All Points West Returns with Rock-Heavy Lineup, Chance to Volunteer for Free Tickets

July 21, 2009 at 1:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

One of the highlights of the summer music season, the All Points West Music & Arts Festival, will return to Liberty State Park in Jersey City (just across the river from Manhattan) on July 31, August 1 and August 2.

Following last year’s very successful Radiohead-led inaugural event, this year’s festival features Coldplay, MGMT, Vampire Weekend and Tool. Sadly, opening night headliners the Beastie Boys just pulled out of the show after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland.

As is the trend with these events, tickets for the three-day fest are a hefty $219, or $89 a day. APW does have a recession-era deal for you however, and it’s actually not a bad deal if you don’t mind hauling around some trash bags. Volunteer to work 15 hours over the course of the festival, and they’ll hook you up with a free three-day pass. If you think about the $219 cost of the ticket, that’s like getting paid $14.60 an hour, except you get paid in free music—a pretty good rate these days!

Concert Travel: We Found the VIPs in Coldplay's Fan Club

Where: 211 Stockwell Rd., London, United Kingdom

Among the cheering crowd at Coldplay's live gig at London's Brixton Academy (a live music venue, not a school) we saw two people who, if they aren't best friends already, should be: Jay-Z and Ricky Gervais. Both stood off to the side and watched the band run through new tracks from their latest album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends."

Longtime Coldplay or Carter/Gervais fans will know that both rapper and comedian have worked with Chris Martin, Jay on the 2006 song "Beach Chair" and Gervais on his TV show "Extras." But can Ricky rap? We wish we knew.

Didn't get into the exclusive gig? You can visit the BBC Television Studios in London six days a week for £9.50 a ticket (about $18), which gets you a guided tour and a peek into the studios. Pool party not included.
