One of New York's Best Free Events Will Return in October

July 22, 2015 at 10:05 AM | by | ()

This is an early warning to mark off your iCal for the weekend of October 17-18, and book your tickets to be in New York City.

These are the just-announced 2015 dates for one of the best free events of the year in the Big Apple: openhousenewyork (OHNY). For one weekend every year, some of the city's most private places fling open their doors to complimentary tours for the public. A few tours do have a small fee, but they'll be worth it. Some popular locations in the past have included Kickstarter's headquarters in Brooklyn, the World's Fair Hall of Science in Queens, some private apartments that have gone "off the grid" despite being in the middle of Manhattan and, of course, the TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport.

Ryanair Might Celebrate Its Anniversary By Slapping Your Facebook Photo On A Plane

July 13, 2015 at 9:28 AM | by | ()

While we do occasionally love to tease the word's most contentious low-cost airline, we must give props to Ryanair for its efforts to catch up with the world of social media following many years of avoiding it altogether. Its latest campaign, focused on Facebook, isn't one to be ignored — especially if one of your bucketlist items is having your face on the side of an airplane.

As the airline celebrates its 30th birthday, 30 Ryanair planes are due to add the names and faces of 30 Facebook fans to their livery. Though the winners won't be announced until September, you'll have to enter the contest now.

Airports Offering Free Coffee to Soldiers

May 26, 2015 at 9:00 AM | by | ()

Memorial Day might be over, but we should still make a point to stop and remember — and thank — our brave military men and women. And thanks to the folks behind Hudson Group, American airports are places where uniformed service members will continue to find some tokens of gratitude.

According to USA Today, Hudson-operated airport retailers will offer free small coffees to American and Canadian military members through July Fourth. The weeks-long giveaway applies to more than 50 cafes, shops, and kiosks in terminals and concourses across the country, including spots like Dunkin’ Donuts, Aeromart and Euro Café, among others.

JetBlue Keeps Fly-Fi Free for the Future

April 14, 2015 at 9:49 AM | by | ()

What were you doing on December 11, 2013? We remember what we were up to, which was being in flight over Cape Cod, testing out JetBlue's latest onboard amenity: in-flight WiFi, or, as JetBlue calls it, "Fly-Fi."

Since that day, the airline has worked to install the high-speed, Ka-band system on more and more of their airplanes and, as of this month, celebrated their 100th Fly-Fi-equipped A320. Wandering Aramean reports that all A321s are connected, all A320s should be finished soon, and even the Embraer 190s are due to be online in 2016.

What's even more remarkable than this speedy work is the fact JetBlue has continued to offer the basic Fly-Fi access for free, even though they initially stated it'd be free for at least the first six months.

The latest news is that this commitment to complimentary onboard connectivity is continuing. You get free in-flight Fly-Fi! And you get free in-flight Fly-Fi!

Why Virgin America is Entering the Dallas Film Festival (and Giving Away Flights)

April 2, 2015 at 5:12 PM | by | ()

Here's the thing. Virgin America's April Fool's prank of starting flights to Branson, MO already happened, so this next announcement can't be another prank (even if sounds like one).

The airline, which last year introduced a 5-hour, 45-minute film of a "BLAH Airlines" flight from Newark to San Francisco, is taking the film to a real film festival, with a prize component!

The film, a fictional (albeit strikingly realistic) portrayal of the interminably boring transcontinental flights of legacy airlines like United, has garnered over 814,000 views and actual film reviews; we even named it the Best Viral Travel Video of 2014. Now, the lengthy feature will show on April 10 as part of the Dallas International Film Festival, and the airline is seeking audience members.
