October can't come soon enough, as we've just confirmed that the TWA Flight Center at New York's JFK Airport will again be open to the public for one day: Sunday, October 13.
The reason? The 11th annual openhousenewyork festival (OHNY), a weekend event that flings open private doors to showcase typically hidden gems of the city. The weekend is October 12-13 and although the full schedule won't be released until early October, it's nice to know if the TWA Terminal is a part of the fun since many people actually travel in for the pleasure of roaming and photographing this icon of modern architecture.
So, maybe we talk about Hong Kong a lot. And maybe we're pretty clear about our preference for flying 15 hours rather than, say, just 5. Regardless, rest assured that we'll always let you know when there's an awesome, easy-to-enter contest aimed at letting you enjoy some of that sweet, sweet long-haul travel for free.
Currently Cathay Pacific is looking to give away a dream of a Hong Kong trip, aimed at foodies who wouldn't mind a long weekend away, on the other side of the world, dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant.
If that describes you, read on for the contest entry details...
Attention New Yorkers: If you're in need of a new camera bag, laptop sleeve, messenger bag, weekender duffel or even a wheeled carry-on from a company that makes good products, listen up!
Today through July 21, bring beer over to Crumpler's Soho store and trade it for a new bag or laptop sleeve. No money required (except to buy the beer).
Don't just grab whatever's in your fridge, however; Crumpler has specific demands for each type of bag, and all because they're trying to stock up on booze before throwing a huge party (which you're then invited to attend). Check out the beer to bags equations. For example, 2 24-pack cases of Sixpoint get your a sweet messenger. We love the 3 24-pack cases of Cooper's deal to trade for the wheeled duffel carry-on. Two cases of Brooklyn Lager equal a backpack!
Buy some beer, get a bag, and drink the beer too. Not a bad deal for carving a little time out of your day, if we do say so ourselves.
Note: participants must be 21+

A shared project of AT&T and solar energy company Goal Zero will bring the charging stations to 25 rotating locations in New York for just three months.
Considering what a mess the city was post-Hurricane Sandy and how many people struggled to find places to charge their phones while their homes were without power, three months is not going to cut it. Somebody has GOT to make these charging stations permanent. (Until then, hit Destination Bar on 13th Street and Avenue A to charge your phone while you have a beer. You're all welcome in advance.)
Does this mean that cell phone theft in NYC is about to skyrocket? We'll have to wait and see.

No plans for a Friday night in New York City? Have we got a recommendation for you.
2013 marks the 5th annual outdoor summer movie series at the USS Intrepid, where films are screened right on the open deck of the aircraft carrier for FREE. Basic admission to the Intrepid typically costs $24, and at least with the free screening you'll have the privilege of walking around the flight deck for nothing out-of-pocket.
This season sees six films on the docket, all with a central hero figure. Yes, you can chillax with a sub sandwich on the flight deck of the ship, right next to a slew of military fighter jets and helicopters, while watching Maverick pull aerial stunts in "Top Gun."
The 2013 screening schedule:

Hanging out in Amsterdam
A 6+ hour layover sure sounds like guaranteed misery, right? Wrong, if you're between flights at one of the several international airports that offer city tours for passengers in transit.
Some airports provide these tours absolutely free as a way to promote tourism, but all require that you clear immigration and customs in order to take them.
So before you settle down for a 10-hour boredfest on a bench near an airport Sbarro, try out one of the transit tours at these six airports:

Leonardo DiCaprio might have said best when he compared going to Cannes to entering the helicopter scene in La Dolce Vita. "It's an insane experience," he explained. "The entire town is turned into a red carpet. Every hotel is a premiere. But at the same time, it is the mecca for the world to celebrate filmmaking and bold filmmaking."
