United Will Hit The Runway In 2011 With Cynthia Rowley-Designed Uniforms
It's amazing what you can learn on Twitter on a Friday afternoon, namely that United Airlines is all in a tizzy today over the announcement that a new look is coming for their flight attendants: uniforms by fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. Already, the Chicago Tribune is on the case, discovering that the redesign is the "first time in recent history that United has tapped a well-known designer for the job."
We're not so surprised however; Cynthia Rowley is a Chicago native, and United is not only based in Chicago, but calls the Willis (née Sears) Tower home. The new uniforms won't come until Rowley completes her trip to visit United employees in Chicago, LA, New York and London to ask them for their opinions. And although Rowley is known for her ready-to-wear designs for women, the United designs will cover all bases, literally: "The uniforms will be designed for flight attendants, pilots, customer service representatives and maintenance employees."

The Worst Way To Score An Upgrade: 'Jostle' A Flight Attendant
Everyone knows (or should know) that rule numero uno for boarding a flight is not to annoy or body check the flight attendants, because then you risk being kicked off the plane or just incurring their wrath throughout the flight. But apparently Dom Carter, news anchor for NY1 and recent subject of a domestic violence scandal, can't be bothered with clearing the aisle to make way for the flight attendants.
Dom was boarding a Delta flight from NY-LaGuardia to Kansas City on Saturday when he jostled a flight attendant, who then recognized him from the news, didn't appreciate the physical contact, and called the cops, saying "This man deliberately slammed into me, I want him off the plane!"
Who did what exactly we don't know, but we do know that Dom was kicked off the flight only to be apologized to by Delta staff and presented with an upgrade to first class, according to Gothamist. While Dom surely doesn't need his name in he news any more these past few weeks, the event seems to have turned out well for him. Still, we do not advocate bumping into flight crew in the hopes of scoring an upgrade similarly. Instead, we're still all about flattery.

The Ladies Of KLM Debut Their New, Blue Fashion
The employees at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines are getting an early Christmas present. Earlier this month, new uniforms were revealed at an airline fashion show just for them. Unfortunately, the new uniforms are only for the airline’s female employees, so male fashionistas will just have to sit back and jealously look on. It’s not all bad for the male employees however, since they got an upgrade back in 2000.
Dutch designer Mart Visser has created the new uniforms, and they will start to appear in an international airport near you starting in April 2010. The airline has preserved its trademark blue color that it has used for many decades, but has given things a facelift with the completely new design. KLM is pretty pumped about the new threads, saying that it was just one way to show that they have confidence in their brand despite the current economic climate.

Virgin America's 'Fly Girls' Sign Up for a Reality Show

Farrah was a flight attendant on Virgin America's first-ever flight. No word on whether she will be the next LC, Heidi or Lo.
Will an upcoming reality show be a sexy look at the lives of flight attendants in the air and on the ground, taking us back to the golden days of flying when pilots and their stewardesses were invited to all the hotspots upon landing on the runway?
Or will it just be a disastrous trainwreck with mostly fictional storylines that does a huge disservice to flight attendants in America? We sincerely hope its the former but there's always a risk when reality shows profiling a profession get slapped together.
Nonetheless, Virgin America announced yesterday that a new reality show from the CW (home of Gossip Girl) will feature five "beautiful Virgin America flight attendants" as they jet around America.

Despite The Economy, Allegiant Air Is Hiring Like Gangbusters
If you’ve always wanted to get paid to travel and don't mind actually working for it, then you may want to check out Allegiant Air. The low cost carrier is hiring for all sorts of positions, so if you’d rather stay on the ground, they have might have an opportunity for you too. Best of all, the airline has actually been doing pretty well. They have been making money each quarter despite the travel slowdown, so for now at least, a job with them is probably somewhat safe.
Being a flight attendant may no longer be the glamorous position it used to be, but it’s still probably pretty cool, especially if you can score some travel perks when you’re not on the clock. Allegiant is looking for a few good ladies and gentleman to fill positions out of Mesa, Arizona. No college degree needed, but they say it would definitely be an asset. Just make sure to clear your schedule if you get a job, because you’ll be in Las Vegas for a four-and-a-half week training course. Hear that? First stop: Vegas.

Delta Says 'No Fat Chicks' For Its Signature Red Dress
Besides the whole Coke or Pepsi controversy, the merger between Delta and Northwest has gone pretty smoothly. Sure, employees and representatives on both sides had their issues, but for the most part they've quickly become one big happy, blended family. However, now that things are almost done, the Northwest flight attendant union is speaking out against Delta's fashion.
The union is upset because Delta’s signature red dress for its female flight attendants is only available up to size 18. Red definitely is noticeable, and the Northwest union feels that Delta doesn’t want to draw attention to its larger employees. These Richard Tyler-designed dresses aren’t the only options for in-flight fashion, as there are plenty of blue pantsuits available in larger sizes, but then you'd be without the chicness of a red wrapdress.
We say that the union has a legitimate complaint. If you’re going to offer a snazzy red dress, then you should offer it to everyone. Certain flight attendants may look better and more professional in a more traditional uniform, and some may look great in that red dress. Let the flight attendants decide what looks best for them, and we’ll trust that they make the right choice.

Continental Asking Flight Attendants To Stay Grounded
Most people would gladly leave their jobs for the opportunity to do something else for a few months. However, taking a sabbatical is a tough choice when your company is the one initiating the leave.
Continental Airlines is asking their 9,500 flight attendants to think about taking voluntary leaves starting in September. Obviously the airline is looking to cut costs and save some cash during this period of slow travel and reduced spending.
Workers who opt to take a leave of absence can choose from five or nine month time periodswhich is a long time to be away from the skies, considering all of the safety details and more that an attendant must have memorized. During their absence, the flight attendants will still maintain travel privileges, health insurance, and will accrue vacation time, but just won't be paid.
Clearly it’s hard to voluntarily give up your paycheck, but with an abundance of empty seats on planes across the globe, now might be a great time to take some time off to travel. The airline is looking for about 650 volunteers, and although the economic situation is bleak, we’re thinking they’ll have no trouble finding some folks willing to hang up their wings for a few months.

SeatGuru's Survey Says United's Flight Attendants Are The Worst
SeatGuru just released results of their latest survey on airline quality and airline everything else. We always take information like this with a grain of salt, but it’s still interesting to see what a bunch of random people think about what’s going on in the sky.
Apparently, people don’t like much when it comes to United. The airline scored the title of rudest flight attendants. Don’t worry United, American Airlines and US Airways weren’t too far behind for flight attendant friendliness. All three domestic carriers were neck and neck when it came to the quality of their in-flight dining: not good. The trio also didn’t do too well when it came to the coziness of seats. JetBlue’s gray leather topped the charts for the comfort of economy seats.

The Final Traces of Northwest Airlines Are Being Removed This Week

Fans of Northwest Airlines aren’t going to have a good start to their travel this week. Although the airline still won’t be totally merged into Delta just yet, things are getting pretty darn close. After a week of digging through their closets and showing off their in flight fashions from years past, Northwest’s flight attendants will be debuting Delta digs starting today. Let’s just hope everyone can get along and merge into one big Brady Bunch of an airline.

What Has Your Southwest Flight Attendant Performed For You Lately?

You know the scene. You’re boarding the plane, trying to find a good seat while avoiding that lady who’s lifting a suitcase bigger than her into the overhead compartment. Once you’ve settled into your fixed position for the next couple hours, the safety briefing becomes the background music as you start flipping through the copy of US Weekly you scored at Hudson News. However, you may put that magazine down if you're on a Southwest Airlines flight.
Dave the Rapping Flight Attendant has taken over the forward cabin with his preflight announcement. Learning how to buckle seatbelts and pay for booze on board has never been so fun—if you want another kinda drink just holla, alcoholic beverages will be four dollars. He’s sick and tired of the same boring announcement, so he started doing his best to entertain the passengers—and himself—all in the name of safety.

Deltalina Shares Her One-Bag Packing Tips
To us, there's nothing more snoozy than reading detailed tips on how to squeeze the most junk into a small roll-aboard or how to cram enough gear for two months into a tiny pack. But Delta is hoping to spice up your packing with some tips from YouTube-famous Deltalina--pointers that are all the more important now that the airline is charging $15 for your first checked bag.
In talking with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Deltalina "reveals" that rolling clothes is the best way to neatly pack your stuff while also reducing wrinkles. Once everything's tucked away, she says, dropping a luggage tag with your contact info inside the bag before closing it up is a good idea. That way, if the ID you've attached to the outside disappears, ruthless luggage handlers can still determine which wheelie is yours.
The tips aren't exactly Earth-shattering, but as was the case with those recent TSA videos, they can't hurt with a bustling holiday travel week coming up. And having Deltalina doing the packing is sure to garner some extra attention, too. To wit: This post!

Heaping Praise On Our Flight Attendant Heroes
Though advertising from decades past would have you believe otherwise, the main reason flight attendants are working your flight is to keep you safe. That usually means handling an evacuation or restraining alleged troublemakers, but on an Air Canada flight this January, it meant helping the pilot land a 767.
