Google is a Travel Agent
Since Google is the all knowing and all powerful master of our domain, we figured it was time to use her algorithmic powers to answer all of our travel questions.
We asked our new travel agent to find us the loneliest place on earth--figuring some alone time can do everyone a bit of good.
Google spit a bunch of plausible destinations: the Antarctic coast, Dublin (Bono would be so hurt), Death Valley and Fort Wayne Indiana. However, the lonely Google suggestion that caught our eye was Easter Island.
Seeing that Easter Island is a five hour plane ride from Santiago Chile and an 5.5 hour plane ride from Tahiti, two somewhat out of the way places in their own right, depending on your home base, we would say Easter Island is more than qualified to serve as the loneliest destination in the world.
On Easter Island you will escape cell phones, the web, and see nothing but ocean for miles and miles on all sides, but still be able to eat a good tuna sandwich, drink a Pisco sour, and listen to live music at Te Moana:
Quite possibly the best restaurant on the island. The Tuna Sandwich is particularly good. A live band is often playing on Wednesdays and the weekends. Get to Te Moana early or it is likely that you will not get a table.
Contrast is king.
