Motown And The Steel City Hit The Ice For The Stanley Cup

June 4, 2009 at 1:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Stanley Cup Finals are in full swing this week, as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings hit the ice to battle for one of the sporting world’s most famous trophies. The Penguins may have next generation stars like Sidney Crosby, but the Red Wings know what they are doing and handed the Penguins a defeat in last year’s finals.

Both cities follow their teams closely, so most eyes will be focused on the ice. However, if you feel the need to wander, here’s what each arena has to offer for those less interested in the game.

Detroit Metro Airport Might Be the Best Thing About Detroit

April 8, 2009 at 4:01 PM | by | Comments (3)

Is it spring yet? With snow beating down on the tarmac yesterday at Detroit Metro Airport, we're extremely sad to say that Punxsutawney Phil was right again. Nothing is more depressing than agreeing with a groundhog on the weather.

Good Fare: In the Catbird Seat

Jaunted Good Fare: St. Louis-Detroit, $123 RT

Fares that hover in the hundred dollar range are almost always worth exploring; it's about as cheap as things get here in the US. In honor of their mention on KSDK St. Louis, Airfare Watchdog ran a whole host of fares from the Gateway to the Midwest, one of which caught our eye.

A few carriers are matching Southwest's $49 OW (it works out to about $123 RT) fare between St. Louis and Detroit. Thanks to the miracle of inter-league play and new baseball stadiums in St. Louis and Detroit, we'd recommend looking at the weekend of June 23rd. (Northwest still has fares available) That's when the Cardinals will head to Detroit to play the Tigers, who are surprisingly good this year.

No guarantees that it the streak will last until late June.  Otherwise, Motor City denizens might want to check out the Cardinals new home. It looks pretty sweet to us.
