Delta Needs You to Pick Their Next In-Flight Cocktail

September 22, 2010 at 1:39 PM | by | Comments (0)

We’ll freely admit that we have a little bit of an in-flight drinking problem. Sipping on an in-flight cocktail makes even the most cramped coach seat a little bit better, and things in the SkyMall catalog become great ideas for Christmas presents after one or three.

We’re always on the lookout for creative new ideas from the major airlines, and it looks like Delta has a whole bunch of new options to satisfy the thirst of everyone.

In-Flight Cocktail of the Month: Vodka Red Bull on Continental Airlines

July 2, 2010 at 8:35 AM | by | Comment (1)

Another month is here, and that means it’s time to reveal our pick for the in-flight cocktail of the month. In the past we’ve shared some more adventurous and unique options, but this month we’re going for a traditional recipe from Continental AirlinesRed Bull and Skyy Vodka.

Continental doesn’t have the fun factor of the Virgin Brands, so we think that this cocktail fits their style perfectly. The airline is all business, and this drink concoction has been around long enough to lose its trendy reputation. The energy drink Red Bull will be sold onboard for just $3, but when you pair it up with Skyy Vodka, you’re looking at a $9 cocktail. Not the best deal, but beverage options up in the air rarely are.

In-Flight Cocktail of the Month: Virgin Atlantic's Virgin Redhead

June 4, 2010 at 10:35 AM | by | Comment (1)

It’s getting pretty warm out, so we knew that this month’s airline cocktail had to be refreshing, colorful, and a little fruity. That’s why we chose a classic from Virgin AtlanticThe Virgin Redhead.

Available onboard selected Virgin Atlantic flights—of course it'll be easiest to order onboard their 747s with Upper Class bar—and within the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses around the world, the drink was created for the airline with the help of Bombay Sapphire.

Even if you aren’t a fan of gin, we’re thinking that this drink might just change your mind. The base of the drink is a combination of muddled raspberries, fresh lemon juice, cassis and framboise liqueurs. That mixture is then shaken—not stirred—with Bombay Sapphire Gin and topped off with champagne.

In-Flight Cocktail of the Month: Singapore Airlines' Singapore Sling

May 7, 2010 at 8:30 AM | by | Comment (1)

If we've learned anything from some of the best in-flight cocktails, it’s that there are plenty of airlines that take in-flight drinks pretty seriously. Singapore Airlines takes pride in pretty much all aspects of air travel, so it’s no surprise that they have a cocktail that’s worth the ticket price.

The Singapore Sling has been around since the early 1900s, originally appearing at the legendary Raffles Hotel, but over the years it's made its way to the airplane beverage cart. There are many variations on the original recipe, but if you find yourself up in the air we think the basic formula involves gin, cherry brandy, Cointreau, Grenadine, Angostura bitters, lime and pineapple juice. Just think of it as the grandfather of the Mai Tai, but with gin instead of rum.

Mile High Boozing: The Five Best In-Flight Cocktails

April 12, 2010 at 9:35 AM | by | Comments (8)

Flip through the back of any in-flight magazine and there’s quite a list of beverage options. We enjoy a soft drink with our peanuts, but sometimes we need just a little bit more—and we’re not talking about mixing ginger ale and cranberry juice. We’ve rounded up five of our favorite picks for in-flight cocktails, and hopefully they can serve as a replacement for in-flight entertainment on your next journey.

· Drinking Delta
The Mile High Mojito has gone the way of Northwest Airlines, but Delta still has a couple premier cocktails to add to your in-flight comfort. For $7, our pick is the "It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere." We like to believe flying is always a good time to drink regardless of the time, so this beverage just further enforces our bad behavior. The drink was actually cooked up by a Delta flight attendant, and it’s a mix of rum and orange juice with a splash of cranapple juice and garnished with a lime. It goes great with Biscoff cookies.

More shaken and stirred beverages after the break...

R.I.P. Red-Headed Slut: NYT Goes On a Bender

July 18, 2009 at 2:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

The latest issue of the New York Times's fancy T magazine is out this weekend, with trend-spotting stories on such destinations as Palm Springs and London, but I couldn't get past what it bills as the World's Biggest Bar Crawl. The story originates in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the annual Tales of the Cocktail convention had just ended with its traditional jazz funeral. In this case, the deceased wasn't a person, but a cocktail whose demise was to be celebrated in New Orleans fashion with a jazz band and revelers twirling parasols. After the Red-Headed Slut (Jaegermeister, peach-flavored schnapps and cranberry juice) was laid to rest, the author provided a very helpful list of bars around the world where you're unlikely to ever see her resurrection, or that of her cloying contemporary, the Apple Martini.

Prohibition Comes With A Free Drink At New York's City Museum

Where: 1000 5th Avenue. [map], New York, NY, United States, 10028
July 17, 2009 at 10:29 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Museum of the City of New York is serving up a special exhibit this summer that even the most fervent museum hater could hardly call boring.

The museum, conveniently located on 5th Avenue, just opened “Speakeasy 1220,” a look into the history of NYC's prohibition-era lounges, complete with a full bar. Although often overlooked by visitors in favor of the nearby Met and Museum of Natural History, the City Museum always offers unique, in-depth looks at local history, in this case an examination of the 32,000 underground watering holes that once dotted New York’s landscape.

The museum’s speakeasy skips the secret passwords and text messages that you might find at the faux-speakeasy bars downtown. Instead, this one is right out in the open, but offers a fun look at the music, cocktails, and history of the 1920’s. $10 admission includes a free drink. Come on, how can you not like a museum exhibit that comes with a free drink!

How to Chase the Green Fairy On Virgin America

May 19, 2009 at 5:08 PM | by | Comments (2)

A few weeks back we mentioned that Virgin America would be serving Le Tourment Vert absinthe drinks in the sky. A few days after that announcement, we found ourselves on a flight back from Seattle, pondering the purchase of said drink. But since we know our go-to drink, chardonnay, can do the job and do the job well, we decided to skip the absinthe. However, our row mate decided to splurge on not one, but two Le Tourment Vert absinthe drinks.

According to the RED ordering system, you can pick your mixer to go with the green absinthe which arrives in a small bottle with a cork stopper. However, Le Tourment Vert suggests mixing the drink with Sprite and garnishing with a lemon wedge.

While the drink is 100 proof and includes traditional ingredients like grand wormwood, star anise, fennel, sage and eucalyptus, it's not going to make you see things that aren't really there (as Oscar Wilde once said.) Then again, after downing his drinks, our row mate did hop onto the Virgin in-flight WiFi to begin cruising his eHarmony.com love matches. Ah, there's nothing like liquid courage.

Le Tourment Vert is served gratis in First Class and Main Cabin Select and is available for $8 in economy class.

Chase the Green Fairy Onboard Virgin America

May 1, 2009 at 1:57 PM | by | Comment (1)

In the wake of this alleged swine flu pandemic, is it such a good idea to drink something historically associated with hallucinations and ear cutting while at 40,000 feet?

Virgin America thinks so! They're serving Le Tourment Vert Absinthe Francaise "the first absinthe in the sky."

The Mile High Absinthe Cocktails will be listed on all Virgin American flight menus. The airline is even hosting a contest with Flavorpill to celebrate the Green Fairy in the Sky. Cheers to the lucky passengers who win two tickets on the airline.

To win, tweet @Flavorpill plus your chosen city within the Virgin America network and a reason you'd love to travel there. Remember to tag your tweet #LTVabsinthe. Winners are notified on May 15, 2009.

Isn't it comforting to know that the pilot and crew feel they can confidently fly the friendly skies while passengers potentially see the Green Fairy aboard their flights? Buckle up!
