Get Lei'd: Hawaiian Airlines is Hiring Flight Attendants

February 7, 2012 at 8:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

It might not be quite as luxurious or exciting as it is on television, but if you’ve always thought of being a flight attendant then now’s the time to do so. Hawaiian Airlines—the unofficial airline of paradise—is now looking for flight attendants to help them expand across the islands and the world.

There's already plans for a New York City-to-Honolulu flight, and who knows where else they might be headed to in the future. In total there are around 175 new flight attendant positions available, but you better get that resume ready as the deadline is February 14.

What You Need To Know About British Airways' New Mixed Fleet

January 27, 2012 at 3:17 PM | by | Comments (8)

How to identify BA's mixed fleet cabin crew: they smile

You may remember the saga. First we were die hard British Airways haters. Then a flight to Vegas changed all that. It was our first experience of BA’s new mixed fleet (in operation for a year now) and boy, did it make a difference. We were entranced. Was it a one off? We prayed not.

Our return flight from Vegas had just as nice a crew (a full review on that another time). But we wanted to wait until we’d taken a couple more flights until we declared an official crush on the new mixed fleet. Now, though, since our trip to Budapest last weekend, we've seen enough to declare ourselves: British Airways appears to have transformed under the mixed fleet crews.

Staff are friendly, smiley. They give the impression of wanting to help you. They give the impression that they are happy to be on board, and that they actually like each other. They are as far away from the dour crew of old as Rick Perry was from knowing his government agencies. They are great. So because they’re great, we’ve got the lowdown on them. Here’s your mixed fleet 101.

New Standard Set for Creepy 'Sexy Flight Attendants' Airline Advertising

January 27, 2012 at 2:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

Modern-day airlines are not shy about travel advertising built on the sex appeal of their flight attendants. Ryanair closed last year with a particularly blatant reminder, in the form of a lingerie calendar, that booking a ticket with the airline would get you a chance to interact with their hot employees. That wasn't particularly original, inasmuch as we've recently seen sex advertising and nude calendars involving flight attendants of Aeroflot and Mexicana and Spanish Air and Avianova. It was, however, somewhat effective at generating customer interest, since it turns out that sex sells. Who knew?

There are those people who criticize these ads, either on general sexism grounds or because the ads potentially promote the sexual harassment of flight attendants. Then there are other people who throw up their hands on the question, settling for the neutral argument that it's the job of advertisers to make effective ads and that's that. Finally there are the people who actively defend sex-tinged advertising, because what's wrong with sex? But on this we hope all sides can agree: this 1950s ad for Czech Airlines—which doesn't seem like an ad but really was—is pervy and creepy and pervy and creepy.

Finnair Flight Attendants Surprise Passengers with Bollywood Booty Shaking (VIDEO)

January 27, 2012 at 8:27 AM | by | Comments (0)

This Friday morning, do you have a weird craving to watch Scandinavian women wearing saris, dancing in sync with lively Bollywood music? Well then, this is your lucky friday!

Just a few days ago, a group of dancing Finns boarded a Finnair flight from Helsinki to Delhi and—you know what's coming—performed a whole dance routine to "Om Shanti Om" in celebration of India's Republic Day. Even business class got a dose of the booty shaking, and check out the flight attendants getting down!

Of course there's a story behind the idea to bring this onboard, and you can read it here, on the Finnair blog. Umm and yeah—we totally want to learn that dance now.

Pan Am Episode 12: Smugglers, Spies and a Surprise Prince

January 23, 2012 at 12:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

Laura asks for a loan from Amanda

Read our past Pan Am episode recaps here.

Let us first say that this is the episode where the girls have looked their best so far. Kate, Colette and Maggie all attended a fancy foreign party and thus donned killer cocktail dresses, while Laura and Amanda showed off in figure-hugging sweater sets. When will Pan Am inspire a retail collaboration like Mad Men did with Banana Republic? Oh, probably never, but a girl can dream.

Anywho—most of the gang was off to Rome this week, but Bridget (pilot Dean's old/new flame) was conspicuously absent and Ted stayed home to begin playing house with his new fiance, the bi-curious Amanda (played by Ashley Greene). Filling the gap was the newish character Captain Broyles (aka "Sky God"), who we learned last episode moonlights as a smuggler of goods, a fact which comes heavier into play this episode.

Onboard the Singapore Airlines A380: The Iconic Singapore Girl

January 20, 2012 at 5:14 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Jaunted Singapore A380 Series:

1. The Grand Tour
2. The Singapore Girls
3. Eating (and drinking) all the way to Singapore
4. Everything you ever wanted to know about Business Class
5. Design details

This is how you usually spot The Singapore Girl: whizzing through an airport in a swirl of color, turning heads with her poise, polite smile and designer luggage. And then, just like that, The Singapore Girl has vanished beyond the security check and you're left wondering...who is she? where is she off to next? how does she keep her figure?

Naturally there are answers to all these questions, some of which we've discovered over the last few days in Singapore, both from flying for 20+ hours with them on the inaugural Singapore Airlines A380 flight on the route JFK - FRA - SIN and from visiting the official SIA Training Facility near Changi Airport.

Spoiler alert: The Singapore Girl keeps her figure thanks to "extracurricular activities..."

Scoot Unveils Cabin Crew Uniform, One Step Closer to Flying

Where: Singapore
January 17, 2012 at 9:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

One of the most exciting low-cost carriers to come out of Singapore has taken one step closer to hitting the skies. Last week our friends over at Scoot announced the frocks their cabin crew will be sporting on their inaugural flight. As expected, the companies signature golden yellow is a feature color to make the livery part of the cabin.

Black and yellow color blocking, females get a smart shift dress with a v-neck. Properly fitting and casual is the name of the game for the ladies walking the aisles. The dress is accented with the Scoot logo on the front left side. The ladies will turn heads, à la Pan Am, when walking through the airport for their Sydney launch in June.

Pan Am Episode 11: Back in the USSR, with Light Espionage

January 16, 2012 at 10:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

Broyles crashes Dean's Moscow pep talk

Read our past Pan Am episode recaps here.

This episode picks up exactly where we left off last week, with pilot Dean and newly returned stewardess/former MI6 spy Bridget hopping into bed with each other. Bridget still loves Dean and wants to pick up where things left off (with her as his fiance), but Dean has moved on to Colette and would rather just bed Bridget one last time. Maybe she's so irresistible again because he just found out she's a spy, and spies are hot? That's just our guess.

Regardless, Dean and Bridget part that morning in London for good (here's hoping), as Dean reveals again how hurt he's been over all the lies: "So everything I didn't understand was because you were a spy and I was in the dark?"

Ring ring ring! Dean picks up the hotel room phone to discover he's been summoned back to New York for a meeting with Pan Am's chief Juan Trippe. About what? Oh well, after a nice computer-generated panorama of the Pan Am Worldport at JFK, we find out it's all concerning PAA being the first western airline to return to the Soviet Union, and Trippe wants Dean in the captain's seat—the "face of the Jet Age" and whatnot. Wait, we thought that was Laura on the cover of LIFE? Anyways, the plane leaves ASAP.

China Eastern Flight Attendants Are the Latest to Be Kung Fu Fighting

Where: China
January 10, 2012 at 10:18 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last April, we told you about Hong Kong Airlines training their cabin crew to ward off terrorists and unruly passengers by using kung fu. Now, the martial art safe for onboard combat is being offered to flight attendants on China Eastern Airlines.

The Shanghai-based carrier announced that the first group of 20 cabin crew recently finished their courses. In all, 2,600-plus flight attendants will be trained for self-defense by using the ancient fighting technique. Airlines executives think that flight attendants could be seen as an easy target for would-be baddies.

Pan Am Episode 10: London, Loathing and a Lie Detector

January 9, 2012 at 12:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

We highly doubt a stewardess, in their immanculate Pan Am uniform, would sit on the floor of a plane to drink, while surrounded by perfectly fine First Class seats

Read our past Pan Am episode recaps here.

Wow. It's been a full month since the last episode of Pan Am and, to tell you the truth, we blanked on where things left off. When a show is in danger of being cancelled, it's not the wisest to postpone new episodes for four weeks because—just as if the show was already cancelled—watchers begin the process of forgetting about it.

Luckily Pan Am is back for more episodes until the network figures out what to do with it, and last night continued the romantic drama and espionage intrigue we've come to expect. With a side of retro air travel.

Transatlantic Time Hop: Skipping the New Year on British Airways

January 2, 2012 at 5:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

Comedy hats and smiles. Two things you don't normally expect to see British Airways staff wearing

When we told people last week we were flying British Airways from Las Vegas to London overnight on New Year’s Eve, they were aghast. Why weren’t we partying? Why were we flying alone? Why were we leaving Vegas on the best night to be in Vegas?

We told them they were wrong on several counts. First, NYE in Vegas is horrendo, period. Second, after the Christmas Eve mini party we experienced on our flight out, we suspected the return journey could actually be fun. Thirdly—since there are few things we enjoy less than forced festivity—the idea of spending NYE at 40,000ft watching crappy movies was highly appealing.

And fourth, we coolly assumed we’d fly past loads of fireworks and cross so many timezones that we’d witness the year turning about six times before we reached London.

So how was it?

The Naughtiest Flight Attendants of 2011 Are...

December 30, 2011 at 9:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2011 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2012, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2011 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Each and every year there are plenty of naughty flight attendants getting into trouble, and it usually involves wearing something a little bit different from the company-issued uniform, or not wearing something at all. This year, Canadian flight attendants stripped for their Turbulence Calendar of 2012—nice, eh—and of course getting frisky in the cockpit is sure to get you on Santa’s naughty list. However, when the final votes were tallied we just had to give out this year’s naughtiest flight attendants award to the high-flying ladies of Ryanair.
