Food Worth Flying For: The Best Apple Cake in All of Amsterdam

That croissant in Paris. The char kway teow in Singapore. That cup of hot chocolate in Perugia. This is Food Worth Flying For. In this new series, Jaunted's contributors share the foods they'd gladly fly around the world for (and probably already have).

Don't hate, but we kinda used to have a thing for the cold apple cake with vanilla sauce found in every IKEA cafeteria, no matter the country. It's not a very original preference, especially considering we live in the land of all-American apple pie. Then we went to Amsterdam and everything changed.

Dutch Klassieke Appeltaart is something different; it's a deep-dish slice piled high with more cooked crisp apple slices and less sugary apple glop, encased in a generous crust of brown crumbliness yumminess.

Amsterdam is famous for its Appeltaart (reimagined in US cuisine as Dutch Apple Pie), and the small restaurant Winkel 43 renowned for its own recipe.

Only in South Florida: Starbucks' Special Latin-American Food Menu

Perhaps it's the imminent arrival of winter or maybe just the fact that Florida is fun, but we've had a good time rounding out what we're calling Florida Week. But all of this sun, sand and surf got us a little tired, so we popped into a Starbucks for a pick-me-up in between our gondola ride and some beach time in Fort Lauderdale.

While most Starbucks locations around the US are in full pumpkin scone mode, select shops in Florida are offering a menu with a little Latin flare. Nestled in the chilled case, next to yogurt parfaits and sandwiches, sat a sign that read 'Sabores Tradicionales' ("traditional flavors"). In South Florida, where the community is well over the 20% Hispanic makeup of the whole state, it makes perfect sense to offer a menu of Latin-American favorites.

Cookies on a Plane: Which Airlines Still Bake Treats Onboard

Even More In-Flight Ice Cream from Japan Airlines

Last week, we might have screamed for ice cream a little too soon, because we just found another airline serving up the frozen goodness in the sky. Add Japan Airlines to the list of carriers taking their in-flight ice cream pretty seriously.

Flying can be exhausting, even if your itinerary involves lie-flat seats in the front of the plane. As such, you can imagine our jubilation when we passed by a low freezer case filled with creamy gelato goodness during some downtime in Qantas' Business Class lounge at Sydney International.

Along with the standard free-pouring champagne, hot dinner and bountiful desserts, the Red Roo's lounge serves up the icy treat for passengers traveling on international flights in Business Class (or holding Oneworld Sapphire status). Ice cream is a lovely little luxury, perfect to be present in a lounge for a level of luxury travel.

Street Food Friday: Kueh, the Sweet Treats of Singapore

In a new weekly Friday column, we'll explore street food and other culinary specialties from around the world.

Last week we brought you the traditional delicacies of Vietnam and, this week, we skip to another part of Southeast Asia for the colorful treats of Singapore. Kueh, as they're called, are not specific to Singapore; these tiny desserts can be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Southern China, but each country twists the basics into their own recipes.

Kueh (or kuih and kue) is really just a broad term signifying small cakes, cookies, dumplings, pudding, biscuit, or pastries made from rice or glutinous rice. Like most kueh, the Singaporean variety comes with no specific or authentic recipe since most of the methods have been handed down from generation to generation, creating a unique taste from color to color. Traditionally handmade for special events like Hari Raya and Lunar New Year, kueh is sold in food hawker stalls all year round.

Where to Purchase the Best Polish Pastries for PaÁzki Day

Tomorrow is Fat Tuesday, aka the last day before Lent, and a time to fill your bellies in the spirit of final excess. For anyone of Polish heritage, however, the last Tuesday before these few weeks of going without is considered PaÁzki Day. This holiday celebrates deep-fried goodness filled with fruit preserves (traditionally: prune, apricot, raspberry, cheese or custard) and topped with powdered sugar or glazed.

The traditional reason for making paÁzki (pronounced: poonch-key) was to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, since those were forbidden to consume during Lent. What better way to empty the house of the food you can't eat but to use it all to make a delicious little doughnut? Traditionally eaten on Fat Thursday (the Thursday before Ash Wednesday), the treat has since taken over Mardi Gras.
