JetBlue Will Give You $50. (There's a Catch.)

5/08/2008 at 4:00 PM
Tags: , , , , , (all tags)

We're no strangers to weird airfare deals, but the latest offer from JetBlue is quite curious. If you book a ticket for yourself by May 16 for travel before June 11, you'll get a $50 voucher for use later this fall, between September 3 and October 31.

The first catch is that you have to sign up for the airline's loyalty program to get your credit. Also, by giving away a voucher for the future instead of an immediate $50 off, the airline saves itself a bunch of money: You know some people are gonna either forget about their vouchers or not be able to use them when the time comes.

JetBlue has also crafted a rule to protect some of its business travel revenue. You have to book your own tickets in order to claim the $50, so you won't be seeing a voucher if your boss or secretary does your travel planning.

Still, if your travel plans sync up, you'll save some cash if you book by next Friday. Nothing curious about that.

Airport WiFi: Boingo Giving You 15 Minutes Free

Big-time WiFi contractor Boingo, which handles net access at heaps of airports around the world, is now offering iPhone and iPod Touch users 15 minutes of free access at 28 of its US, Canadian and UK airports. The promo is currently only for Apple users, but the company plans to expand the free 15 minutes to Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Windows Mobile users soon.

What's the catch? Not much of one: You'll just see a 15-second ad before you're free to surf. Boingo is ramping up its mobile offerings, and the promo gives the company a chance to do a little market research. In our view, it's win-win.

In the UK, you can jump online at London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted as well as at Edinburgh Airport and a couple others. In North America, there are a couple dozen airports in on the promo, with BWI, HOU, IAH, JFK, LGA, ORD and YYZ among them.

Adventures of Link: Ice Cream Dreams

Still stuck at your desk, huh? You deserve an ice cream cone, the kind that Baskin-Robbins is scooping for 31 cents until 10 pm tonight.

The original store opened in Glendale, California in 1945 and was called Snowbird. Though there are plenty of shops in the US these days, there are also tons of them worldwide. (Japan alone has more than 850.)

We don't normally go for chains 'round here, but, hey, cheap ice cream. And aren't you sick of Pinkberry by now?

Aperitivo Travel: How Italians Do Happy Hour

Where: Italy

4/24/2008 at 9:30 AM
Tags: , , , , (all tags)

Northern Italy's recipe for happy hour has us wondering how we ever coped with deep-fried Buffalo Wings and 2-for-1 Buds. Here's how to aperitivo: Go to an Italian lounge or restaurant at about 6 pm and pay the cashier $8-$12, depending on how posh the place. You get a ticket good for any drink, but wine and beverages like Campari or Martini are much preferred over brewskies.

For the cost of one drink you get snacks, cheeses, meats, breads and often a full buffet of hot dishes. Seconds and thirds are acceptable so, in essence, it's dinner. The absence of bikini-clad bartenders, Beirut tables and Big Buck Hunter make for a, dare we say, civilized social hour that will leave you satisfied--and with some euros to spare.

A few discerning New York restaurateurs also like the idea of aperitivo. On weekday afternoons, Aroma Kitchen and Wine Bar (36 E. 4th St.) has three wine tastes and a fresh and seasonal array of antipasti for an affordable $15 . At Piola (48 E. 12th St.), free pizza and appetizers come with the discounted Italian and South American cocktails during happy hour. And Dell'Anima (38 Eighth Ave.) also does an aperitivo al italiano.

First Person Bus Reviews: BoltBus

4/23/2008 at 10:15 AM
Tags: , , , , , , (all tags)

The much-hyped BoltBus starts its Boston service tomorrow, and in advance of the debut, the Boston Globe has a lengthy story about what makes the cheapo bus line worth riding.

Reporter Nicole Wong, who hated on Skybus in February, notes the similarities between the 'buses:

BoltBus said it got the idea of offering at least one seat per bus for a buck from Skybus, which priced at least 10 seats per plane for $10 until it went bankrupt and shut down this month. BoltBus doesn't view Skybus's demise as a warning...All 51 seats on all 12 daily buses scheduled through Sunday will cost $1 each, plus a 50 cent online booking fee.

Though the tickets are cheap, the service isn't, says BoltBus honcho David Hall. The company's flashy coaches feature an on-board safety video and toilets that actually flush with "blue swirly chemicals" and boarding is handled Southwest Airlines-style in groups.

All that said, early reviews have been mixed.

Hotels Offering Discounts for Stranded Travelers

4/14/2008 at 4:35 PM
Tags: , , (all tags)

We're living in some crazy travel times these days. LCCs are going bankrupt left and right, and bigger airlines are getting grounded for FAA-implemented safety checks. And don't forget about other airline nightmares, like waiting on a tarmac for 8 hours. Just because you book a flight, there's a real chance that you won't get to your final destination in one shot.

Which is why some thoughtful hotels are helping to ease the travel pain (and, you know, send some cash their way as well.) These deals aren't the greatest in terms of flexibility and most of them are at Marriotts, but you may want to make note of these before you head out to catch your next plane.

One last tip: If you see something you like, we suggest calling the hotel and talking to a live human being to get the most out of these offerings.

American Hoping to Woo Jaded Fliers with Low Fares

4/14/2008 at 10:06 AM
Tags: , , , , (all tags)

Cancellations? What Cancellations? American Airlines wants you to forget all those troubles and get down to Latin America and the Caribbean on the cheap.

The current promo is for tickets out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale, but those cities are easy enough to reach on either AA or the low cost carrier of your choice. Once at MIA, we're talking round trip to Managua, Nicaragua for $289 all-in or flights from FLL to San Jose, Costa Rica for $260 all-in. Caribbean destinations include Santo Domingo, DR and Grand Cayman.

The bad news is that you'll have to buy your tix today; the sale ends at midnight. Of course the good news is that fares are dirt cheap.
