Aaron Koblin's Haunting Flight Paths Project

March 10, 2009 at 9:26 AM | by Omri | 0 Comments

This is a screencap from an interactive Google Map created by artist Aaron Koblin, representing the 205,000 aircrafts the FAA tracked on August 12, 2008. In this case, we've filtered the air traffic by model, so each color represents a different one of the 573 aircrafts that flew that day. The flight paths are darker as the planes maintain their altitude and brighter the closer they are to the ground.

The work emerges as part of a collaboration between Koblin, Wired, and flight tracker FlightView. Koblin took images from his larger Flight Paths project and layered them, creating the interactive map.

You can go to the main project page and play around with the real version. You can choose your own filters, zooming in and out of your favorite city, and even look at the paths of specific aircraft.

Adventures of Link: Flight Tracking 101

December 19, 2007 at 5:09 PM | by pbb | 0 Comments

The overlords of the Internet at Google have upgraded the search engine's flight tracking powers. Before the new search feature debuted, you'd only get a list of links to track your flight, some of which didn't always work. Now Google's integrating FlightStats' data directly into a search results page. (This has the added benefit of making the service more BlackBerry friendly.)

You can also get the same info by texting GOOGLE (466453) your airline and flight number. If we're near a computer, though, we like digging up all sorts of flight info from these more propeller-head oriented sites:

FlightAware Tracks Flights in Real-Time

January 13, 2006 at 10:01 AM | by markj | 0 Comments

FlightAware tracks flights in the US that the FAA includes in general aviation.  That means not only can you track commercial flights, but you can also track private planes.

You can track by flight identification, airport code, or commercial flight number.

Furthermore, private pilots may request that their aircraft's data be barred from public viewing by filling out a Block Aircraft Registration Request.
