Okay everyone, ready for some serious South America travel news? So LAN—which is really a group of airlines including LAN Chile, LAN Ecuador, LAN Argentina, LAN Express and LAN Colombia—made all kinds of changes, for the better, to their routes and in-flight service today, February 1.

· First off, LAN Colombia (which only really started as an airline in December 2012 after LAN took over Colombian airline AIRES) is now flying direct from Miami to Bogota. The inaugural hit the skies earlier today, complete with a visit from Juan Valdez, who served the passengers their in-flight coffees. Fares for this new route, which runs four times weekly on Airbus A320s, are $400 roundtrip, including taxes & fees, if booked by February 6. Of course, you can go straight through to booking via their Facebook page.

How to Follow Us on Singapore Airlines' First A380 Flight from New York-JFK

January 16, 2012 at 5:59 PM | by | Comments (0)

Our first glimpse of the A380 at JFK, hiding behind the Aer Lingus jet

We type this from the bowels of the Oasis Lounge at New York-JFK Terminal 4, where the WiFi is achingly slow and our fingers jitter from a combo of excitement and the cold air leaking in.

Tonight marks the first scheduled departure of a Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 from JFK, and we'll be onboard...on flight SQ 25 all the way from New York to Frankfurt International, and on to Singapore-Changi International.

Although we'll be flying above your head for the next 22-ish hours, the fun doesn't have to stop. Quite the contrary! Here's how to follow along for all our hot and bothered Singapore A380 excitement:

Mile High Speed Dating Hits KLM, But No Joining the Mile High Club

December 19, 2011 at 12:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

We admit there have been times that we may have put noise cancelling headphones just to give the illusion of listening to music, warding off fellow passengers' incessant blabbing. There also have been times we've noticed someone that looks interesting—ahem attractive ahem—and wished we could swap seats to get a little closer.

The latter is how KLM prefers to fly, and they'll soon offer passengers the ability to pick their seatmate based on Facebook or Linkedin profiles. By next year, the airline will not only offer a window or aisle preference, but allow customers to view the profile of other passengers, then choose whether or not to sit next to them.

The first red flag we see is the obvious privacy of personal details. Passengers must opt-in to have their social media profile available for other travelers to see. Which means, not everyone will be taking part in this singles bar in the sky. Sigh of relief! It also begs the question; will the aircraft have a cabin area set aside for these passengers who are single and ready to mingle?

A Warm and Fuzzy Story Featuring Cookie Cakes and Southwest Airlines

November 28, 2011 at 10:49 AM | by | Comments (0)

Hopefully you’re safely back in town after a weekend of holiday travels, and if you’re lucky you might have even been served a bag of peanuts by one of the best flight attendants around. Apparently she’s been hard at work—and extra friendly—aboard plenty of Southwest Airlines flights, and she’s so nice she even got the airline a customer for life.

On a recent flight, a passenger and his girlfriend were quite impressed with a flight attendant by the name of Holly. It just happened to be a WiFi-enabled flight, so the traveler logged on to Facebook to let Southwest know what a great flight it was. On a whim he suggested that someone meet them at the gate to give Holly a raise, a promotion, or even a burrito from Chipotle. He even agreed to sign a contract pledging to only fly with Southwest Airlines as long as Holly was in charge of passing out the peanuts and serving up smiles.

LAX's New Facebook Launch Raises Some Questions

September 26, 2011 at 3:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

Ever since someone stupidly convinced Orbitz that they needed to invest in a Facebook application two years ago—the premise being that people would want to share their travel plans with all of their high school and college and work and random stalkerish Facebook friends—we've kind of given up on complaining about meaningless social media projects. Organizations will build Facebook pages, even if there's no real need for those types of organization to have Facebook pages, because that's what organizations do now.

Fair enough.

So let's quickly glide past how we don't really understand why LAX needs a new Facebook page, which is something they just launched. The Los Angeles airport has had a Twitter account since 2009, which makes perfect sense because people are used to going to Twitter for breaking news in general and for travel news specifically (checking an airline's Twitter feed for delays is now just something we do).

DFW Airport Now Offers Deals, Thanks to Foursquare and Your Smartphone

August 8, 2011 at 11:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

We already know that Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport isn’t a fan of paying taxes—well, kind of—and now they’re looking to offer even more savings to those looking to spend some coin in the terminals and concourses.

The airport is teaming up with Foursquare and Facebook Places—clearly they’re not playing favorites—to offer up all kinds of location-based deals and steals when you and your crew are killing time before your flight.

How to Be a VIP for Free at the Telluride Film Fest: 'Like' Virgin Atlantic

July 28, 2011 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Virgin Atlantic has managed to align itself with anything sleek, sexy, and, well, just plain awesome on the travel front, with this cool cache now extending to international cultural happenings. Film festivals—what with their covetable goodie bags, after parties, and celebrity pull—certainly fall into the "Ever-So-Hip" category, which is likely why VA has aligned itself with the forthcoming Telluride Film Festival, set to take place from September 2-5, 2011.

VA will serve as Telluride's partner airline, hosting a splashy tribute event during the festival run and a contest that gives film aficionados a shot at attending TFF come fall.

Alaska Airlines Gives Facebook for Free to Celebrate Their WiFi-Equipped Fleet

June 7, 2011 at 11:40 AM | by | Comments (0)

Alaska Airlines has been slowly but surely working to get all their airplanes fully equipped with the magic that is in-flight internet access, and right now they’re pretty much all the way there.

They’ve got a couple more planes here and there to finish, but by the end of June they’re thinking that around 92 percent of their planes will be equipped and able to hit up Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and more from around 35,000 feet in the sky thanks to Gogo—and this even includes flights in and around Alaska.

The NTSB Launches a Blog About Employee's Feelings or...Something

March 25, 2011 at 1:14 PM | by | Comments (0)

Imagine that you're in charge of a government agency, and you've heard about this social media thing, and you figure you should get some of that too. So instead of reading our posts about how there are appropriate and inappropriate uses for new technology, and maybe rethinking your idea, you start a blog.

But there's a problem. Since you don't really have any use for a blog—again, you're just doing this because some consultant told you its best practices¡you aren't really sure what kind of content you're supposed to post. That would make you just like the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which just launched their new Wordpress blog SafetyCompass on a free account.

Delta is Totally Cool With You Checking In on Facebook for Your Flight

March 22, 2011 at 9:31 AM | by | Comment (1)

We’re thinking that someone in Delta’s social media department is certainly looking for a promotion, or at least a fat raise when the 2011 review period rolls around. Last year Delta was the first airline to sell tickets through its Facebook page, and earlier this month they just started up offering all kinds of traveler assistance both through Facebook and Twitter.

Well now they’re practically bringing their whole website right into Facebook, as you can now do pretty much everything while checking in on your friends and family—you know, like your grandma that joined last week. Delta’s Ticket Counter allows you to check-in for your flights right there in Facebook, and apparently they’re like the first airline to do something like this.

Tourism Ireland Unveils Farmville Knockoff To Make You Want To Visit Ireland

March 21, 2011 at 3:11 PM | by | Comments (0)

We've been pretty skeptical about airlines and tourism boards that go all-in on social media, the fear being that "building something shiny" gets in the way of "designing something useful."

There are productive ways of using social media—Twitter for customer service, Facebook for coupon campaigns, etc—and then there's what happens when companies build something just because everyone else is doing it. Creating Facebook games in particular has become a problem, with some travel companies doing very well and others not so much.

The newest attempt at social gaming comes from Tourism Ireland, which hopes to harness the power of Facebook to get tourists to the Emerald Isle. The game, dubbed "Ireland Town," is built as an explicit Farmville knockoff. Users are tasked with creating their own Irish town in between visiting tourist attractions and defeating challenges. Those who get through are entered in a contest for a four-night stay in Ireland.

And here's where things begin to head south.
