I admit to being an over-planner: Just about every meal on my nine-day trip to Quebec was set ahead of time. But you can’t plan for those perfect little places that you stumble upon. You know, the kind of place you have to go into, regardless of whether you’re even hungry. Beauty’s Luncheonette is that place.

Over the first few days of my visit to Quebec, I consumed large quantities of overly rich (and overly French) food. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! But sometimes, even when you’re visiting another country--or maybe especially when you’re visiting another country--you just have to have a pizza.

You know how you feel obligated to visit museums when you travel? Well, I do, especially when it’s a country that speaks another language. But somehow, by day three of my visit to Quebec City, I still hadn’t visited the first museum. Happily, I was able to remedy my philistine status pain-free. With hot chocolate.

Most days on my recent trip to Quebec consisted of meals interspersed with bits of walking and sightseeing in order to work up an appetite again. A week in though, and I hadn’t found the perfect meal. I thought I’d go home a bit disappointed that my husband and I hadn’t had a blow-me-away dinner. Then we went to Confusion Tapas du Monde.

Montreal, and Quebec in general, these days has a terrific array of ethnic eateries. Visitors need never have a bite of French food if that’s not their thing. But French food at Canadian dollar prices assuredly is my thing, and my favorite French food--aside from cheese, of course--is escargots. Bad escargots are very, very bad, but good escargots? Well, good escargots are worth a plane trip. Vertige in Montreal is where to fly.

Nothing says "French" quite like flipping crepes. Well, maybe the Eiffel Tower, but I was in Quebec City, not Paris, and wanted to feed the fantasy that I was, in fact, across the Atlantic. Casse-Crêpe Breton beckoned on a snowy day at lunchtime with low prices ($8 or less for crepes) and a warm, crowded interior.

Part of travel is about eating the foods that the locals eat. But that's become more and more difficult, of course, with the same generic chains serving up regulated slop from Beijing to Barcelona. While on a recent trip to Quebec, though I made an important discovery: Evidently the odder the food item, the stronger the possibility it won't be replaced by an assembly line Quarter Pounder.

If you’re traipsing through old Montreal at lunchtime, don’t miss out on the buzzing, crowded Olive et Gourmando. If you can, get there about five minutes before noon and snag one of the last remaining tables, otherwise you’ll line up with local workers and other travelers, and have to salivate over the pastries on display up front.
