It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2012 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics. Needless to say, we're ready for 2013, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2012 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,or as we fondly refer to themThe Jauntys.
There are plenty of perks to being 007 - the cars, the women, and, of course, the travel. Star Daniel Craig took it all in stride this year as he crisscrossed the globe twice, once to film Skyfall, and then again to promote it.
In January, Craig began filming the latest James Bond flick in London, moving on to the Highlands of Scotland, but not before having a drink with George Clooney.

What's the oldest flying DC-10 airplane up to these days? The answer: it's the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, completely reconfigured (see below) to be a learning center for opthamologists in the developing world and a temporary medical center for those in need, wherever Orbis flies. Even the guys in the cockpit are volunteer pilots.
What's Daniel Craig (aka the newest James Bond) name as his charity of choice? The answer: you guessed itthe Orbis Flying Eye Hospital.
The two have been working for a couple years now, raising the funds necessary for the DC-10 to get its jetfuel and get across the clouds to places like Ulanbaatar, Mongolia, where Craig came together with the crew to shoot an informative and touching mini-documentary (embedded below).
Daniel Craig didn't have to go far to find his new Bond girl. The actor and his Dream House co-star, Rachel Weisz, went public with their relationship over the weekend when they appeared strolling hand in hand in the Dorset, England countryside.
The new couple spent Christmas together in a £1,000-a-week cottage hideaway. On Friday they were spotted holding hands while on a 2-mile walk into town where they stopped at a local deli for a newspaper and then headed into a small Edwardian-style pub. A fellow pub patron said, "They were clinging to each other like honeymooners. The chemistry was obvious."
For the past month or so, Daniel Craig has been in Toronto working on his latest film, Dream House. The movie, which co-stars Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts, is about a family that learns of a brutal crime committed against the former residents of their new home.
The "dream house" in the movie has been built in Gairloch Gardens in Oakville, Ontario. Thanks to an unseasonably warm winter, the crew had to spray fake snow on the house and surrounding land to make it look like a winter wonderland. Daniel Craig will return to Gairloch Gardens on March 19 and is expected to spend four or five days there shooting the movie's final scenes. Oakville has been buzzing over its brush with fame, and what exactly will come of that house they've built. The latest rumor is that they're going to burn the whole thing down when they're done filming, while others say that is actually how the movie ends and the house will be destroyed as part of the shoot.
Today, the cast, crew and their fake snow have been spotted at the VIA station in Guelph, ON. VIA Rail Canada offers service from points throughout the country, and as flying becomes more of a hassle, many are are taking advantage of their extensive routes. You can travel on the same train, in a sleeper car, from Vancouver to Toronto for about the cost of a plane ticket, and get to see the countryside while you're at it. Schedules and pricing are available at Via Rail.ca.

Having trouble distinguishing between movies and plays? In a movie, the characters don't berate you if your cell phone goes off, as one Broadway audience member found out this week while watching Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig tread the boards together.
Jackman and Craig are currently starring in "A Steady Rain," a Chicago-imported drama about two cops who get into some off-duty trouble. Last Wednesday, they didn't even break accent (Jackman's is better, for the record) to call out an etiquette-challenged patron who didn't turn off a ringing cell phone (which proceeded to go off again). Thanks to TMZ, you can watch the video here, and we beg you, do not be that guy. Or, for that matter, the guy videotaping an entire show from his seatthis isn't U2 at Giants Stadium!
Award Show Travel / Grammy Awards / Gwyneth Paltrow / Angelina Jolie / Kate Winslet / Daniel Craig / → All Tags
A host of award shows brought some celebrities out, but not all of them: Gwyneth Paltrow attended the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in a sparkly Burberry number to support husband Chris Martin, whose band Coldplay performed
with the backing of a marching band; Katy Perry, who was up for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (but lost to British singer Adele), performed in a Carmen Miranda-esque fruit ensemble.
Kate Winslet picked up a statue for Best Leading actress at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) in London, for which she was nominated both for her role in "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road." She posed on the red carpet with presenter Daniel Craig. Less than two weeks till the Oscars! And speaking of the Oscars, Jessica Biel appeared in Oscar de la Renta at the Academy Awards' Scientific and Technical Awards Saturday night to give out all the little gold men that don't fit into the telecast.
But award shows aren't always the trip worth taking: Angelina Jolie arrived at the BAFTAs after a visit to a refugee camp in Thailand for cyclone victims from Myanmar, proving she still thinks some things are important than her career. (She and fellow Super World Traveler Brad Pitt were both up for leading awards; Jolie lost to Winslet, above, while Pitt lost to Mickey Rourke.) And last year's Grammy darling Amy Winehouse, who performed via satellite when she was not granted a visa to travel to L.A. for the ceremony, skipped the festivities altogether: Rumor has it she is staying in Jamaica to record her third album within reach of, uh, "inspirations." Well, there's always next year.
Just passing the torch! Current Bond Daniel Craig and heartthrob of moms everywhere Richard Gere have a man-to-man talk in the hottest celebrity vacation spot of this winter, St. Barts. Beyonce and Jay-Z were recently spotted there as well as Mariah Carey, Eddie Murphy and Jon Bon Jovi.
Gere and Craig may be sittin' pretty right now, but let's hope neither of them owns the boat they're on. The yacht industry slump began in December 2007, before most of us were acquainted with the R-word, making it difficult for owners to sell the boats they have. Since many boat buyers are upgrading from their previous boats, any downturn in price leads to a downturn in sales, and a vicious circle ensues. Even the luxury travel market isn't completely recession proof: By April yacht sales in the $200,000 to $800,000 range were already down 50 percent.
On the other hand, it's a great time to pick up a luxury yacht, in case you have a chunk of change sitting around. But what if next year's hot vacation spot is landlocked?

These waves have been shaken, not stirred: Current James Bond, Daniel Craig, and girlfriend splashed about in St. Bart's over the weekend. They were later spotted kissing on the beach--as long as they don't try that in Dubai!
Craig does have some time off as the sequel to this fall's "Quantum of Solace" hasn't even been written yet. Internet rumor has it the next flick, the 23rd Bond picture, will be filmed at least partly in New York City, with outlaw Camille Montes (Olga Kurylenko) to return. Bond goes even more Bourne? Only 2009 will tell us for sure.

Our favorite sexy British spy returns to the big screen today, and we can't wait to see him again. "Quantum of Solace" brings back Daniel Craig as 007 and Judi Dench as "M," picking up where "Casino Royale" left off, right after James lost Vesper. Having captured Mr. White, Bond and "M" discover (of course) that the enemy organization they're dealing with is far more dangerous and complex than they'd originally thought.
Evidence links a traitor in MI6 to a mysterious bank account in Haiti where Bond meets the stunning Camille. She has her own agenda but leads him to villain Dominic Greene, a "ruthless businessman" who is about to make a deal to take control of the water supply in Bolivia. All in a day's work for Bond...
This adventure actually takes place all over, from Austria to Italy to Panama, but we invite you to read on for some great things to check out in one of its key filming locations: Chile.
Slip the name James Bond into anything touristy and we will be there like a shot. It's embarrassing but true, and the latest Bond-related place of interest is the Bodyflight indoor skydiving facility in Bedford, England.
Two things: First up, some of the scenes from the "Quantum of Solace" Bond movie were filmed here so you, too, can fly in the same wind tunnel that Daniel Craig did.
And second: you can go one step further than Craig, because they're about to open a new ride called Bodyflight Vertigo. It's a 120-foot jump, the tallest in Britain, and you're free-falling for two thirds of the way. This pleasure (or terror) will only cost you £30 (US$57) or you can combine it with a trip through the wind tunnel for some simulated skydiving. The fun kicks off in September, two months before the new Bond movie hits theaters.

If an Aston Martin goes soaring over a cliff and plunges into a lake, one would naturally expect James Bond to bubble up, his tux, miraculously dry and toting a Nalgene of martinis. Sadly, that's not what happened when a stunt man had a mishap with the new, one-of-a-kind Bond car in northern Italy.
The driver is in stable condition after the Aston Martin slid off the road and into Lake Garda, falling 180 feet in the process.
The car is irreplaceable, just like Daniel Craig, but we're willing to lend Bond our 1992 Land Cruiser as long as he returns it with the tank full. Those cars never really blow up, right? The production has already shot in Spain, Mexico, Panama and Chile.
