where it is when you arrive. There are also locations within the cities, such as department stores, that can issue the cards.

June 5, 2014 at 8:49 AM | by | ()

The first thing we thought of was finally, and we hope that you’re thinking the same. It’s been a long time coming, but just the other day the gods of complimentary connectivity paid a visit to the terminals and concourses at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Free WiFi is now a thing for one and all at the world’s busiest airport, and that means you can quickly and easily complain about your Delta delays without wasting your monthly data allotment.

Your Holiday Gift from Seven Airlines: Free In-Flight Facebook Access!

December 23, 2013 at 9:32 AM | by | ()

If you're taking to the skies any time in the next few days, there's a good chance that you can while away the hours with your laptop or mobile device. Thanks to the folks over at Gogo and Charmin (yeah, the toilet paper people), flyers can access Facebook for free during the busy holiday travel season.

Starting today and running through December 30th on seven airlines, Charmin will open the social media browsing session for free. "Like" friend's updates, post photos of their in-flight snack, and check out their 2013 year-in-review status update. Just be cautious because, if you start clicking on external links, you will be asked for your credit card details to fork over some cash for full access.

Free WiFi is Coming to Around 20 More Airports, But There's a Catch

July 10, 2013 at 7:24 AM | by | ()

We love us some free airport WiFi, but we’re still bummed out on occasions when we search for a network and it’s turns out to be a pay-to-play situation. Thankfully it looks like more and more airports are flipping the switch on the complimentary access; however, it’s going to cost you in a different way.

Advertising is the name of the game when it comes to WiFi access at certain airports, and that’s the case with what MediaShift is providing to these airports. They’re calling it the Premier Airport Network—um, wonderful—and basically you’ll get wireless access in exchange for watching a few ads placed throughout your internet session.

London-Heathrow Airport's Free Wifi Isn't Really What It Seems

May 29, 2013 at 10:59 AM | by | ()

Despite being one of the busiest and most popular airports in the world, London-Heathrow has been majorly lacking in the free wifi department. Right now, the only ways to get online are either to use wifi in one of the airline lounges or to pay Boingo, one of the most annoying companies out there.

So when we saw a headline about Heathrow offering free wireless as of June 1, we were pretty excited. However, there's a catch.

From LAX to Dublin, This Month Brings Travelers Free WiFi Access

September 10, 2012 at 9:29 AM | by | ()

It seems like the smaller regional airports love providing their travelers with free WiFi, but unfortunately we find that the larger cities and hubs just aren’t down with the complimentary internet access. Recently we heard that access at Chicago’s airports was getting a little more affordable—although not free—and now it looks like the cheap connectivity is spreading to a couple more airports.

Obviously the airport in Los Angeles handles plenty of planes and people, and thankfully they’re now adding free WiFi to their list of offerings. Unfortunately there’s kind of a catch, so it’s not as simple as just logging on and streaming Netflix and Hulu for hours and hours. The new WiFi will be yours to enjoy for about 45 minutes.

DFW Teams Up with AT&T for Free Airport WiFi, Finally

April 11, 2012 at 8:55 AM | by | ()

With in-flight WiFi gaining popularity, the importance of WiFi in the terminal isn’t exactly quite the necessity it once was. Nonetheless, that hardly means that we’re going to pass up some free terminal-wide WiFi, especially in a pretty big airport. Thankfully, Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport is the latest airport to flip the WiFi switch from costly to complimentary, and it's going to be accessible to travelers throughout the terminals, concourses, and even the parking garages. We’re just kind of curious if you can pick up a signal up in the airport’s Skylink train.

Airport officials at DFW are teaming up with everyone’s favorite mobile technology carrier—kidding—AT&T to offer up the free WiFi to the masses. It sounds like the behind-the-scenes work is already underway, and that things should be good to go as soon as September. Unfortunately there’s a bit of a catch—of course there is—as you’ll need to watch a 30-second commercial before signing into the service for the first time.

What's New at Amtrak: More Free WiFi and a Montreal Deal

February 9, 2011 at 8:43 AM | by | ()

We may talk about airplanes quite a bit here on Jaunted, but trust that our love is strong for trains, too. It just sucks that we can't be as proud of Amtrak as Europe and Japan can be of their awesome train systems, but at least Amtrak is making headway in the on-board connectivity departments. In addition to the Acela trains and select stations having WiFi, the west coast Cascades train now has free WiFi.

The Cascades, which travels between Vancouver, British Columbia and Eugene, Oregon, has thus far relied on its awesome scenery to do the majority of the entertaining for its passengers. But now, thankfully, people can get a little work done while enjoying the ride, as the WiFi network will allow passengers to log into VPN networks as well. Of course, just as with in-flight wifi, don't put all your hopes on hooking into on-track WiFi as a signal isn't guaranteed.

Amsterdam Airport Finally Gets Free WiFi...Kind of

Where: Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands
December 23, 2010 at 12:04 PM | by | ()

They have a Heineken bar, a library, a champagne bar, some of the first iPads in airline lounges, they were the first airport on Foursquare...and now they finally have free WiFi throughout all terminals. We're talking about Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, of course! We just heard that the service is available from this week on, which, while just in time for Christmas, was not totally in time to help out the bulk of travelers delayed by the heavy European snowfalls. The only catch: it's only free for one hour.

To log on at AMS and claim that hour, access the KPN network and choose "Free WiFI." That's the hour-long option. If you go with the "Premium WiFi," you'll be charged like in the olden days, but you'll apparently get better speeds. For a more reliable option, they've still got Boingo there, so those of you with purchased Boingo plans need not even worry.

Apple's Three Newest International Stores are Tourist Hotspots

September 1, 2010 at 2:04 PM | by | ()

Today at 10am PDT, Apple's Steve Jobs stepped out on stage to give the company's autumn keynote address. Along with all sorts of product announcements like a smaller, touch-screen Nano, a fresh Shuffle and chic black Apple TV, Jobs also briefly detailed the newest additions to their collection of stores around the world.

The three—Apple Paris, Apple in Covent Garden, London and Apple Shanghai—helped the company reach the 300 stores worldwide milestone, and they're already open. Considering how Apple's 5th Avenue store is one of the most photographed places in New York City and a featured location in guidebooks, we're not amiss in saying that the the new London, Paris and Shanghai stores will soon become as hot a tourist spot as any other landmark.

Already we gravitate to the glowing glass facades of Apple stores in international cities when we visit, and just to mooch off the free WiFi signal.
