French Maid or Flight Attendant? One Airline is Considering Crew Costumes

Where: China
May 17, 2013 at 1:36 PM | by | Comments (0)

If you're planning to fly on China's cheapy carrier, Spring Airlines, the person welcoming you at the aircraft door could be a maid or butler. No, the low-cost carrier isn't upping their game with white glove service in the skies, but they are having a little fun.

Spring called upon their fans via their Facebook page to suggest themes for flight attendant costumes, the post was accompanied by a young lady attired like a french maid. Some people took it seriously, offering up themes like traditional Chinese Opera, schoolgirl outfits and Star Wars as themes, others found it pretty offensive.

Throwback Thursday: Flight Attendant Toga Party!

May 9, 2013 at 12:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

Sure, we love all the speed and comfort of modern travel, but it didn't that way overnight. Every Thursday, we're going to take a look back at travel the way it used to be, whether that's decades or centuries ago. This is Throwback Thursday, travel edition.

"Nobody's second class on Southern."

Nevermind that no one remembers Southern Airways. The beauty of this ad lies in the first half, as a coach class passenger on a competitor airline wanders into First Class and finds a toga party. Actually it's more than a toga party (only the flight attendants don toga dresses); it's a bacchanal, complete with elaborate food platters and feeding passengers grape-by-grape.

We won't spoil the surprise of what happens when that passenger returns to his "seat" in coach, but it's entertaining enough that we had to point out this ad to you on Throwback Thursday.

Think any First Class cabins are like this today? Perhaps Emirates or Singapore...though instead of togas it's a kebaya and instead of grapes it's Krug and Dom Perignon champagne.

Throwback Thursday: Virgin Atlantic's Flight Attendant Uniforms of 1984 and 2014

May 2, 2013 at 1:13 PM | by | Comments (2)

Sure, we love all the speed and comfort of modern travel, but it didn't that way overnight. Every Thursday, we're going to take a look back at travel the way it used to be, whether that's decades or centuries ago. This is Throwback Thursday, travel edition.

The year was 1984 and the place was London-Gatwick International Airport. A 747-200 named "Maiden Voyager" taxied on the tarmac for a virgin flight to Newark, on a virgin airline. The airline's name? Virgin, or, well, Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin's flight attendants weren't yet known for their cherry red lips, or their scarlet pencil skirts and chic up-dos, but they were on their way.

Fast forward to today, as Virgin Atlantic continues to fly 747s—the fleet and destination list are much larger now—and they're again ready to show a fresh face with new flight crew uniforms designed by Vivienne Westwood.

One Airline May Ban Flight Attendants from Wearing Red Lipstick

April 29, 2013 at 1:54 PM | by | Comments (0)

An airline famous for its red pout is Virgin Atlantic

While rumors of new Turkish Airlines uniforms are on everyone's lips lately, there's one thing supposedly being banned from lips completely: red lipstick on Turkish Airlines flight attendants.

According to BIANET, the new beauty policy on Turkish will forbid "the usage of red lipstick and hair buns for women flight attendants." The article also notes a 2012 revision to the dress code that banned "the use of red-bleached hair, platinum blonde style, and flamboyant silver make-up for female flight attendants."

Turkish is already getting flak for being restrictive, after an image leaked of what's supposedly their new uniforms. The wardrobe is not only conservative with respect to Muslim beliefs, but the style and colors look more early 1970s than early 2010s.

Hot Pink and Hot to Trot: Qantas' New Uniforms Shock in Sydney

Where: Australia
April 16, 2013 at 8:10 AM | by | Comments (0)

Qantas' new Uniforms are hot. They're also hot pink in places, and so hot that the airline just unveiled them with a full-fledged runway show and livestream during Sydney Fashion Week, starring Aussie supermodel Miranda Kerr.

Kerr catwalked along with the rest of the Qantas crew models to show off the 35 uniform styles to be worn by 12,600 staff starting in 2014. The looks, consisting of 15 different fabrics (including fine Australian Merino wool, Italian leather and a knit trilby hat made from recycled bottle tops) were designed by Martin Grant and paired with the unmistakably scarlet soles of Christian Louboutin shoes.

The Louboutins completed the head-to-toe peeks of red in the uniform, but hold up—remember the saying "if it's too good to be true, it probably is." Such is the case here. The shoes were special only for this runway show, a fact verified by our friends at Australian Business Traveller, who were in attendance at the event. Qantas crew won't be donning the French designer's shoes, which regularly retail for $700 and up; it's normal black shoes after today. Boo hiss.

The Date's Set: Richard Branson Dresses in Drag on Special May 12 Flight

Where: Malaysia
April 12, 2013 at 11:26 AM | by | Comments (0)

Right now, somewhere in Malaysia, a red skirt is being tailored to fit Sir Richard Branson.

On May 12, Branson will join Air Asia Group CEO Tony Fernandes on a flight from Perth, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The six-hour trip is a special one, as it's finally the moment Sir Richard makes good on a bet he lost to Fernandes in late 2010, over whose Formula One race team would be ranked higher. Spoiler alert: Fernandes' Lotus Racing team won over over that of Virgin, and the plans to install Branson as a flight attendant on an Air Asia X flight began.

The event has been delayed many times, but finally seats are now for sale from $399 AUD ($420 USD) on the special, one-way flight, and may be purchased online. Be sure to book AirAsia X’s flight D7 237 on Sunday, May 12.

SFO Airs Out the Archives for a Retrospective of United Uniforms

April 10, 2013 at 9:06 AM | by | Comments (0)

United just opened up the airline archive, as they’re looking to make room for some new stuff. They’ve got decades of uniforms that they’re looking to show off to the public, so they just sent a whole bunch of them over to San Francisco International Airport for a new display.

In total there are flight attendants uniforms from like the very first flights back in the 1930s through the current styles of today. Green capes, blue suits, and everything in between are now available to check out in person between April 8 and September 15. Unfortunately there isn’t a sneak peek of United’s new uniforms, as it sounds like those are still on backorder—ha.

Asiana Flight Attendants Win the Right to Wear Pants

Where: Korea
April 4, 2013 at 9:57 AM | by | Comment (1)

After about a year of back and forth and fight after fight, Asiana flight attendants have bucked their dress-code and can now rock up to work wearing a smart pair of pants to serve passengers. A South Korean human rights group has deemed the skirt-only rule for cabin-crew discriminatory, as it is far too gender specific.

For the first time in 25 years, any one of the over 3,000 flight attendants can wear pants to work without a slap on the wrist. The revised 10-page guidelines for what the female crew can wear gets as detailed as how big their earrings can be, what color their hair can be and which type of eye makeup can be worn.

Not an April Fools' Joke: Flight Attendant Jobs are Out There

April 1, 2013 at 9:40 AM | by | Comments (0)

It might just be the worst day on the internet—April Fools’ Day—so we’re trying our best to give it to you straight.

If you’re looking for a job in the airline industry there’s a company looking for a few good men and women to serve up in the skies. It might not have the prestige of a legacy carrier or an international airline, but you need to start somewhere. That’s why you might want to proofread that resume one more time, as Pinnacle Airlines is getting ready to do a little hiring.

The carrier operates regional routes for bigger airlines like Delta, so your dreams of flying overseas and serving up champagne might be a little far for now. However, there’s plenty of flight attendant positions up for grabs, as well as options for mechanics, crew schedulers, and even accountants. Assorted analyst, manager, and writer positions are available too, as Pinnacle looks to move their home from Memphis to Minneapolis-St. Paul later this spring.

Is 'Koalaing' the New Planking?

March 12, 2013 at 11:10 AM | by | Comments (0)

We know Ellen Degeneres is heading off to Australia very soon after she "pulled an Oprah" and surprised her audience with tickets down under. Now, it seems the talk show host is trying to start a new trend. Koalaing!

Planking has come and gone, "owling" has come and gone, and now we are witness to a new craze of making like the cute and cuddly Australian marsupials. Just like a koala hangs out in gum trees, one person latches on to another with all 4 limbs; wrapping arms and legs around the person. It looks ridiculous, but we imagine it would make for great photo ops. (side note: koalas are not as friendly as they look).
