This 737 Flight Simulator Calls Boston Home

November 26, 2014 at 3:37 PM | by | Comments (0)

Imagine: You’re inside a 737, flying over the Atlantic at 40,000 feet. Food poisoning incapacitates the pilots. A flight attendant cries over the intercom:

“Attention! Is there a passenger on board who knows how to fly a plane? We repeat: Is there, a strong, brave passenger with sinewy, rope-like muscles who is capable of displaying such great heroism that men and women everywhere will fall forever at their feet?

You stand. You’ve got this. Why? Because you’ve conquered Flight Experience, a flight simulator that just opened its first American location in Boston. (Well, it’s actually in Burlington, Massachusetts, about 15 miles north of the city.)

This New Zealand-based line of simulators is so realistic, it’s actually used around the world for professional pilot licensing. American regulations don’t allow for that, but you can still experience every aspect of piloting an airplane—from takeoff to landing to turning on the “no smoking” sign—inside a to-scale replica of a 737 cockpit.

How to Fly an A380 without Any Pilot Training Whatsoever

Where: Australia

If you're one of those frequent flyers who hoard miles for the ultimate trip, now is your chance to burn some of them for a once in a lifetime experience, even though you won't even leave the ground. Kinda.

Qantas is opening up something typically only reserved for their own pilots, and giving members of its frequent flyer program the opportunity to play in one of their A380 flight simulators in exchange for a substantial chunk of earned points. For those jetsetters who have at least 275,000 points, the super-jumbo simulator could be yours (and you can bring a friend).

Test Your Cockpit Knowledge to Win a Day at an Air Canada Flight Simulator

Where: Canada
February 1, 2013 at 1:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

"Have you ever dreamed of sitting in an airplane's pilot seat?"

Air Canada isn't asking if you've ever dreamt of flying a plane, just if you want to sit in the pilot seat, which is all well and good considering they've just opened up a Facebook contest to win a day with an Air Canada instructor pilot in a flight simulator at the airline's Flight Training Center in Toronto.

To score such an awesome prize, you've got to show off some basic A320 cockpit knowledge by playing a multiple choice game called "Land Your Way."

Progress through three levels of harder and harder questions to reach the status of "Captain" and view your final score. The more points you get, the more times your name is entered into the draw to win the flight sim grand prize. Unfortunately the prize is only open to Canadian citizens, but that's not stopping you from playing the game.

Flying from Toronto to Chicago in a 737: Our First-Person Flight Sim Fun

Where: Australia

Since we do a good amount of flying, we've been lucky enough to enjoy seat 1A but also thankful enough just to be onboard in the last row of economy. Recently, this Jaunted writer had the opportunity to sit in an all totally new area of the plane (to us). No, I didn't get to travel in the cargo hold as luggage, instead I got to fly the plane.

Long gone are the days when children were escorted up to the cockpit for a view of the brains of the aircraft, a visit with the pilots, and, inevitably, a set of plastic wings. Since 2001, airlines no longer allow passengers access to the flight deck for obvious reasons, but the dream still exists for many.

Last month we told you all about the British Airways simulator gift card idea. Obviously, my family and friends were listening since I received a boarding pass (gift voucher) for a 60-minute flight simulator experience with a company called Flight Experience. As someone whose interests are primarily consumed by travel, I am always looking for a way to upgrade. Naturally I went ahead and upgraded myself from the 60 to the 90-minute simulation.

Buy This: Time in an Official British Airways Boeing Flight Simulator

November 28, 2011 at 5:43 PM | by | Comments (0)

Perhaps you have people on your holiday shopping list for whom you completely dread finding gifts...or maybe it's you falling into that category on your loved one's lists. Whatever direction the holiday shopping stress is coming from, British Airways has a solution.

Last week, BA decided to spice up Black Friday and tweeted about gift ideas, like vouchers for the general public to get into their Flight Simulator Experiences.

It all sounds like something right out of the Nieman Marcus Fantasy Gift section in their catalog, with prices to match. Normally reserved for their own flight crews, the simulators are offered to any self-proclaimed aviation geek. Vouchers are available from £399 for a 1-hour flight on a Boeing 737-400, to £1,347 for a 3-hour flight on a 747-400. Sorry Airbus fans, aircraft options are limited to Boeing only and also include 757-200, 767-300 and 777-200.
