Booking Flights for Coachella 2012: Yikes.

January 10, 2012 at 11:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

Without a doubt, the one huge travel story today is the scramble to plan for Coachella 2012, the music festival in the desert outside Palm Springs, CA. For the first time, the massive 3-day party will be split in two—two weekends, that is. If you can't make it April 13-15, there's now the option of catching the same acts, on the same stages, with a different crowd around you, on April 20-22.

Headliners of the fest are: The Black Keys, Radiohead and, most anticipated by far, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg who will close each weekend with a Sunday performance. Other acts due to hit the many stages include Bon Iver, Cat Power, The Arctic Monkeys, Feist, La Roux, Girl Talk, Santigold and really so many others we don't feel like typing them out. (But here's a Spotify playlist to get you in the mood).

Coachella Will Split in 2012 for Two Consecutive Weekend Festivals

June 2, 2011 at 2:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

We're of two minds about Coachella, which is terribly convenient since there will be two Coachella festivals in 2012. Great—we can spend the first one enjoying the music and the scene, and follow it by spending the second one hating on it and making snide remarks about the Urban Outfitters-wearing masses passed out next to half-spun Dreamcatchers. Two Coachella fests means more options for festivalgoers, with more money for musicians and the event's company, but will it be a good idea in practice?

Coachella has come to be known as the Woodstock of the Apple generation, even though more and more corporations have carved out a little piece for themselves in recent years (example: H&M has a huge tent with entire collection previews). A single festival means one focus, one big blowout, one long weekend of overpriced hotel rooms or house rental and hopefully only one vacation day requested off at work to attend.

$1,000 Per Person for a Private Jet to Coachella? Heck Yes.

April 5, 2011 at 3:30 PM | by | Comments (2)

Raise your wristbanded right hand if you're heading to Coachella from April 15-17! That's scary soon, and we know some of you haven't quite figured out how you're getting to the massive party music festival in Indio, California. Some will pile into minivans without A/C, many will fly in and rent cars only to leave them unused in the desert sun the whole weekend, and a few will be smart and go all out with a private jet.

We're all about private jets when the price isn't astronomical, and $1,000 per person round-trip sounds pretty alright. JetSuite is on the affordable end of private jet airlines, started by some of the same folks behind JetBlue. Instead of blue bubbles painted on the plane, however, JetSuite sports a snazzy red racing stripe on their shiny new Embraer Phenom 100s, with interiors designed by BMW.

When the Coachella lineup of heavies, like Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, the Strokes, Kanye West and Nas, was announced, many devoted Coachella fans probably scrambled to buy their tickets. Now it's all just a countdown until it's time to hit the desert. But if you want to rock to three days of live music, you gotta book your flight ASAP.

We did some digging and found several deals that will get to you the music festival, which takes place from April 15 to 17. The closest Coachella Valley airport is Palm Springs International Airport, which luckily does have a small amount of daily flights to manage the influx of travelers...somewhat.

Coachella 2011's Dates and Band Line-Up Have Hit the Net

January 19, 2011 at 9:26 AM | by | Comments (0)

We haven't even made it through SXSW yet and already the music and culture scene is a-buzz with another festival: Coachella. For the uninitiated, Coachella is a weekend-long music party in the desert, nearest the town of Indio, California. It's the closest thing we have in these modern times to Woodstock, and the demographics are pretty much the same. So pack your mustache wax, your most thrift store-looking muscle tee and forget the sunblock, because the palest person who gets the most sunburned wins.

This year, the "Coachella Valley Music and Arts Fest," as it's formally called, will be held April 15-17 and the line-up of performers only dropped yesterday:

Where to Find Coachella's Hottest After-Parties

April 13, 2010 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Coachella, the indie music fest out in the desert, is on from April 16 to 18, and right now the ticketed masses are flocking to set up camp in Indio. Of course the partying begins in the skies, but the one thing the Coachella throngs will be focused on aside from the music stages are the after-parties. It's hard to navigate the slew of bashes that are held in conjunction with the 11th annual festival. But we rounded up some of the best options that'll allow you to let loose and cool off in the desert.

See our top three Coachella party picks after the jump.

How You Can Actually DJ at Coachella This Year

February 3, 2010 at 10:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

We’ve already told you how to get tickets to Coachella, but what if you want to perform at this year’s fest?

If you want to DJ at Coachella this year, all you have to do is get together a dozen friends who are willing to run on a hamster wheel in the scorching heat for 30 minutes. The eco-educational nonprofit organization Global Inheritance, that combines art, fun, and play to promote environmental issues, is sponsoring the Sweat Shop, an initiative that gives DJs a chance to spin while their friends ride bikes, turn hand cranks, and run on hamster wheels to power their equipment.

If you think you (and your friends) have what it takes to spin at Coachella, email sweatshopMIXER@globalinheritance.org with your website for consideration. If you’re chosen, you’ll need to send them a $50 deposit that you will get back if your friends can manage to keep your turntables spinning for 30 minutes.

How To Get Tickets To Coachella 2010

December 21, 2009 at 1:04 PM | by | Comment (1)

Let the countdown to denim cutoffs begin. The dates for California's biggest music festival, Coachella, were recently announced, sending fest fanatics into a tailspin. We know Coachella die-hards to be as devoted to those three days in the desert as cult members, so this slice of news is quite the big deal.

April 16, 17, and 18 2010 are the days to set aside for a weekend of indie rock outside, electro in the notorious Sahara tent, and random "celeb" sightings. In 2009, we were graced with the presence of Tara Reid and Paris Hilton, for instance. Also, expect a fake version of the Coachella line-up poster to surface within weeks.

Now how to get those tickets...

Coachella '09 Proves to Be Recession-Proof

April 20, 2009 at 1:39 PM | by | Comments (0)

Were you one of the estimated 151,000 people who attended the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend? If so, were you surprised at the absence of elbow room? While final attendance numbers haven't been released yet for this weekend, organizers say this year's crowd matched if not exceeded last year's, which was scheduled prior to the global economy falling apart. Twitter user @leximaven had a simple explanation: "music fans, like me, view fests as vital to happiness."

One person who wasn't so happy: Singer Morrissey, who walked off the stage Friday because he was disgusted by the smell of barbecue wafting over the crowd, saying "I can smell burning flesh and I hope to God it's human." The former member of the Smiths, who is now a vegetarian, went on to cancel his Oakland show but was spotted in a bar at a show later that night, causing his fans to cry even more than usual.

Coachella Ready to Rock the Desert…and the Desktop

Where: 81-800 Avenue 51 [map], Indio, CA, United States, 92201
April 17, 2009 at 1:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

Don't know about where you are, but this balmy East Coast weather is getting us excited for summer music festivals. Which is fitting, because Coachella, the first mega-event of the festival season, takes off today on the other side of the country in Indio, California.

Coachella has finally posted the set times, and fans have been busy programming their iPhone apps and making some tough decisions on who to see and who to skip. Morrissey or Girl Talk? Franz Ferdinand or Bright Eyes? The Cure or Public Enemy? (OK well, maybe not much fan overlap on that one.)

For those who can't make it out to the desert, AT&T is streaming live video of the festival all weekend long, so you can catch full sets online from the likes of M.I.A., the Hold Steady, and Paul McCartney. Sweet!

Economy Not Slowing Down Coachella (But Tix Still Available)

Where: 81-800 Avenue 51 [map], Indio, CA, United States, 92201
April 14, 2009 at 9:06 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you thought the economic doldrums meant you'd have more elbow room at this weekend's pricey Coachella Music Festival, think again.

While some smaller music festivals have had to throw in the towel this year, giant events like Coachella appear to be doing just fine, thank you very much. Organizers report the 10th annual desert party is selling "almost neck and neck with last year," and is expected to draw somewhere between 135,000 and 150,000 music lovers.

At the moment, 3-day passes ($269) as well as individual tickets for each day ($99) are all still available. The Killers and The Cure headline with a special appearance by Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney's first stateside festival concert ever.

Coachella iPhone App Promises Less Running from Stage to Stage

Where: 81-800 AVENUE 51 [map], Indio, CA, United States, 92201

Spring's biggest (and priciest) music festival, Coachella is just around the corner, so all you rock-heads better be almost finished paying off that lay-away ticket plan. The three-day concert starts April 17.

As we've mentioned, $270 tickets are our least favorite thing about giant music festivals, but our second-least favorite thing is figuring out where the heck to be at all times. "Can I catch the Killers on the mainstage when M.I.A. is just finishing on stage two?" "Is it worth abandoning my sweet spot near the front?" "How do I know when sets are actually going to start?"

So we're pretty impressed with Coachella's new iPhone application, which puts all the info right in your palm—no more asking peeved security guards what time the Cure really goes on. In addition to interactive festival maps and a concert photo uploader, the app will have an updated set schedule with a 'Coachooser,' so you can put together your own lineup and hit all the important stops.
