What's New at Amtrak: More Free WiFi and a Montreal Deal

February 9, 2011 at 8:43 AM | by | Comments (0)

We may talk about airplanes quite a bit here on Jaunted, but trust that our love is strong for trains, too. It just sucks that we can't be as proud of Amtrak as Europe and Japan can be of their awesome train systems, but at least Amtrak is making headway in the on-board connectivity departments. In addition to the Acela trains and select stations having WiFi, the west coast Cascades train now has free WiFi.

The Cascades, which travels between Vancouver, British Columbia and Eugene, Oregon, has thus far relied on its awesome scenery to do the majority of the entertaining for its passengers. But now, thankfully, people can get a little work done while enjoying the ride, as the WiFi network will allow passengers to log into VPN networks as well. Of course, just as with in-flight wifi, don't put all your hopes on hooking into on-track WiFi as a signal isn't guaranteed.

Amsterdam Airport Finally Gets Free WiFi...Kind of

Where: Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands
December 23, 2010 at 12:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

They have a Heineken bar, a library, a champagne bar, some of the first iPads in airline lounges, they were the first airport on Foursquare...and now they finally have free WiFi throughout all terminals. We're talking about Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, of course! We just heard that the service is available from this week on, which, while just in time for Christmas, was not totally in time to help out the bulk of travelers delayed by the heavy European snowfalls. The only catch: it's only free for one hour.

To log on at AMS and claim that hour, access the KPN network and choose "Free WiFI." That's the hour-long option. If you go with the "Premium WiFi," you'll be charged like in the olden days, but you'll apparently get better speeds. For a more reliable option, they've still got Boingo there, so those of you with purchased Boingo plans need not even worry.

Apple's Three Newest International Stores are Tourist Hotspots

September 1, 2010 at 2:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

Today at 10am PDT, Apple's Steve Jobs stepped out on stage to give the company's autumn keynote address. Along with all sorts of product announcements like a smaller, touch-screen Nano, a fresh Shuffle and chic black Apple TV, Jobs also briefly detailed the newest additions to their collection of stores around the world.

The three—Apple Paris, Apple in Covent Garden, London and Apple Shanghai—helped the company reach the 300 stores worldwide milestone, and they're already open. Considering how Apple's 5th Avenue store is one of the most photographed places in New York City and a featured location in guidebooks, we're not amiss in saying that the the new London, Paris and Shanghai stores will soon become as hot a tourist spot as any other landmark.

Already we gravitate to the glowing glass facades of Apple stores in international cities when we visit, and just to mooch off the free WiFi signal.

Google Gives The Greatest Gift Of All: Free Airport WiFi Over The Holidays

November 11, 2009 at 10:47 AM | by | Comments (0)

Flying for the holidays and intrigued by the possible availability of free In-Flight WiFI? How about free WiFi in airports as well?

You may be entitled to a Christmas, Hannukah or Kwanzaa gift, compliments of Google. The multi-billion dollar corporation is bucking up and plans to help soften the blow of flight delays this holiday season by offering free wifi at select airports all over the country. This promotion begins November 17 and will run through January 15, 2010 at 47 airports nationwide. Some of the airports that will offer free wifi with your delays include Miami, Las Vegas, Houston, Boston, Seattle, and even little terminals like Toledo and Central Wisconsin.

Unfortunately, this "B-list" of airports excludes "A-list" hubs like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Dallas. Either way, we are thankful for any freebies this holiday season. For the complete list of airports, check out Google's cute little holiday WiFi website here.

Google And Microsoft Battling To See Who Can Provide More Free Holiday WiFi

November 10, 2009 at 5:04 PM | by | Comment (1)

When the tech world's two major borgs square off for travelers' time and attention, that can only be good news for the rest of us. Google had already arranged for free WiFi on Virgin America flights and—as of this morning—they're also giving it away at more than 40 airports across the country. But that's small time compared to the deal Microsoft just struck to promote their search engine Bing.

Bing has worked out an arrangement with WiFi provider JiWire which will allow users to get free Internet in exchange for doing just one search on Bing. This is a campaign that will reach all of JiWire's hotspots which, more or less, amounts to just about everywhere:

Why the Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art is Worth a Visit

April 9, 2009 at 2:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

We kind of alluded to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art last week in that story about Pasadena art museums, but it really deserves its own post.

The museum is the largest encyclopedic museum west of Chicago, with over 250,000 works of art - and from every inhabited continent - spread over an ever-growing maze of buildings and pavilions. Plus it's one of those LA destinations that's actually accessible by Metro. Plus they have free WiFi. So off we go.

Heathrow T5 WiFi: Now as Big as 50 Football Fields

September 8, 2008 at 9:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you get stuck waiting for a plane (or hanging around to see if your baggage will show up) at London Heathrow's new Terminal 5, then things just got a bit more pleasant if you're keen to hop online while you wait.

T-Mobile has launched a WiFi hotspot that covers the entire area of Terminal 5, and they're boasting that it's the biggest in the country, spanning an area equivalent to 50 football pitches.

If you're not already a T-Mobile customer then you can get an hour's access for £5 or 24 hours for £10; but don't forget that if you can get into a British Airways lounge you'll get WiFi for free.

The other dream possibility? Your experience at T5 is so smooth and quick that you don't have time to log on. That really does sound like a dream.
