Don't Wish You Were Here: Copenhagen's Assistens Cemetery
What do Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, and Nobel Prize winning scientist Niels Bohr have in common? They've all taken up a final resting place at Copenhagen's Assistens Cemetery, a lush and serene plot of land in the city's Nørrebro neighborhood. Thanatourists among you will, without a doubt, appreciate the cultural significancy of a visit to Assistens, but even those who lack interest in the great beyond will find solace in its green and leafy surroundings.

To Kronborg or Not to Kronborg? That is the Copenhagen Castle Question.

This week, Jaunted contributor Heidi Atwal will guide you through a series of food and shopping-rich travels through Copenhagen, a quaint European city trafficked by many a bike and artsy hipster. Stay tuned for suggestions on where to eat, hang, drink, and what to see in the city.
Provided that I'd recently seen a staging of Hamlet at London's Globe Theater, it's appropriate that my recent jaunt to Copenhagen concluded with a trip to Kronborg Castle, the supposed site of the Bard's famous work.
Located in Helsingør, approximately a 35-minute train ride outside of the city, the castle is quite easy to get to from Copenhagen's central station, though the journey itself doesn't afford particularly pretty scenery. (The seaside is mainly obscured by shrubbery en route.)

Copenhagen's Hyper-Cool Coffee Shop 'Coffee Collective' is for Caffeine Connoisseurs

Where the magic happens: the on-site roaster
This week, Jaunted contributor Heidi Atwal will guide you through a series of food and shopping-rich travels through Copenhagen, a quaint European city trafficked by many a bike and artsy hipster. Stay tuned for suggestions on where to eat, hang, drink, and what to see in the city.
My trip to Copenhagen was largely informed by the insider knowledge of a gracious host who literally pulled out a map of the city upon my arrival, then proceeded to circle and scrawl the names of his favorite food and shopping haunts upon it. This quintessentially cool, moustachioed local shared secrets that no run-of-the-mill guidebook would impart, his word as good as travel gold.
So, when he stated with complete conviction that Coffee Collective, a micro roastery located on Jægersborggade, served "easily Copenhagen's best coffee," my mission was clear: visit and adequately caffeinate at CC by trip's end. And caffeinate I did, stopping by for a black Amerikano on a brief break from trolling for fashion and art finds in Jægersborggade's many boutiques.

Europe's Longest Shopping Street Finds Competition in Copenhagen's Jægersborggade

Copenhagen's bounty of design shops, throngs of sharply dressed denizens cycling along city streets, and photographic evidence captured on CPH-centric blog The Locals point toward a simple fact: Danes live, breathe and bleed style. Designers like Henrik Vibskov and Malene Birger have attracted attention to Denmark's ever-expanding fashion industry, while guidebooks direct the retail hungry toward Strøget, Europe's longest pedestrian shopping thoroughfare.

Copenhagen is home to Noma, currently reigning supreme as the World's Best Restaurant for the second consecutive year. Noma's accolades have heightened the prominence of Nordic cuisine, which is being exported and ravenously explored by foodies the world over.
For all the innovations Noma's elegant, avant garde fare has offered to the culinary world, the city's best food is simply prepared with locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. No fuss, no foam, just lush yet unpretentious dishes. No meal exemplifies this ethos more than brunch, enjoyed by locals on the occasional weekday as well as weekends.

Wish You Were Here: Nyhavn Waterfront, Copenhagen
This week, Jaunted contributor Heidi Atwal will guide you through a series of food and shopping-rich travels through Copenhagen, a quaint European city trafficked by bikes mounted by arty hipsters. Stay tuned for suggestions on where to eat, hang, drink and what to see in the city.
Copenhagen's picturesque waterfront is the stuff postcards are made of. Lining the Nyhavn canal are buildings painted in bright hues, along with a string of tourist-clogged restaurants with umbrella awnings, beer-supping customers and a constant flow of seafood dishes streaming from their kitchens. It is often Stop Number One for out-of-towners, listed as a "Must See" in many a guidebook and affording a romantic photo op for the snap-happy.

Kiefer Sutherland Shows Off His Mankini in Copenhagen
Kiefer Sutherland might be done with Jack Bauer, but he still has a few tricks up his sleevesor under his shorts. Kiefer was spotted sunbathing at Ofelia Beach in Copenhagen earlier this week in a skimpy mankini. The 24 actor chatted with a few locals and smoked a cigarette before laying out in his super short swim trunks.
And yes, the fact that there is a beach in Copenhagen is even more shocking than the idea that Kiefer wore those shorts in public. Ofelia Beach is part of the Royal Danish Theatre's outdoor stage and lounge area on the Copenhagen Harbor. The outdoor venue, which is open through September 3rd, has become one of the most popular summer hang outs in the city.

Obama Gasses Up Air Force One For Visits To Oslo And Copenhagen
It hasn't even been a month yet since President Obama took Asia by storm, hitting up South Korea, China, and Japan, but already the traveler-in-chief is back onboard Air Force One for a quick trip to Scandinavia to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway and then address the climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Obama will arrive early tomorrow morning in Oslo, where he'll stop by Oslo City Hall for the ceremony, but he'll miss the guided tour of the Nobel Peace Centre in favor of getting over jetlag at the city's Grand Hotel. This is notable because the exhibition currently on display at the museum is about President Obama. He's effectively missing out on his own party. But with good reason...

The 'O Team' Heads To Copenhagen To Push 'Chicago 2016'
Tomorrow is the big day! On October 2, the Olympic Committee will announce the host city for the 2016 Olympics, and it's a hot race right down to the last minute for finalist cities Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, and Madrid. These final 24 hours have been particularly important to the decision-making process, as each city flew their star-power spokespeople to Copenhagen, Denmark to make final pleas before the Committee.
While soccer star Pelé did what he could for Rio's case, Chicago's representation was a bit more impressive with both Oprah and Michelle Obama stepping up to the podium to pitch The Windy City. Oprah might rule it these days, you see, but Michelle was born there and remains a Second City gal, even if her residence is now the White House.

Beer Festival Travel: Beer-Drinking Horses in Copenhagen
Beer lovers who missed out on the world's biggest pub crawl in Australia last weekend can take heart: You just need a ticket to Copenhagen for September.
The European Beer Festival 2008 will take place in the Danish capital September 12-14. The PR people say it's for "discriminating beer connoisseurs" but we're sure you don't have to belong to the toffee-nosed beer-sniffing set to enjoy a beer festival.
This one sounds particularly fun because it will be held in part of the Carlsberg breweries--very recently vacated as production is moving to another site. That means beer fest visitors can see some of the more private parts of the brewery, including the horse stables. Entry tickets include your first two beers and a detailed beer guide, if you want the low down on all the ale you're swilling.

Copenhagen Conquers Cuisine
Important news flash: Denmark is now serving more than just herring and pork! If, with good cause, you've thought Danish cuisine was one of the poorer exports of the country, you might be surprised on your next visit to Copenhagen, if the theory of a New York Times journalist is true.
After centuries of Danish food being about as bland and uninspiring as a long, sunshine-less winter day in Scandinavia, there's been a sudden revolution which even has Michelin stars starting to adorn the city's restaurants.
The only two-star restaurant, Noma, comes with hearty recommendations. Noma's current menu features a bunch of dishes we probably wouldn't order outside Denmark, but are nonetheless intriguing: Danish lobster with seaweed or musk ox and glazed beet roots, to name a couple. And for dessert, the apparently untranslatable Øllebrød and skyrsorbet. Yep, two of those, please.
