Another Year, Another Slew of Free Days at National Parks
In case you haven’t noticed, the days in 2012 are starting to get pretty limited and before you know it it’s going to be time for 2013. The National Park Service is already getting set for the calendar switch, as they just announced their freebie days for the following year. So if you still have a couple more national park visits on your bucket list, you might be able to visit for a few fewer bucks.
Up first is January 21, which corresponds with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and after that Uncle Sam is opening up his back yard for an entire week. It’s pretty much a park free-for-all during National Park Week, as the gates swing open free of charge between April 22 and April 26.

Megabus is Pretty Much Giving Away Seats in the UK
Everyone knows that those low-cost carriers practically give away the cheap flights over in Europe, but there’s also another kind of low-cost carrier—buses.
Megabus has made its way to the shores of the United States, but they still have a special place in their hearts for the citizens across the pond. That's especially the case for those who call the United Kingdom home.
To celebrate winter they’re giving away 10,000 free tickets to destinations all over the country, and it’s all part of their Megabus Winter Sale. Just like the cheapie airlines, these ground guys also know how to stick it to travelers when it comes to the fees and charges. The free tickets are almost free, as you'll still be plonking down 50 pence as a reservation fee.

One More National Park Freebie Weekend for 2012
It seems that every few months there’s a chance to score a gratis visit to some of the country’s greatest treasures, and that chance is coming up once again. It might be getting a little cooler where you call home, but it’s probably still warm enough to enjoy one more slice of the great outdoors.
In support of Veteran’s Day the National Park Service is continuing their free entrance days this upcoming weekend, as they’re planning to swing open the gates on November 10-12. These are the last fee-free days of the year, so if you haven’t taken advantage of Uncle Sam’s generosity in the past now is the time to do so.

No Plans This Weekend? 'Museum Day' Means Free Visits All Over the US
Looking for something to do this weekend? How about checking out a local museum for free? In case you didn’t know, tomorrow—Saturday, September 29—is Museum Day, and that means plenty of free admission and complimentary access to museums across the country.
All the fun is organized thanks in part to Smithsonian magazine and all you have to do is head over to their website and start museum shopping. Museum Day Live! gives you free access to the museum of your choice, as well as your guest. It’s kind of like a buy-none-get-both free kind of deal, so you really can't lose. There are some limitations, so it’s probably best to start free museum shopping as soon as possible. Just remember to print out your ticket voucher thing and bring it along with you.

A Few of the Best Free Spots to Hit in Seattle

The Library
Heading to the US' Emerald City need not mean packing all flannel and topping up your Starbucks card. Seattle's got plenty other stuff going on and, all this week, Lilit Marcus will be proving this right.
Until this month, public transit rides within the center of Seattle were free. The free rides may be gone, but there are still plenty of free attractions worth checking out in the city. These are a few of our favorites:

Flying Virgin Atlantic This Thursday? Check Your Amenity Kit for $4,000 Eyeshades.
So. Adding a little Swarovski crystal tramp-stamping on their new Upper Class bar wasn't enough for Virgin Atlantic. The airline has just announced that, on September 6, five lucky Economy passengers on Virgin Atlantic flights will also enjoy an extra bit of sparkle by finding crystal-covered eyeshades in their onboard amenity kits.
They're not just any crystal-covered eyeshades, either; these are Swarovski ones with 3,000 crystals painstakingly hand-applied over 10 hours. The value? $4,000 each. Kinda makes you not want to put your greasy, jetlagged face on it and snore through a 7-hour flight, huh?

Volunteers Needed for the 10th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend
On October 6 & 7, the 10th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend will once again allow New Yorkers and tourists free access to hundreds of sites talks, tours, performances and activities in neighborhoods throughout all five boroughs. Visitors will also get an exclusive look at the architecture that define New York City.
But, to keep the event running smoothly they need plenty of volunteers to help out. Volunteers can commit to as little as one 5-hour shift on either Saturday or Sunday and, in exchange, they'll receive a signature OHNY t-shirt and button, which allows front-of-the-line access for two to all all non-reservation sites and programs during OHNY Weekend. Volunteer duties include greeting visitors, managing lines, or asking visitors to sign up for a mailing list.

Get Inside JFK Airport's TWA Flight Center for One Day This Fall
YESSSSSSSSS. Please commence with the exuberant jumping around (we have) as it was just announced that the TWA Flight Center at New York's JFK Airport will again be open to the public for one day this coming fall: Sunday, October 7.
The reason? The 10th annual openhousenewyork festival (OHNY), a weekend event that flings open private doors to showcase typically hidden gems of the city. Last year was the very first instance of the TWA Flight Center welcoming hoards of the curious and, even better, access was free!
The ohny newsletter noted this year's good news, but further information is minimal. Here's what it said:

Last Chance to Catch Portland's 'Trek in the Park' for Free
This weekend is your last chance to catch Trek in the Park at Cathedral Park in Portland, OR. Each summer a dedicated group of Portland theater geeks come together to perform a classic episode of Star Trek before a live audience.
This year's episode is Journey To Babel, in which Captain Kirk learns Ambassador Sarek and his human wife Amanda are Spock’s parents.

Salute the Sky, New York: It's Air Force Week
What with all the summer air shows, this last weekend being Aviation Day and all sorts of airline announcement in anticipation of fall travel, it's no wonder we've been all above airplanes lately. This only continues this week as NYC celebrates Air Force Week.
You know how it's said that there's always something going on in NYC? Well it's true and this week that something just happens to be military jet demonstrations. flyovers, water rescue drills and some on-deck action at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. For your drooling-over-autos pleasure, Air Force Project Supercars, the X-1 Mustang and the Vapor Challenger, will be on hand as well.
