Hollywood's Sugary Side: The Waffle

Where: 6255 W. Sunset Blvd. [map], Hollywood, CA, United States, 90028

Hollywood has never been a favored foodie destination, mostly because it's hard to work up an appetite when all you see is super-skinny people eating tiny bites of sushi and Pinkberry. So last time we were there, we were pretty pleased to notice The Waffle, a hearty, oversized, gut-busting slice of Middle America plopped right into the middle of Sunset Boulevard.

The restaurant calls their crispy, deep-pocketed namesakes "Belgian waffles," but we're betting you'd be hard-pressed to find a brown sugar sticky bun waffle or baked-in smoked bacon waffle in Antwerp. Not that we're complaining. These super-rich treats are a pretty perfect way to soak up a late-night Hollywood bar crawl, considering the Waffle is open 'til 2am on weekdays and 4am on weekends. And if those options aren't intense enough for you, it's hard to go wrong with a giant waffle sundae.

In addition to all those waffles (and waffle fries), the restaurant makes a few nods to non-breakfast obsessives, with comfort food staples like meatloaf, chili mac and chicken pot pie. We'll report back about those if we can see over our mound of waffles next time.

A Little Jazz With That Baked Potato, Please

Where: 3787 Cahuenga Blvd West. [map], Studio City, CA, United States, 91604

Nothing gets us so riled up for eating between meals than running across ultra-focused comfort food restaurants that only serve one item. Our disappointment comes as no surprise then, when Totally Baked, Manhattan's only baked potato restaurant, closed its doors after just a few months last year. But we think we know where they went wrong — they overlooked the successful formula of potatoes + sour cream + jazz = success.

This time-honored formula works perfectly at the simply-named The Baked Potato, a spud-hawker cum jazz club in Los Angeles' Studio City. The restaurant features live music seven nights a week and serves up a full 20 varieties of baked potato, from teriyaki chicken to hot dog and sauerkraut. Less adventurous potatoheads can get a basic melted cheese version, but it will still come with a side of hot jazz.

It's even date-friendly! With the inclusion of two salads on the menu, The Baked Potato caters to all diets, but we suspect no one has ever made the mistake of ordering these.

All Mac-and-Cheese, All the Time

Where: 1030 N. American Street [map], Philadelphia, PA, United States, 19123

Here's a restaurant only the recession could create. Swallow Bistro opened a couple years back in Philadelphia's up-and-coming trendy neighborhood, Northern Liberties. But when the economy tanked last fall, the bistro's $15 entrees got a little hard for Philly diners to swallow, and the restaurant made a recession-era decision: they went all mac-and-cheese, all the time.

Yep, Swallow Bistro now exclusively serves this comfort food classic, made with your choice of cheeses, from good ol' American to foodie-r choices like gorgonzola or goat cheese, and topped with some pretty oddball options, like gyro meat, shrimp, and peas.

Some of that sounds a little kooky for us, but we could go for a bacon spinach and garlic plate, stat. Fortunately, you can design your own mac. Cheez fanatics can pair it with a side of nacho cheddar cheese fries, and if you're still craving comfort, there's brownie a la mode for dessert.
