Everything's Bigger in Texas, Including Dallas' New Ferris Wheel

October 27, 2011 at 9:31 AM | by | Comment (1)

There’s a new tourist attraction headed to Big D, and it might just change the city’s skyline. Great City Attractions has been chatting up the city about installing a giant Ferris wheel in downtown Dallas, around the intersection of Houston and Elm streets—that’s in Founders Plaza for those who call the city home.

Right now it sounds like things are very much still on the drawing board. However, Texas has quite the reputation for going big or going home, so we think as long as the pricing is right it’s practically a sure thing. The wheel could be as high as 200-feet tall, and apparently may be ready to go in around ten days or so once approval is granted. The Ferris wheel at the state fair—that’s the one in our picture—already soars to around the same height.

Proof That Dallas-Love Airport Loves Your Doggy

September 9, 2011 at 10:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Happy Friday! Finally, right? It's been a long week, but you're mere hours from the weekend and thus, we thought it proper to celebrate by pointing out that even airports like to have a little fun.

We're specifically thinking of Dallas-Love Field—total Southwest Airlines turf—and their outdoor "dog rest areas." You know what we're talking about—the little plots designated as places for your pets to do their business before and/or after flights.

A friend of Jaunted recently spotted one such area at DAL, complete with the cheeky sign above. For pet owners traveling with their best furry friends, taking a flight isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, and a little injection of humor such as this can go a long way to diffuse the anxiety.

Where to Celebrate the Mavericks' NBA Championship Win in Dallas Tomorrow

June 15, 2011 at 8:50 AM | by | Comments (0)

Congratulations to the Dallas Mavericks on becoming this year’s NBA champions after they won game six Sunday evening in South Florida against the Miami Heat. The team has already been out partying and celebrating in South Beach—apparently living it up at LIV nightclub at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Which is a little funny—if we do say so ourselves—because that’s where LeBron James’ mom got arrested just a few months ago for slapping a valet (guess that means no tip!)

The team is now back in Big D and is getting ready to celebrate with the city this Thursday. Of course there’s going to be a parade—and probably more—and we’re expecting quite a celebration since owner Mark Cuban is paying for the whole shindig. Expect everyone from Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki to the city’s mayor to be in attendance.

America's Unhealthiest Restaurant Brings Its 8,000-Calorie Burgers to Texas

May 17, 2011 at 9:02 AM | by | Comments (0)

Remember the fresh smell of spring 2010, when KFC began cooking up Double Down sandwiches around the country and patriotic Americans dutifully gassed up their cars and drove over to sink their teeth into greasy fried chicken on top of cheese on top of greasy fried chicken? Yea, that sure was an interesting time, when the country went wild for calories instead of against them.

Unfortunately this seems to be an annual occurrence, as this spring's big fat (literally fat) news is that Chandler, Arizona's obesity-theme restaurant Heart Attack Grill is expanding to open a second location. Anyone want to guess where? Yep—Texas. The second-ever Heart Attack Grill will open in downtown Dallas, Texas this Friday, selling their famous "Quadruple Bypass Burger" and neverending helpings of "Flatline Fries." By the way, the restaurant's tagline is "a taste worth dying for" and that burger? It's 8,000 calories.

Can't Get Into a Super Bowl Party? Just Check Out the NFL Experience

February 4, 2011 at 12:20 PM | by | Comments (0)

If you don’t have Super Bowl tickets at this point you might as well accept that you’ll be watching the game on TV. However, if you made it to the Dallas area—or just live there—there’s still plenty of other stuff to do before heading to Hooters to watch this year’s big game.

Every year the Super Bowl becomes a bigger and bigger entertainment event, and this year is no exception. The NFL brings way more than just the Packers and Steelers into town, and for 2011 the NFL Experience makes its return for its 19th edition of bringing fans and football together adjacent to all the Super Bowl hoopla.

How to Follow the Pittsburgh Steelers Off to Super Bowl XLV

January 25, 2011 at 11:13 AM | by | Comments (0)

Yesterday we revealed all the secrets to hanging out with the Green Bay Packers before this year’s Super Bowl, and today we want to talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers. After disappointing Jets fans across the country, the team is looking forward to heading to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and their attempt to win the NFL’s biggest game for a record seventh time.

One of the best ways to follow the Steelers down to Texas this year might be with Delta, as the airline has added some Super Bowl-specific, non-stop flights between the Steel City and Dallas. Delta is starting up three flights during the first weekend of February. There will be two flights during the morning of February 4—one is a regional jet and the other a 757—and there will be another plane heading into Pittsburgh.

How and Where to See the Green Bay Packers Off to Super Bowl XLV

January 24, 2011 at 9:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

In case you weren’t glued to the television and snacks yesterday, the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears and will be representing the NFC in this year’s Super Bowl down in Arlington, Texas. Packers fans are known for the dedication to the team—as well as their hats made of cheese—so we know they’re already planning a way to get to this year’s big game on February 6.

The players and coaches returned to the Green Bay area last night to a crowd of thousands at Austin Straubel Airport, and you might just want to get ready to welcome them home as champions if things go their way. The airport’s Facebook page is pretty good about sending out information as well as updates on the team’s wins, so you might be able to be on hand to give the team a warm send off to Texas in case you can’t make it down for the game. Teams need to be in North Texas the afternoon of January 31, so start looking for a good short-term parking spot now.

Jetsetter Can Help You Get To This Year's Super Bowl

January 5, 2011 at 8:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

The NFL playoff picture has now been figured out, and it’s only about one month until the Super Bowl hits Dallas—well, Arlington—on February 6. Expect the biggest Super Bowl to date, simply because the new Cowboys Stadium is so freaking huge and extravagant. Even if your team failed to make it too far this season, if you’ve always wanted to attend the big game this year might be the best year to do so.

Tickets have been long sold out along with many of the local accommodations, but there’s always plenty of travel packages where you can still score swanky lodging and seats at the 50-yard line. Jetsetter’s football package definitely caught our eye, and it will probably catch yours as well as long as you a wallet deep enough to pay for it.

Attention Texans: Win Party Passes and RT Tickets from Virgin America

November 18, 2010 at 1:24 PM | by | ()

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU.

Attention residents of the Lone Star state, but more specifically those of you in DALLAS: On December 1, the airline of mood lighting, cocktails and in-flight WiFi is landing at DFW for the first time. That's right, Virgin America is coming, with routes from LA and SF, and they're throwing a huge party at the Opera House, with Richard Branson, a performance by LMFAO and a "smoking" secret legendary musician.

But wait, there's more: We're giving away two VIP tickets to the party and two tickets for main cabin roundtrip flights on Virgin America! The flights can be used anytime through 2011 with a 21-day advance purchase and the exception of a few blackout dates. Therefore we need a winner from the Dallas area, who can make it to the party on December 1.

Texas might have been having a bad sports year, losing the World Series and watching the Cowboys bumble around the football field, but it is all coming back around with this give-away.

Here's how to win...

How to Be a Volunteer at Super Bowl XLV

November 3, 2010 at 1:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

Now that the San Francisco Giants have won the World Series, its time to start thinking about the sporting world's next big event—the Super Bowl. Tickets to the Super Bowl may be hard to get, but there are still plenty of ways to participate in the action by volunteering.

Next year's game will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX on February 6, and organizers are anticipating they will need at least 10,000 volunteers to keep the event running smoothly. Volunteers will be needed to greet fans at the airport, pass out welcome bags at hotels and staff events for Super Bowl XLV.

Dallas Zoo's New Africa Exhibit is Frankly Pretty Impressive

June 29, 2010 at 3:29 PM | by | Comments (0)

It was a busy June at the Dallas Zoo, where the May 28 opening of the Giants of the Savanna habitat led to skyrocketing attendance and forced the zoo to extend their hours. The 11 acre section is just the latest addition to the 122 year old zoo, which itself covers over 100 acres. Now that things have calmed down a little bit, it's the perfect time to see the new exhibit, which brought more than 40,000 people to the zoological park in one month.

You can take a virtual tour of the entire exhibit here, via a fairly impressive animated video. During the tour you'll get to see how they've divided up the exhibits of various African animals - giraffes, lions, elephants, and so on. If you look very closely next to the giraffes you'll see a kind of balcony, which is the new feeding station. Visitors have the opportunity to climb up there and feed the giraffes lettuce leaves, which can be purchased on the spot.

Are You Ready For Some Football? Tour The New Home Of The Dallas Cowboys

December 1, 2009 at 11:36 AM | by | Comment (1)

While we were resting on the couch after eating ourselves into a food coma on Thanksgiving, we couldn’t help but gaze in amazement at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. If taking in the glory of Cowboys Stadium from the comfort of your living room isn’t good enough, then make for the Lone Star state since there are tours available. It’s only $15 per person—way cheaper than tickets to a game—and they’re available most days of the week.

The tour reveals the secrets behind the press box, player interview rooms, and even the team locker room. The whole things lasts about an hour, so you’re sure to get a decent behind-the-scenes look at what makes the huge shrine to football tick. Visits to the fancy seating level and even a suite will show you how the other half of football fans live. There’s even a stop in the control room for the massive scoreboard and video monitor—it’s the largest high-definition screen in the world. Hopefully we won't see ourselves on the big screen; that would be a little too much.
